While the DSi's April release hasn't been confirmed, we know that timeframe is at least likely, and that means the time is approaching for you to make a decision. Are you going to buy one right away? Will you wait? Or, since we know a few of you are out there, did you buy one already, thus making this a moot question?

If you're on the side of waiting, we've got more questions for you. Are you waiting to save money, or because you're not yet sold on the system? And an even more interesting question, perhaps: which model do you have now? The original or the Lite?
DS Daily: Will you wait? originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST. Is it even an issue for you? Some people make their decisions based on other factors, and for them, whether or not a game is particularly realistic or more "cartoonish" isn't an issue. For others, however, it can be a big deal. Where do you stand?
Wii Warm Up: Realism originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 23 Jan 2009 08:00:00 EST. With their games Moon and Dementium, they've attempted to bring a big-console feel to the dual screens, and the two represent a genre outside of the handheld's typical comfort zone. Moon and Dementium aren't so colorful as most DS games, and they lack the familiarity of a game like Metroid Prime Hunters. These are games of atmosphere, and often, there's blood on the walls and malice in the air.

So it's fitting that their games are also about exploration, about discovering limits and new areas. Renegade Kid may not succeed in every aim -- and Moon does not -- but they're doing something different (at least, for the DS). When you're talking about a phenomenon like the DS, when everyone wants in, and everyone is releasing games on it, companies that go against the norm are to be lauded if they are at all successful. Though Moon is uneven, it succeeds in a lot of ways, and so it is to be lauded, too.
More and more, it seems like Dead Rising for the Wii is not a harmonious port, adjusted to a new engine to improve the controls and to allow a new set of fans to enjoy the experience of knocking zombies down with bowling balls. Instead, it looks like Dead Rising is being pushed into the Resident Evil 4 engine with few to no adjustments to suit Dead Rising itself, even if they would make sense for the gameplay. According to the latest issue of Nintendo Power, Frank can no longer jump -- though we don't know if that includes attacks that require jumping. Does that mean weapons and items on certain ledges and overhangs will no longer be there, or will we have a special "action" button? Less tolerable still might be the changes to the items and melee weapons. Despite the Wii port's focus on the fun of poking zombies in the eye with broom handles and the like, with Chop 'Til You Drop, you can only carry one melee weapon at a time ... and the game will have fewer items overall.

That means most of your serious weaponry will be given over to guns. But it opens up a lot of questions, such as: what counts as a melee weapon under this system? Can you only carry (the horror) one small chainsaw at a time? Does that mean you'll automatically drop that chainsaw if you pick up one of the big table umbrellas to knock aside a bunch of zombies? And how, exactly, does that increase the fun factor of the game? Guns were great in certain instances in the original, but even an increased emphasis on shooting (and better controls for it) can't possibly compare to whipping through a crowd with Adam's chainsaws. The combination of chainsaws and zombies might well make up this blogger's vision of the perfect afterlife.

Some of us are trying to stay positive, because any Dead Rising should be (or at least, could be) fun, but Capcom, you're not making it easy. Perhaps, once played, all fears and worries will be assuaged, but at this point, we're looking at a totally different game ... and not sure it sounds all that fantastic.

For those of us in the United States, this week may be notable for more than video games, despite the debut of the fascinating Big Bang Mini ... and that may not even be limited to us! Well, Big Bang Mini is, but the news goes everywhere.

Of course, if you think about it, so do DS games, if you want to pay international shipping. If you want an Obama DS Lite, well, you've gotta do that yourself.
That doesn't mean, however, that we won't criticize it occasionally, and so we're going to point out that the latest screenshots, though intriguing, are a little uneven.

We've seen this room before, and it looks tremendous; bright and colorful while still keeping the abandoned atmosphere of the game. But a few of these shots look a little messy; there are ragged, ugly edges on the protagonist. It's probably just the old curse of Wii stills, but next to the rest of the shots from the game, which are mostly fantastic, they stick out.

Fragile screens: great setting, uneven quality originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 19 Jan 2009 09:53:00 EST. We thought it had disappeared completely, and after Spore failed to take the world by storm when it was released, we ... well, we kind of forgot all about it. Will Wright didn't forget, though, and Spore for Wii has resurfaced, only now it's going to be Spore Heroes and not a port of Spore itself, like the DS version. And speaking of the DS, another game is apparently slated for the handheld, as a companion: Spore Heroes Arena. Details are slim at the moment, but that doesn't matter; what does matter is how you feel about this development. Thanks to the homebrew community's continuing effort to turn the DS into the Swiss army knife of portable devices, soon, we anticipate the DS will be able to do just about anything ... and official releases offer a lot of practical options, too.

DSMetronome is the product of Demented, who noticed a hole in the system's abilties and filled it in tremendous fashion, building a clean application with built-in help. It may be simple, but DSMetronome does exactly what it's supposed to do, and does it well. Some games have included metronomes, but if that's all you need or want, this app may work well for you.
DSMetronome makes your handheld more useful originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 15 Jan 2009 13:24:00 EST. There's only one thing more explosive than new Big Bang Mini screens, and that's a new Big Bang Mini trailer.

Wait, no, really, that's completely inaccurate. Lots of things are more explosive than video and images, including, uh, actual fireworks, but maybe we can get away with the hyperbole when we're talking about a game that uses fireworks. Anyway, despite the extended opening and music from the other Big Bang Mini trailers, this footage from the schmup is new, fresh, and even a little Brazilian. Hopefully, even if you don't, you can at least give the creators their due. We sure like to, because some really dedicated fans can put together wonderful costumes ... costumes so wonderful we have no choice but to appreciate their cosplay!

But we see lots of Mario and Link and the usual suspects, so during these special community spotlights, we like to shy away from the typical. In our last look at cosplay, we saw characters from some of the best DS games represented, but this time, we just looked for more unusual selections. Take the guided tour of our findings here, or just jump right into the gallery below.

Four Swords cosplay image found here.

If someone suggested the notion of Link and Midna cosplay to you -- wolf Link, that is -- you'd probably think Midna would be the more lifelike one of the pair, yes? Not this time, buddy. No, while this little Midna is great, down to the details and the little legs, it's the wolf who really shines ... especially when you get to the video after the break.

But we'll give you a hint: there's a person in there. Wolf Link is made of people.

deviantARTist LilleahWest calls this pair of costumes a work in progress, but if it gets much more accurate, we're not sure we can handle it. Also? This wolfsuit was made in only twelve days. That's dedication.

A reader sent the photo in to our friends at GoNintendo, and posters at NeoGAF also report the Nintendo Power cover. Word of mouth on the game has been incredibly positive, so we would be excited even if we weren't talking about Phantasy Star Zero. But we are, so that means we're over the moon. Are you as excited as we are? Sure, it's possible to play most of 'em from the deepest recess of the sofa (even Wii Fit, if you want to cheat, you cheater), but alternately, if you feel like running back and forth in an aggressive game of Wii Sports tennis, or jogging until your legs fall off with Wii Fit, you can. But you've got to have the proper motivation first. For some, that's as simple as finding joy in bouncing around aimlessly ... and for others, that motivation lies in being forced to <strike>respond like a trained monkey</strike> run about in order to get your controller to respond.

It's a neat idea in theory, and one we've seen before, but the execution of this one may be somewhat lacking. How are you expected to do any precise aiming, or, hell, accomplish anything at all while jogging in place? Worse, you probably have to jog with authority just to get everything to register.

They'll probably sell oodles of 'em, regardless.
Continue reading jOG, for the laziest gamers

jOG, for the laziest gamers originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 16:25:00 EST. Time to branch out into new territory, right? That's just what they're doing with Deathbringer -- an ARPG ... uh, with puzzle elements.

Listen, when the hybrid works, it works. And most RPGs have some puzzle elements somewhere, so despite the hilarity of Infinite Interactive doing the opposite of what they've done before, it's not too far off the beaten path. Of course, they could probably make a game about scooping doggy poop off the sidewalk and we'd play it. That Puzzle Quest was some fun. Hit the break to see what they have to say about their forthcoming Deathbringer, which will be released for nearly every console known to man. Think companions and co-op. Maybe they should have named it Awesomebringer..

[Via NeoGAF]
Continue reading Infinite Interactive mixes it up again with Deathbringer

Infinite Interactive mixes it up again with Deathbringer originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 08 Jan 2009 09:00:00 EST. ... at least, this might be called a "leisurely drive" if, say, you really enjoyed an all-terrain, life-threatening romp with lots of gunfire. Which is actually pretty likely if you're interested in Renegade Kid's Moon. The latest from director and co-owner Jools Watsham shows off some of the game's vehicular mayhem, courtesy of the LOLA-RR10, which is all armor and pew-pew-pew-style action. Which is to say that she ain't as pretty as a BMW, but she might be up for the title of "ultimate driving machine" ... on the moon.

Contrary to some reports, Moon releases next week. If you're very, very good, we might tell you whether or not it's as fun as it looks.
I think he's just about the cutest thing ever, which meant he was a clear choice for a Show and Tell session. This foray was made easier by the fact that I'm clearly not alone in this opinion -- there's Mega Man stuff everywhere. If it can be pieced together out of blocks, there's a retro Mega Man version of it, and this week, we're celebrating some of the great fan-made creations we've seen. Take the guided tour right here, or simply jump into the gallery below to enjoy Mega Man.

There's not much going on this week unless you're a DS fan in North America. If not, you're a bit out of luck, as Europe, Australia, and Japan have no new games scheduled this week, and here ... well, there's a slight scattering of other games, but mostly? It's the DS show. We've got at least one interesting title headed out, too: the Elebits follow up. Moon is scheduled, but we think that one's really headed out next week rather than this week. Time and the store shelves will tell, though.
The game was first announced last April, with a then-lightning fast release scheduled for a mere two months later. But June came and went with no multiplayer hack-n-slash game anywhere to be seen, and after a time, we were told October. Later, February. Now? According to GameStop, we might see Gauntlet in April, a year after the game's initial confirmation. And even that's not official.

So what's happened to the game? "Official" hands-on reports and impressions have been positive, even when they criticize certain aspects of the game, like its framerate (from impressions of last year's version), though some of our readers have reported negatively on the game. After so many delays, we have to assume Backbone Entertainment was doing something to the game, but what, we just don't know.

Lots of people have been speculating that the next entry in the Lego games franchise, to follow up Batman and Indiana Jones, would be something to tie in with the release of the next Harry Potter film. However, gaming site videogaming247 claims a source let slip to them that, instead, the next Lego game by developer Travellers Tales would be Lego Rock Band. Let the chorus of "what???" begin.

While this one is a tough rumor to swallow, for reasons of rights, viability, and silliness -- and we're always mistrustful of these anonymous sources, no matter who they're talking to -- Lego Rock Band would be both hilarious and completely awesome, so we're going to cross a few fingers.
Apple users have long gloated that Nintendo's sleek new form factor with the DS looked great alongside their Apple products, but it looks like the DS can be made to fall in with other products, too. BenHeck.com forumite goteking produced this awesome Vaio-branded DS Lite by setting the logo into a replacement shell. The result looks pretty nice next to his laptop.

[Via BenHeck.com forums]
Continue reading Nintendo Vaio Lite, for people who want to match

Nintendo Vaio Lite, for people who want to match originally appeared on Joystiq on Fri, 02 Jan 2009 11:30:00 EST. While Nintendo couldn't boast the biggest-selling game in Japan in 2008 -- that honor went to Monster Hunter Portable -- but the company dominated ASCII Media Works' list of the top 30 games of the year. In fact, the entire rest of the top ten is split between DS and Wii titles, as does most of the rest of the list. A few PSP, PS3, and PS2 games pepper the top thirty, but they're the sparse, skinny trees in the grand forest of Nintendo. Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii took the top spots for Nintendo (2 and 3, respectively), while the DS game Rhythm Tengoku Gold snagged the sixth slot, tops for the handheld. Perhaps the best news is that many of the non-Nintendo games have Nintendo versions coming out soon, so next year, the Wii and DS may be even more dominant.

At #30? New Super Mario Bros. Yes, still. For the full list, check after the break.

Continue reading Nintendo (mostly) owned Japan in 2008

Nintendo (mostly) owned Japan in 2008 originally appeared on Joystiq on Wed, 31 Dec 2008 12:06:00 EST. Not long ago, reader Josh sent us pictures of a "DS beach party" -- that is, a group of friends partying at the beach, and playing DS together during downtime. That's relaxation we can get behind. But not only were the pictures great to see (thanks, Josh!), but it got us thinking about other group DS experiences. The handheld is so well-suited to group play, just as with the Wii, that we figured there were plenty of examples from the greater gaming community, and that's what we're sharing with you today in our gamer spotlight. Take the guided tour here, or jump right into our gallery of group sessions, if you prefer.

Gallery: Show and Tell: The more the merrier

EA's Mirror's Edge is a beautiful game, if a bit flawed, and the highly-physical, parkour-inspired gameplay would suit the Wii's motion controls quite well. The only problem is that it wasn't made for the Wii! What's a gamer to do? Clearly, the answer is this: make a video demonstrating just what Wii controls, with the Balance Board, for Mirror's Edge could look like.

The video is well made, but there's a long lull at the beginning giving everyone their due, and after that, the controls-and-gameplay windows are small, so there's really not a lot of meat to it. But the video, and the notion behind it, is interesting enough for a watch. If you were hoping for a lot of releases this week, we're sorry to disappoint you, though we hope that the holiday glut has left you satisfied ... because it's likely these games will not. Australia seems to be taking a hiatus from releases this week, and our reliable source for European and Japanese releases is doing the same, so this is all we've got:

Pirates: Duel on the High Seas

8 Ball All Stars

Hurry Up Hedgehog!

Well, there's always next week. Happy post-holidays!
DS releases for the week of December 29th originally appeared on Joystiq on Mon, 29 Dec 2008 16:15:00 EST. It looks like Square Enix and Level-5 are making up for a long silence on the game, considering we're looking at more than two dozen (!!) new screenshots, and lots of new goodies for the title. In the recent screens, loads of new things were revealed: at least two new monsters were shown (Zucchinya and Moomon), as well as one, and maybe two new classes.

While we've only seen someone labeled Bodybuilder (possibly new?), the Traveling Performer (possibly minstrel) was officially revealed. Among the performer's abilities are acrobatics and making the monster laugh ... too hard to attack, we presume. If it laughs and then kicks your ass, it's not much help.

Traveling Performers would be restricted to one of the goofier faces, in a perfect world.
