As PAL waits, potential customers fire back

Well, it certainly didn't take long for the Sony backlash in PAL-land to hit its stride. There is already a site up called, "This is Waiting," which plays on the PlayStation 3's European slogan, "This is Living." There's a great collection of photoshops and video remixes which perfectly reflect the anger many in the region feel toward Sony.

We'll highlight our favorites in case you're too lazy to check out all the content that is constantly being updated on the site.

Aww, Robert, the map with the countries X’d out in red was a funnier image than the globe. It really put things into perspective when referring to a "worldwide launch." Consider swapping them.

Based on recent news, it's up to the pro-Sony crowd to break this in, although I'm sure Nintendo and Microsoft supporters will get their turn soon enough. After all, Joystiq is biased against everyone!

Oh man, even though my with tinfoil hat, I think Joystiq is slightly bias against Sony for monetary purposes. I put my best Yoda impression which leads to my theory: Flamebaits (e.g., "Is this worth $600?") leads to a lot of comments. Many comments leads to increase traffic. Increase traffic leads to high potential to get ad clicks from unique visitors.

However, I'm sort of a hypocrite. This is a good blog post and funny website. Just hiliarous photoshopped commentary images.

Holy sweet mother of god that "Failure to Launch" one is HILARIOUS!

I know it's different because Sony had announced a worldwide release this year, but the XBOX 360 didn't launch in Australiasia until March the following year either - nearly six months after the US launch.

So, while disappointing, the split schedule is exactly how the Xbox 360 did it.

Nintendo could sweep up the leftovers from the 360 if they release before Xmas over here, they have shown that europe is important too (we got DS lite blacks first i think).

And @11, they may not have launched is australia, but the whole PAL territory is much bigger, they got a lot out in europe before then.

This is a rather valid point. If I remember correctly, when XBox 360 launched, there was about a 30% failure rate (red lights of death) for the system and as I can tell from blogs such as these the problems still continue. As I recall, the PS2 had a similar situation where systems would fail and could not read discs etc. Many of my friend had to send in their PS2s (many were sent a new or refurbished one) or just buy a new one.
What will the failure rate be like for the PS3? And how many people will tolerate such an occurance. I would rather wait for the kinks to be worked out.
Good luck to the Beta testers! $600 dollars is a large gamble.

PS. Nintendo on the other hand......... Well all my systems still work inclduing my NES from 1986. Now that's money well spent.

i think the "this is lying" one is a bit harsh. i don't think anybody expected laser diode yeilds to be so bad. and read http://www.hdbeat.com , sony even pulled selling the lasers to other BD group partners to try to make sure there's enough for the ps3 launch. it's not just the ps3 thats getting hurt here, but everydoby who's trying to make BD players as well.

Imagine. Argentina. Dollar equals 3.04 of your country currency. So, one ps2 game is 50U$S, multiplied by 3.04 Pesos it's *shock* 152 pesos. The minimum of an average worker is 700 pesos. Edibles for the month only!- 900pesos. (Average family).
Now, someone imports a PS3, with some games 800U$S*3.04=2432 pesos.

Guys, ThisIsWaiting is owned by Wii60, I was a former moderator there. Horrible site, all they do is make these immature photoshops and bash sony and have NOTHING to back themselves up with, hell, I dont support sony and I think the PS3 is garbage but they are just unbelievable over there, 90% of the members are under 14 years old, most of them are nintendo fanboys too, god I cant stand that site...I was a mod there for 3 months till i finally just gave up, I know what goes on there.

Number 26, it is lying though. They put BlueRay in the system, the knew the production times and problems with the diods, the thing is, if they didn't then they should have kept their mouths shut. People bitch about how Nintendo doesn't release all this informations, but guess what. If Nintendo can't launch until November 22nd, then they still never lied. If they have to price it at 249, then they never lied. Honestly, I believe that the Wii hasn't been announced yet price or date because Nintendo does not want to run into these problems.

Also, it is bad enough that Sony lied about their numbers, but lying about a console release date is just wrong!!!!! (especially since it was already lied about once, when they told us a 2005 holiday release over and over again until the 2005 holiday came about! and then told us spring 2006. This presents a problem. Sony told me that people will want the PS3 so badly, they will work second jobs and that sort of thing. With only 400k available to North America at launch, I forsee thousands of Europeans making the trip across the pond to buy them up. Right? Because Sony told me everyone will want the PS3? It'll be like a reverse World War 2! Sony Logic, FTW!

In fact, Europe isn’t entirely PAL, as France uses SECAM (as well as most of the former Soviet bloc states). PAL is used in most parts of Africa, some parts of Asia and South America and in Australia.

The map with the red x's and green checks implies that the PS3 isn't launching in Canada. Is this true? If so, they just screwed themselves bigtime. I read somewhere that Canada has a very high adoption rate for xbox/xbox360, so ignoring us at launch will just make it worse if not nearly impossible here for Sony to come out on top in the future. Much worse.
