We spoke with Bungie's Chris Butcher, engineering lead for online shooter <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/destiny">Destiny</a></em>, about the overall concept of the game and its mishmash of genres. <em>Destiny</em> is primarily a shooter, as shown in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/10/destiny-gets-its-first-gameplay-trailer/">gameplay footage released at the show</a>, but we also discuss some of its other flavors and social components.<br />
<br />
Butcher, being the engineering guy, also gets some time to geek out about the game's lighting and animation. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/destiny-e3-2013/">Destiny (E3 2013)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/destiny-e3-2013/#5957177"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/06/destiny01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/destiny-e3-2013/#5957178"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/06/destiny02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/destiny-e3-2013/#5957179"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/06/destiny03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/destiny-e3-2013/#5957180"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/06/destiny04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/destiny-e3-2013/#5957181"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/06/destiny05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/18/destinys-online-battlegrounds-explained-by-bungie/">Destiny's online battlegrounds explained by Bungie</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 18 Jun 2013 19:30:00 EST. <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/shadowrun-returns"><em>Shadowrun Returns</em></a> is scheduled to release for PC and tablets on July 25, a slight delay from developer Harebrained Schemes' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/10/shadowrun-returns-confirmed-for-june-pre-order-arrivals-outline/">original release window</a>, which in itself was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/11/25/shadowrun-returns-pushed-back-to-may-june-2013/">already a delay</a>. Harebrained has also gone ahead and noted some <a href="http://harebrained-schemes.com/post/its-happening/">highlights</a> on its site from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/30/shadowrun-returns-concludes-kickstarter-at-1-8-million-in-contr/">backers</a> using the game's editing tools, which will ship with the game.<br />

Ampltude Studios' <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/endless-space"><em>Endless Space</em></a> will launch its first premium expansion, <em>Disharmony</em>, on June 26 through Steam. Publisher Iceberg Interactive will also have an English retail version - key-only box with 16 page artbook - two days later. The expansion is priced at 10 in both $ and &euro; Earth currency forms.<br />
<br />
The <em>Disharmony</em> expansion will add a new faction ("The Harmony") to the 4X strategy game, as well as new ship types, targeting and redesigned weapon systems, better AI, along with an "enhanced invasion mechanics."<br />
<br />
<em>Endless Space </em>has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/11/endless-space-sells-300k-copies-adds-fourth-free-update/">sold over 300,000 copies</a> and the developer has been quite generous with free add-ons, having done four since last year's July launch.<br />

<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/alan-wakes-american-nightmare">Alan Wake's American Nightmare</a></em>, the standalone follow-up to the original psychological action thriller, is now 800 Microsoft Points ($10) on the <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Alan-Wakes-American-Nightmare/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d80258411233">Xbox Live Marketplace</a>. <br />

<em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/state-of-decay">State of Decay</a></em> has sold over half a million copies since launching on Xbox Live Arcade on June 5. This makes the Undead Labs developed game the fastest selling original title ever on Xbox Live Arcade, according to <a href="http://news.xbox.com/2013/06/games-state-of-decay-fastest-selling">Microsoft</a>.<br />
<br />
But everything isn't headshots and restful nights with <em>State of Decay</em>, as the game's first title update did experience some hiccups. <a href="http://www.xblafans.com/state-of-decays-title-update-in-a-state-of-emergency-67960.html">XBLA Fans</a> reports the patch on Friday night didn't do everything as intended. Undead Labs' founder Jeff Strain went to the company <a href="http://forums.undeadlabs.com/showthread.php?23684-Ripping-Off-the-Bandaid-Title-Update-1-Not-Working" target="_blank">forums</a> and said, "Reports started coming in that other bugs we had verified internally as fixed were apparently not fixed on the live version of the game." No word yet when that patch will be patched.<br />
<br />
The game is<span> currently in development for a PC release on Steam. Strain says Undead Labs "just need to integrate with the Steam platform and add native support for keyboard and mouse control.</span>"<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/state-of-decay-sells-over-half-a-million-copies-update-being-re/">State of Decay sells over half a million copies, update being re-patched</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 15:30:00 EST. <br />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/26/antichamber-exponentially-recouped-dev-costs/">Indie hit</a> <em>Antichamber</em> is already a mind-bending monster, but now add some <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/oculus-rift">Oculus Rift</a> and you've got a "trapped on the holodeck" episode of <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation</em>. That's what computer science student <a href="https://twitter.com/Vaecon">Vaecon</a> has done in this VR conversion of the game.<br />
<br />
"It's interesting seeing that someone has gone ahead and done this, and I guess I really need to go and get it up and supported officially," said <a href="http://joystiq.com/game/antichamber"><em>Antichamber</em></a> developer Alexander Bruce when we pointed out the video to him.<br />
<br />
"I have an Oculus dev kit at home, but haven't yet run the game on it myself. I tried watching that video using the good old cross-eyed method, but it was pretty much the same as seeing the game normally. At least <em>Antichamber</em> looks like a more cerebral and calm Oculus experience than some of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/in-the-eve-vr-cockpit-ccps-space-dogfighting-demo-for-oculus-r/">whiplash inducing games</a> we've seen use the tech.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/antichamber-trips-the-oculus-rift/">Antichamber trips the Oculus Rift</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 09:00:00 EST. <em><a href="http://joystiq.com/game/the-last-of-us">The Last of Us</a></em> represented several accomplishments during its first week of sale in the UK, where it took the number one spot on the region's sales chart. According to <a href="http://www.chart-track.co.uk/?i=1632&amp;s=1111">Chart Track</a>, the game is the first Sony exclusive to take the top spot since <em>Uncharted: Golden Abyss</em> on Vita in early 2012. It's also the third fastest selling game of 2013 behind <em>Bioshock Infinite </em>and the "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/26/square-enix-weak-sales-tomb-raider-hitman-absolution/">weak</a>" <em>Tomb Raider</em>, along with being the biggest launch for a new intellectual property since <em>L.A Noire</em> in 2011. Overall, a fine start to developer Naughty Dog's swan song for PlayStation 3.<br />
<br />
The cash infusions for the UK retail market didn't end with <em>The Last of Us</em>, as Nintendo's <em>Animal Crossing: New Leaf</em> debuted in second and became (wow, y'all love your Tom Nook debt programs) the biggest non-Mario 3DS launch ever. The UK top ten indentured to Tom Nook can be found after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/the-last-of-us-is-the-first-in-uk/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>The Last of Us is the first in UK</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/17/the-last-of-us-is-the-first-in-uk/">The Last of Us is the first in UK</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 17 Jun 2013 07:00:00 EST. Sony was undoubtedly the belle of the ball at this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/event/e3-2013">E3</a>. The PlayStation 4 manufacturer <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/10/ps4-launches-399/">captured the conversation</a> after its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/10/playstation-e3-2013-liveblog-on-joystiq/">press conference</a> and could have easily concluded it with President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America Jack Tretton dropping a mic on stage.<br />
<br />
The hoots and hollers you heard during the live stream were genuine - instead of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cZ67R5tRfU">seat fillers you usually hear during press conferences</a>. It's going to be interesting to see what happens this fall when consumers make their next-gen console decision between PlayStation 4 and... what was the name of the other one again?<br />

Nintendo's Wii U is struggling in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/24/wii-u-shipments-miss-targets-at-3-45m-fy14-forecasts-of-9m/">sales</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/fifa-14-not-coming-to-wii-u-due-to-poor-fifa-13-sales/">support</a>. During an interview this week at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/event/e3-2013">E3</a> with Charlie Scibetta, Nintendo of America's head of corporate communications, we noted that the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/02/no-madden-nfl-football-from-ea-sports-on-wii-u-in-2013/">Wii U's lack of Madden this year</a> puts it in the company of Sega's ill-fated Dreamcast. EA currently has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/17/ea-has-no-wii-u-games-in-development/">no games in development for Wii U</a>.<br />
<br />
"You'd have to ask EA about their future development plans. EA is a great partner of ours, they've had games on our platforms before. They want what all third parties want and what we want: for the install base to grow," said <span class="st">Scibetta</span>. "We're confident that once some of these games come out that we have planned between now and the holiday and into 2014, that it will help drive the install base and when that happens the platforms will look more enticing to third parties."<br />
<br />
So, we asked Electronic Arts Labels President Frank Gibeau about what Nintendo can do to bring EA back to the Wii U.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/ea-wii-us-lack-of-madden-fifa-a-rational-business-decision/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EA: Wii U's lack of Madden, FIFA a 'rational' business decision</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/ea-wii-us-lack-of-madden-fifa-a-rational-business-decision/">EA: Wii U's lack of Madden, FIFA a 'rational' business decision</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 17:00:00 EST. Harmonix's <em>Fantasia: Music Evolved</em> will include "Night on Bald Mountain," one of the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nrC8rLcvTQ">most iconic segments</a> from Disney's 1940 classic <em>Fantasia</em>.<br />
<br />
"It's one of the first songs we're announcing from the heritage of the Disney <em>Fantasia</em> film, bringing some of that music into the track list that runs the gamut from the original classical music from 1940 to contemporary pop today," said John Drake, head of communications at Harmonix. "Music is a living, breathing thing and we want to respect the entire canon of music, that's what <em>Fantasia</em> is all about."<br />
<br />
It's not entirely clear how "Night on Bald Mountain" will be used in the game, whether it'll be a standalone track or used as a part of hub world. Harmonix is going for a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/04/harmonix-and-disney-delve-into-fantasia-music-evolved-for-kin/">different type of music game experience</a> with <em>Fantasia</em> and Drake tells us the reactions have been all across the spectrum, saying some folks during the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/event/e3-2013">E3</a> presentation actually cried.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/fantasia-music-evolved-ties-back-to-legacy-with-night-on-bald/">Fantasia: Music Evolved ties back to legacy with 'Night on Bald Mountain'</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 15:30:00 EST. Nordic Games spent $4.9 million to <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/22/thq-auction-darksiders-red-faction-homeworld/">acquire THQ's back catalog in April</a>, but has yet to reveal any concrete plans for the intellectual properties, although it certainly knows what you'd like to see. And, with any luck, will announce some plans by Gamescom.<br />
<br />
"We want to carefully select which franchises are up for getting a sequel or new installment. We closely monitor the communities on that," said Reinhard Pollice, who handles Nordic's business and product development. He mentioned the games receiving the most feedback are <em>Darksiders</em>, <em>MX vs. ATV</em>, <em>Red Faction</em> and <em>Titan Quest</em>.<br />
<br />
Personally, Pollice would also like a new <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/deadly-creatures">Deadly Creatures</a></em>, but there are other challenges. Nordic has described itself as a "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/23/nordic-games-involved-with-thq-since-january-is-talking-sequels/">middle man</a>," since the company doesn't have internal studios or the capital to make the AAA sequels that fans of these games would expect. This is particularly true in the case of Darksiders, which Nordic would need to seek another publishing partner to help out.<br />
<br />
"Darksiders is really big. We know we need a partner for that. An established development team that can pull out such a big action adventure. We obviously talked to former team members and, if they are free, we want to somehow involve them. If they are allowed to because, you know, some of them found other jobs or <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/01/28/crytek-usa-to-be-headed-by-former-vigil-boss/">are with Crytek now</a>," said Pollice.<br />
<br />
He expressed that Darksiders is the franchise Nordic wants to do right by, to continue the story that's already been established. As a fan, Pollice doesn't want to mess up Darksiders and he wants to make sure that nobody else ruins what's been started in the first two games. Although, with the road ahead, he said, "I would not look for a <em>Darksiders 3</em> before two years from now."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/nordic-games-thq-E3-darksiders/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nordic Games explains who the f they are, plans for THQ assets</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/14/nordic-games-thq-E3-darksiders/">Nordic Games explains who the f they are, plans for THQ assets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 14 Jun 2013 09:45:00 EST. The Electronic Entertainment Expo (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2013">E3</a>) broke the eardrums of 48,200 attendees this year, a 2,500 increase from the prior year. The Entertainment Software Association (ESA), the trade group that organizes the annual Los Angeles meet-up, estimates the show brought the city $40 million in revenue.<br />
<br />
E3 2014 is scheduled for June 10-12, 2014, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Stay with us for more E3 coverage as we keep shaking out the stories. There's still more. Like, <em>way more</em>. We had the opportunity to chat with <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty-ghosts"><em>Call of Duty: Ghosts</em></a> Executive Producer Mark Rubin during <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/event/e3-2013">E3</a>, but instead of asking how many guns the latest installment has, we decided to focus on tech and art.<br />
<br />
Rubin explains how the next-gen console architectures being so close to PCs will likely help all developers, from the mega studios, like Infinity Ward, to basement developers like Sally Perkins (you'll hear about her in five years). He also goes on to explain how Infinity Ward has reworked its art flow to benefit all platforms.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-ghosts-e3-2013/">Call of Duty: Ghosts (E3 2013)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-ghosts-e3-2013/#5946848"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/06/cod-ghostsfederation-day-rappel_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-ghosts-e3-2013/#5946849"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/06/cod-ghostsgood-boy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-ghosts-e3-2013/#5946850"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/06/cod-ghostsserver-room-takedown_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/call-of-duty-ghosts-e3-2013/#5946851"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2013/06/cod-ghostsunderwater-ambush_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/13/call-of-duty-ghosts-built-with-cinema-quality-art-assets/">Call of Duty: Ghosts built with 'cinema quality' art assets</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Jun 2013 19:30:00 EST. <div>Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, says the company isn't changing its sales projections on the Skylanders franchise, or this fall's <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/skylanders-swap-force/">Skylanders: Swap Force</a></em>, in the face of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/disney-infinity">Disney Infinity</a></em>.<br />
<br />
"We're still bullish on our projections. We feel like it was only a matter of time, given the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/07/activision-blizzard-sees-best-performance-in-history-during-20/">scale of the success of Skylanders</a>, that other competitors entered the genre. That's to be expected," said Hirshberg.<br />
<br />
"I get this question a lot on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty-ghosts">Call of Duty</a>. We have tough competition every year. We have tough competition in every category we play in, it's a part of the business. We try not to focus on it. We try to focus on making the best games we can and exceeding the expectations of our fans and bottling magic."<br />
<br />

"It's dead, it's dead, it's deep-sixed, it's at the bottom of the Mariana Trench," Electronic Arts' President of EA Labels Frank Gibeau stated plainly yesterday about the company's Online Pass program to Joystiq.<br />
<br />
Following EA's announcement in late May that it was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/30/ea-eliminating-online-pass-on-existing-games/">eliminating the Online Pass program</a>, gamers braced for "the twist." That occurred last week when Microsoft finally announced the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/always-on/">digital rights management (DRM) scheme for the Xbox One</a>, which would have made an Online Pass program unnecessary. However, with Sony's announcement the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/12/boyes-on-ps4-used-games-video-were-having-fun/">PlayStation 4 will follow the current model</a> of game console DRM and used games, it was a question if Online Pass was back on the table at EA.<br />
<br />
"We're not crafting a strategy to bring [Online Pass] back, you will not input codes to unlock your game, it's not going to happen," said Gibeau. The executive then moved on to tell us the company's decision to kill Online Pass and Microsoft's Xbox One DRM plans weren't linked at all, therefore PlayStation 4's recent reveal wouldn't have changed their decision on the program anyway. He called the Online Pass program "flat out dumb."<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/13/ea-online-pass-staying-dead/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>EA: Online Pass staying dead after PS4 reveal, program's expiration not tied to Xbox One</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/13/ea-online-pass-staying-dead/">EA: Online Pass staying dead after PS4 reveal, program's expiration not tied to Xbox One</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 13 Jun 2013 09:45:00 EST. The Xbox ecosystem's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/10/microsoft-points-are-out-on-xbox-one/">conversion to local currency</a> will be "equal or greater" than the existing Microsoft Point value currently banked on accounts.<br />
<br />
"When the transition takes place, the balance of Microsoft Points in an account will be retired and the customer will be given an amount in local currency that is equal or greater in Marketplace value," a Microsoft spokesperson informed Joystiq. "That value will be stored in your account and can be used similar to Microsoft Points to make purchases in the Xbox Live Marketplace."<br />
<br />
What that means in North America is that it will be 80 points (or less) to the dollar when the point exchange occurs. There is currently no official date for the conversion.<br />

If you enjoyed the song from the <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/assassins-creed-4">Assassin's Creed 4</a></em> "Horizon" trailer, it's called "Full Circle" by Half Moon Run. We've grabbed iTunes, Spotify and YouTube links if you'd like to pick it up through non piratical means.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/12/assassins-crred-4-full-circle-half-moon-run/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Looking for that song from the Assassin's Creed 4 'Horizon' trailer?</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/12/assassins-crred-4-full-circle-half-moon-run/">Looking for that song from the Assassin's Creed 4 'Horizon' trailer?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Jun 2013 11:00:00 EST. Konami has submitted a trademark application for <em>Contra Run and Gun</em>. Noticed by NeoGAF user <a href="http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=580585">R&ouml;sti</a>, the <a href="http://tsdr.uspto.gov/documentviewer?caseId=sn85950607&amp;docId=APP20130607072127#docIndex=0&amp;page=1">USPTO</a> application points to some new Contra game, but we've yet to hear anything out of Konami at this year's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/event/e3-2013">E3</a> about a new installment in the run and gun franchise.<br />
<br />
A new Contra was <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/02/konami-pre-e3-presentation-teases-new-contra-with-a-fiery-c/">teased back at E3 in 2011</a>, then again last year with the potential of <em>Castlevania: Lords of Shadow</em> studio <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/06/28/mercurysteam-wants-to-leave-castlevania-to-take-on-contra-next/">MercurySteam attached to the project</a>. However, there's nothing indicating that this recent trademark - which could be a mobile <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/canabalt"><em>Canabalt</em></a>-type game for all we know - is the same as the previously teased project.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/12/contra-run-and-gun-trademarked-in-us/">'Contra Run and Gun' trademarked in US</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 12 Jun 2013 10:30:00 EST. <br />
Get the behind-closed-doors <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/event/e3-2013">E3</a> experience with these gameplay videos for <em>Call of Duty: Ghosts</em>. We say that, because if you go to check out the game at the show, these videos are what you're going to see. And you get to do it without the cacophony of show floor noise and with the luxury of doing it in your pajamas to boot. Lucky!<br />
<br />
Above is the underwater gameplay of "Into the Deep." If you've got any drowning issues, it's probably best to skip that one. After the break we've got next-gen dog attack technology in "No Man's Land," along with the 28-minute <em>Call of Duty: Ghosts</em> presentation from Sunday night.<br />
<br />
The only video exclusive to E3 at this time is "Federation Day," which finds a squad of soldiers infiltrating a building by rappelling down it and then attempting to escape as the skyscraper collapses, but that should be available sometime after the mega convention concludes.<br />

<em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/saints-row-4">Saints Row 4</a></em> is being shown at <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/event/e3-2013">E3</a> and if there's anything those rascally Saints know how to do it's self promotion. It's a mere formality at this point, but Bethesda Softworks has officially confirmed <em>Wolfenstein: The New Order</em> and <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-evil-within">The Evil Within</a></em> for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The games were previously announced for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC as well.<br />
<br />
Bethesda also released some more screenshots for both games, which we've placed in the galleries below.<br />

Nintendo's booth showcases the company's friendly atmosphere, featuring whimsical statues and vehicles for photo opportunities. Princess Peach playing cuddly cat woman is adorable, but so are the super-sized Pikmin.<br />

Enjoy watching some sushi get eaten off a naked lady, some dude getting shot in the kneecap (ouch!) and a city block get hacked in this <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/watch-dogs"><em>Watch Dogs</em></a> trailer. <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fable-3">Fable 3</a></em>, the game in the series we all tried to forget until something worse came along in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fable-heroes">Fable Heroes</a></em>, is currently free on the Xbox Marketplace. It's still unclear if this is a bug, since the way you obtain it gratis is a little convoluted, or if this is some portent to today's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/10/xbox-e3-2013-liveblog-on-joystiq/">Microsoft press conference</a>.<br />
<br />
Here's how to get the game for free (which we've tested): You must be an Xbox Gold member. Head on over to the <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Fable-III/66acd000-77fe-1000-9115-d8024d5308d6?noSplash=1">game's page and click purchase</a>. Yes, it says that it's $20 (or whatever it is in your regional currency). Now comes the important part. Make sure you are paying with Microsoft Points, <em>not with your credit card</em>. You should see a final confirmation screen identical to the image above listing the game for free.<br />
<br />
Enjoy! As much as anybody can enjoy <em>Fable 3</em>.<br />
<br />

Michael Gallagher, president of the Entertainment Software Association (<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/esa">ESA</a>), the trade body that assembles the annual <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2013">E3</a> event, said this evening that sales tracking service <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/npd">NPD</a> was doing a "disservice to the truth" in its monthly reporting.<br />
<br />
"The digital side of the industry is not being adequately reported, understood or covered. I think we've seen the consequences of that over the last two years," said Gallagher, concerned that NPD's monthly retail assessments <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/15/ea-calls-npds-monthly-report-a-misrepresentation-of-the-entire/">don't give a full or accurate picture</a> of the industry. He noted the retail side of the industry has flattened, particularly at the end of this current console cycle, while digital distribution has grown. NPD's standard of consistent monthly retail reporting, which it has provided <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/12/npd-changes-monthly-reporting-removes-hardware-and-software-uni/">less and less detailed public data on over the years</a>, coupled with quarterly supplementals on digital distribution, isn't giving an accurate picture of the industry's current health.<br />
<br />
"Here's the aspiration: there are other industries that do this well and they enjoy the upside and downside of truthful numbers," said Gallagher. "I think the industry is better off if there's a standardized reporting mechanism that is seen as whole, and complete and truthful."<br />
<br />
The complication in Gallagher's wish is the closed digital distribution platforms of Valve's Steam, along with the PlayStation, Wii and Xbox marketplaces. To get an accurate picture of digital distribution revenue in this industry, it would require all these platform holders to openly share their sales data. And, perhaps, that's a dream for another console generation.

The <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/plants-vs-zombies-garden-warfare">second great leak</a> of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/e3-2013">E3 2013</a> and it's a megat... minorto... okay, so we all figured it was probably going to happen. <em>Just Dance 2014</em>, which will apparently now see the franchise numbered by year, has been revealed on the Xbox Marketplace.<br />
<br />
"This new opus will be even more social as you will be able to connect and dance with players from all over the world and share a unique dancing experience with them," reads the marketplace description. The only song we can pretty clearly guess is included in the game is the theme to the movie <em>Ghostbusters</em> (pictured).<br />

It's going to be a full day, so drink your Ovaltine. Don't be surprised if the decoder message is that you'll never rent a game again.

<br />
Best Buy is the next big retailer sending back its Wii U Basic units to Nintendo. <a href="http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/34487">Nintendo World Report</a> has an image pulled from Best Buy's internal system stating "stores should pull all new in box [Wii U Basic] units and send them back" starting tomorrow. It also notes that stores should see more Wii U Deluxe units arrive in the coming weeks.<br />
<br />
GameStop is also currently going through a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/05/rumor-gamestop-discontinuing-wii-u-basic-after-june-18/">similar send-back</a> of the Wii U Basic.<br />
<br />
Nintendo previously stated any notion of a recall of the Wii U Basic is a "misperception" and that the company is "working with its retail partners to simply rebalance the stock of the White 8GB and the Black 32GB Wii U models in the market." The House of Mario claims consumers will be able to continue purchasing both models. The Wii U has <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/04/24/wii-u-shipments-miss-targets-at-3-45m-fy14-forecasts-of-9m/">struggled since launch</a>, with the regular Wii outperforming its progeny.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/09/report-best-buy-also-returning-wii-u-basic/">Report: Best Buy also returning Wii U Basic</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Jun 2013 10:30:00 EST. <i>Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare</i> has been revealed, following photos taken by <a href="http://www.gamekyo.com/Webmasters/Images/195720130609_013438_8_big.jpg">Gamekyo</a> in the Los Angeles Convention Center lobby over this pre-E3 weekend.<br />
<br />
<em>PvZ: Garden Warfare</em> hasn't previously pollinated the internet with any information of its existence, but sources tell <a href="http://kotaku.com/plants-vs-zombies-garden-warfare-outed-is-likely-a-s-512148200">Kotaku</a> that the game is a multiplayer first-person shooter. We'll just let that thought settle in your mind for a bit.<br />
<br />
EA's press conference will be held tomorrow, June 10, and the game is sure to get its time in the sun then.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/09/plants-vs-zombies-garden-warfare-pops-up-in-e3-lobby/">Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare pops up in E3 lobby</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 09 Jun 2013 08:30:00 EST. Okay, so this has been a <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/06/how-game-licensing-works-on-the-xbox-one/">Debbie</a> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2013/06/06/xbox-one-requires-online-connection-every-24-hours-at-least/">downer</a> week on the Xbox One front. And let's not act like the PlayStation 4 is clear, since we simply don't know what its plans are just yet. Anyway, here we go: optimism, optimism, optimism! Let's hope consoles come out in one piece after E3.<br />

<em>Daylight</em> is a new first-person psychological horror game premiering on PC, and as a PlayStation 4 console exclusive, in the first quarter of 2014. The game runs on Unreal Engine 4 and was written by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/jessica-chobot">Jessica Chobot</a>, who also provides the protagonist's voice.<br />
<br />
Using the PlayStation Eye camera, <em>Daylight</em> will take a picture of the "exact moment that a scare happens." You can then keep the pictures as a novelty, share them on social networks, or just pass them directly to the NSA.<br />
