Petition: Tell Reggie to lose some weight
42
The most surprising thing about Nintendo's E3 2007 press conference wasn't the Wii Zapper or the upcoming release dates or even the official announcement of Wii Fit. No, the most surprising moment of the show was when Nintendo of America President and CEO Reggie Fils-Aime's Mii ballooned to an "overweight" body-mass index of 27.51 in front of a crowd of thousands. While the ass-kicker and name-taker claimed that the extra weight came from muscle and not fat, we agree with Shigeru Miyamoto, who said that was simply a "nice excuse."
The folks over at WiiHealthy aren't too happy with the public face for their weight-management system of choice. They've started a petition to convince the Regginator that "he has to lose some weight by playing healthy games on the Nintendo Wii!" Sure, there are probably more important issues to sign your name to (like a PS3 price drop, for instance) but we can definitely get behind the idea of continued good health for our favorite Nintendo revolutionary.

If Reggie says it's muscle, it's muscle! What, do you want to fight about it?

Reggie: Nintendo will now be focused on providing a hardcore FPS experience. Just ignore those casual games we talked about.

Thanks for posting the story :) The more signatures, the better!
It's not just about his weight, the most important thing is actually that we show Reggie that we appreciate his work at Nintendo of America.

The BMI is a load of rubbish. According to it's figures, Brad Pitt is overweight and George Clooney is obese.

Yeah, but they're the exception to the rule. BMI applies to just about anybody who isn't a body builder or muscle toner.

Of course There's a petition. Reggie has to take your name somehow. This might aswell be a suicide note.

People are naive
This will be a marketing coup. In one year, Reggie will take this test again, either as a private Nintendo press release or in their next E3. Reggie will do this again, be rated as "normal" then claim that WiiFit gave him his new body.
Bet on it

BMI is usless on an individual level. But, it is very useful for population based estimates of obesity since the wide variations in fat/muscle among different people somewhat cancel out when you lump everyone together.
Anyways, a BMI of 27ish isnt that bad... 18-25 is the norm depending on what scale you use.

I wish that real Reggie would wear a bright purple shirt with white pants. That would be a priceless snapshot.

Then Reggie can say "I'm not only the president, I'm also a client!"

I just thought of the possible next bundle instead of a price drop. Pack in Wii Sports, the balance board, and Wii Fit.

Meh, that's nothing, mine's somewhere around 37-40. (Yes, it's time for me to lose weight ;) )

I think Reggie's BMI is higher. I don't think he is 6'5" I think he is around 6'2".

Reggie is that tall. I am 6'3" and he towered over me when I met him. What I want to know is how much light vs. heavy clothing affected the BMI. I thought it was funny when they chose the light clothes, they knew it would make his BMI higher.

A BMI of 27 isn't really 'overweight' in the sense that he's fat.
My BMI is 27, and I"m far from overweight.

27.5 would be overweight if he wasn't like 7-foot tall...

lol. judging health purely by weight. i know so many skinny obese people its not even funny. for every inch taller you are than average, you are only supposed to gain 4 pounds? so as you grow taller, you only stretch, your bone structure doesn't change? grow?

This is such a canned PR move. Just you guys watch, at someother press event, Reggie is going to get on another Wii Fit and is going to have a lower BMI and show the world how Wii Fit really works.
Posted: Jul 12th 2007 6:45PM (Unverified) said
eh, I can swallow that its muscle throwing it off. I run an hour straight 3 days a week and lift weights, and my BMI is 27. I have skinny friends who can hardly jog.

They should have booked Chewbacca to do the Wii fitness demonstration on stage to the Star Wars anthem.
Everyone would have loved it then as everyone loves Star Wars!

Yes, BMI is not a calculation of body fat *per se*, but simply a relation between a person's weight divided by the square of their height (kg/m^2). A person who is a bodybuilder will be just as overweight according to BMI as someone who eats a lot and does not exercise at all.
If someone wants to maintain a normal BMI, they have to take into account their current body fat and muscular mass to determine if they should exercise more/less and eat more/less.
So just because someone has a "high" BMI doesn't mean they have a lot of body fat.

Well, to Reggie's defense, they did pick "light" clothing when he had a full suit on...

Don't diss Reggie; he's all out of bubblegum.

Miyamoto is the only man who can make fun of Reggie's fat and survive.

I can see it now.
John Basedow is going to invade the Wii with his new line of fitness games.
It would fit him well really since his freaking head isn't correctly proportioned to his body and looks like a damn Mii anyway.
Or whatever the user created people are called.

Whats the problem with a BMI of 27.5? Reggie might look a little fat but even somebody like Dwayne 'The Rock'Johnson has a BMi of around 30, and that guy is about the hardest looking person I have ever seen in my life:

Heck I have a BMI in excess of 24 (near the accepted norm and I'm a skinny little ****. The measurement only really applies to 'normal' people who have never really lifted any weights in their entire life. Reggie might look like Donkey Kong but he is hardly overweight. Plus he'll kick your ass.
Anyway that Wii Fit thing looks good.
