The Weekly Webcomic Wrapup holiday spectacular

As many religions and cultures recently celebrated some form of gift-giving winter holiday, we found it prudent to turn this edition of the WeeWebWrap into an old-fashioned Holiday Spectacular. How are we doing this? Well, other than featuring mostly holiday-themed comics, we've also managed to enlist the help of A Christmas Story's Peter Billingsley to write this post for us. Okay, so he's just transcribing exactly what we tell him to write, but still -- Peter. Billingsley.

Joining in the Yule-tide festivities are EGM troublemakers Hsu & Chan, who've made the jump from ink and paper to ones and zeroes. Should they play nice with the other contenders, we anticipate them becoming weekly regulars. Make sure to vote in the poll after the jump, and let us know what should make the cut next week!

Billingsley out! (Sorry, he demanded that that be included.)

The House of Miyamoto #1 (Hsu & Chan)
Trigger Happy (VG Cats)
Tell Me What You Want (Digital Unrest)
Merry Xbox-mas (Dueling Analogs)
Last Minute Shopping (MNC)
How The King Stole Christmas Part Three (Brawl in the Family)

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup celebrates the 'duke

Oh, come on. You knew something like this was bound to happen, didn't you? What, you honestly thought my first week behind the wheel of this time-honored weekly feature wouldn't be spent usurping its intended purpose, changing its focus from the evaluation of comedic gaming-centric comics to a weekly thought-provoking seminar on the brilliance and relevance of Marmaduke?

Okay, fine -- since it's the holidays, I'll allow you one last week of the genre you've become oh-so-accustomed to. You know the drill: Pick your favorite, vote in the poll (posted after the jump), and tell us the hee-larious strips we missed out on that should be included in the next installment of the WeeWebWrap. Oh, wait; that last bit won't be necessary -- you're getting Marmaduke.

How the King Stole Christmas Part 2 (Brawl in the Family)
You Will Feel the Heat (Penny Arcade)
Theatrical Debut
(Digital Unrest)
Acquired Talents (Dueling Analogs)
Hardcore (2P START)
Stringy Theory (Sidescroller)

Pole poll: Your pick to make a Wii pole dancing 'game'

Okay, here's the deal. Remember Peekaboo Pole Dancing, the company which, back in May, confirmed its intent to make a pole dancing game for Wii? It still wants to – only according to MTV Multiplayer, it doesn't actually have anyone to make or publish the thing.

Peekaboo rep Simon Kay even went as far as to say, "Please feel free to give a shout out to any developers or publishers who want to give this a crack." So, who exactly should said shout be given out to? There's no guarantee that they'll listen – let alone actually say, "Hey, that's a great idea!" – but we'll be sure to deliver it the next time we speak to your top pick. The virtual voting booth can be found after the break.

Readers pick best webcomic: A penetrating look

Although they totally forgot about Quincy, the dyanmic duo at Penny Arcade managed to capture the spirit of PlayStation's Home quite aptly in just three strips. Thus it's with (we presume) bittersweet agreement that A Penetrating Look was voted best gaming comic this week.

Second and third place go to newcomer Town Folks by newcomer Brawl in the Family and Ball and Stick by personal favorite Digital Unrest, respectively. This is it for me and webcomic wrapup, Griffin takes over this Saturday (just to clarify: I'm not leaving Joystiq, you're still stuck with my crappy other posts). Thanks to everyone who voted, at any point in the last 3 years, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is passing the baton

Apologies for the lack of updates recently, folks, as I've been in a persistent battle with our weekend guerrilla team, who managed to whittle me down and is now taking over full control of the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup. I made a deal that would keep the McElroy Empire out of here forever ... but then they altered the deal. I can only pray they don't alter it further.

I've been given the opportunity to make a final statement, which I intend to do so with bullet points:
  • In the world of webcomics, this is more often than not true. For better and for worse.
  • Is it Funny Today? is worth checking out to see what the Internet Hivemind finds
  • The 2008 Webcomic Holiday Postcard Fundraiser is now live and worth your consideration. Proceeds go to Child's Play Charity.
  • Favorite webcomic? I love Digital Unrest and its geeky science jokes.
It's been a great 3 years, 2 months and 6 days, thanks to everyone who has been supportive of this. Griffin will take over next week, so for one last time: Here are our picks for the week's best game-related webcomics, be sure to vote for your favorite! (Poling after the break.)

Ball and Stick (Digital Unrest)
Unavoidable Square tax (MNC)
A Penetrating Look (Penny Arcade)
Town Folks (Brawl in the Family)
Of bar bets and pub puns (Sidescroller)
Is that a tear? (GameMarks)
Crossover (CAD)
Who Reviews the Reviewers? (2P Start)
Burn me once, shame ... (Dueling Analogs)

Readers pick best webcomic: Theft of the Magi

... Wow, that was close. The last time we checked on the webcomic wrapup, XKCD's Theft of the Magi and CAD's Crossover were tied with 145 votes apiece. We decided to be somewhat Vice Presidential and cast the deciding vote ... to XKCD. Cheer up, CAD, you still got second place, and your prize is just as big as first place's (read: nada).

Laughing about the race in third place is Red, the Color of Seduction (Indoor Heroes), who beat out The Truth is the New Lie (Penny Arcade) also by one vote. Thanks to everyone who voted (see? your vote counts) and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble up on this week!

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup celebrates Murray

On occasion, we try to include game-related webcomics in the wrapup that touch on sentimentality instead of humor. Those typically go over about as well as premium DLC of a video tutorial on wearing horse armor. So instead of throwing it into the poll, we just wanted to take a moment to highlight this week's Penny Arcade strip "In Memoriam." It was also recently (as of November 18) the comic's 10 year anniversary, so congratulations to Mike (Gabe) and Jerry (Tycho).

Although we're a little overstuffed compared to last time, we did take two weeks to hibernate so it's our right as a webcomic wrapup to break the new, self-imposed "seven contenders per week" rule. Just this once.

Games in Proteins (Digital Unrest)
Theft of the Magi (XKCD)
Crossover (CAD Comic)
Cooking Mama: Thanksgiving Day Massacre (MNC)
Red, the Color of Seduction (Indoor Heroes)
A Frightening Concoction (Robot Martini)*
From Dawn Till Dusk (2P Start)
The Truth is the New Lie (Penny Arcade)
Shattrath is a Ghost Town (Extra Life)
The New Flesh (Dipswitch)

* For those who don't get subtlety.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is Left 4 The Living

16 November --Dear Diary,

Manny here. Meche and I decided to go visit Stubbs in the city, ran into a few ne'er-do-wells harassing a quartet of the living. Far be it for me to get in the way of schoolyard play, but these half-living mobs -- they weren't even well dressed! -- were being big bullies. Savages these days.

I saw the four not-yet-departed heading toward a nearby theater, so I decided to leave them a shotgun and assault rifle. Hope that helps clear the crowds. I'm not in the travel business anymore, but I'm always for new neighbors in the Ninth. It raises the value of my condo.

Time to go, Stubbs is here and he's got tickets for the off-broadway performance of Nightmare Before Christmas.

How We Used to Do It (CAD Comics)
No Escape (MNC)
Limitless Adventure (Penny Arcade)
Discontent (Castle Vidcons; context)
Guilt Ridden All Over His Face (2P Start)
It Takes Two (VG Cats)
Crash Test Crummy (Sidescroller)

Readers pick best webcomic: Let's search for tre-sha!

As in, "treasure," only with a thick accent. Scott Ramsoomair always seems to have the magic touch; once again, his VG Cats strip claims the top spot of this week's webcomic wrapup. Out of all the things our Fable 2 dog has discovered in the grounds of Albion, this makes a lot more sense than, say, a shiny hat.

Second and third place go to Tough Times (Luke Surl Comics) and Fixing an Election (2P Start). Thanks to everyone who voted, as well as for all the logos (and your opinion/critiques thereof). Be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is still wearing a costume

To be perfectly honest, we don't see why Halloween can't be a week-long holiday with state-sponsored costume contests and talent shows. Then again, after two hours downtown we had a 7:8 Palin to Joker ratio, so maybe we have too much faith in the creativity of humanity (kudos to the "Most Overused Costume of 2009" Rorschach we saw).

We're asking a lot of you this time: Tell us the best and worst costumes you saw this weekend, check out these comics and vote for your favorite (polling after the break) and if you still have any logo ideas, send them in! We really appreciate what we've seen so far, and come next Saturday we'll be having a vote on the favorites.

Translation (Castle Vidcons)
Halloween on a gamer's budget (Sidescroller)
Operation Myriad (Penny Arcade)
On Edge (Dipswitch)
The Living Un-Caffeinated (Boys of Floyd)
Criminal X (Digital Unrest)
Mushroom Kingdom in Recession (Extra Life)
You're Pushing My Buttons (2P Start)
LittleBigObscenity (CAD Silly)
Sackboy's First Day (ONAM)

Readers pick best webcomic: Avoiding Controversy

Although we prefer the alternative over the "official" comic, 2P Start's Avoiding Controversy was, by a narrow margin, crowned champion in this week's webcomic wrapup. Second and third place go to A Broken Clock (Penny Arcade) and Every Single Day (Cross Platform), respectively.

A big thanks to those who have already sent in logos, but we're still hoping for a few more selections, preferably ones less flashy and more akin to the Joystiq aesthetic. Yes, we're bossy about these sort of things, but we'll be sure to show you the cream of the crop in the next week or so.

As always, thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week! (Protip: It's best to use the comments field for that kind of stuff, or if you go via our tip line be sure to include "webcomic" in the subject.)

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup needs a logo

We were going to make this week's theme related to the recent LittleBigControversy, but in trying to create a video we realized that we lack a good logo or any sense of branding for this feature (all part of being in beta, we suppose). We're hoping there's at least one or two readers out there adept at vector art, color theory and/or typography so let's see what you can do. Please, internet, design the Weekly Webcomic Wrapup a logo. (Image Source)

Here are our picks for the week's best game-related webcomic. Polling after the break; be sure to vote for your favorite!

Avoiding Controversy (Alt.) (2P Start)
A Broken Clock (Penny Arcade)
It Has Happened (Digital Unrest)
Both Ways (CAD Mini)
Every Single Day (Cross Platform)
Little Big Terrorist (Game Marks)
Lies (Angry Stick)
All Will Perish (Castle Vidcons)
First you must ... (Indoor Heroes)
Light in a Dark World (Extra Life)

Readers pick best webcomic: Little Big Zone

The verdict is still out on the accuracy of the comic, but 2P Start's Little Big Zone won the popular vote for the week's best webcomic. Sega, the spiky blue ball is in your court to prove us wrong.

Second and third place goes to Penny Arcade's The Deluge and Dueling Analog's Pixel Twist. Thanks to everyone who voted, and be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week! (Protip: It's best to use the comments field for that kind of stuff, or if you go via our tip line be sure to include "webcomic" in the subject.)
