Earlier this week, we ran our second PS3 poll and asked the question: Who would you like to see take over Sony's PlayStation business?

I loved this poll question and was really looking forward to your responses. So, without further ado... a whopping 2% of PS3 Fanboys voted for... me, Ed Stasick. Okay, so it was really neck-and-neck between Steve Jobs and Kaz Hurai with Jobs having a slight edge (36% of the votes versus 32% for Hurai).

Last week we debuted PS3 Poll Police, our new weekly poll for PS3 Fanboys. We asked the simple question: How many PS3 games do you own? And, wow, what a response! Giving American Idol a run for it's money, we had a tremendous voter turnout... 3,550 votes and counting!

As you see, most of you (27%) own 3-4 PS3 games. And another 21% own two. For you math whizzes out there, that means that nearly half of us have 2-4 PS3 games in our collection. That's not bad for a console that's been out just a few months. Of course, the vote is a bit skewed by those 18% of voters that still think the Xbox rulz...

One of our favorite rags, PSM: Independent PlayStation Magazine, has a world-premiere super-exclusive in their next issue. It's our first real peek at Haze, the FPS thats "poised to take over PS3" later this year.

According to the lucky fools at PSM:

· The main premise of the game is a war in Central South America that involves large corporations with an large weapons R&D budgets. Then something goes horribly wrong...

· "The prized product that the biomedical research and enhancements division produces is a substance known as Nectar that, when injected, makes soldiers better fighters."

· "Due to the realistic high dynamic range lighting in Haze, it's very easy for enemies to disappear into the shadows, particularly in outdoor levels and at night. A shot of Nectar will pull them into the foreground in a halo of light."

The magazine promises more (and hopefully more substantial) information next week when the June issue hits stands.

It's been a day of videos at PS3 fanboy. But here's one you don't want to miss. You might remember our jaw-dropping introduction to the full "This is Living" mini-movie a couple of weeks ago. Simply put, this video is... awesome! So awesome in fact, that it was pulled from YuTube in mere minutes for "gross violations of YouTube policy." Many Xbox fanboys would go on to add that Sony had cossed the lines of "common decency" and had "warped their simple little minds." I'm here to say that every word of that is true. If you are under seventeen years of age, I beg you to turn away now!

Kenny KOK, maybe it's not a serious as all that "cold, dead hands" stuff, but it's clear that ousted retired PlayStation chief, Ken Kutaragi, will be a part of the PlayStation world for some time to come. Krazy Kenny K is just down, but he's not out! The main man behind all things PlayStation is working to ensure that his "master plan" gets executed... one way or another.

According to an interview with EE Times, Kutaragi stated that: "As a matter of course, I have the vision of PS4, 5 and 6, which will merge into the network. Now I'm ready to start working with a much wider world."

Wow, for consoles with a minimum 10-year lifecycle, we'll be living with the ramifications of Kenny's "PS3 through PS6" vision until most of us are... dead. Here's to hoping that advances in gene-therapy will keep us all alive long enough to experience Ken's PlayStation end-game. I can't wait. Of course, the SIXAXIS will have destroyed us all by then.

With a new movie and a new book hitting this Summer, Harry Potter mania is in full swing. Taking advantage of that momentum, EA released 3 new screens to the muggle world today, including one from the game's climatic battle with "he who must not be named." While we were mildly excited by the trailer, our hope has been dashed by screens that look like they're from a mediocre PS2 release (at best). Of course, EA knows that they don't have to put their best foot forward here... anything with the Harry Potter label is going to sell well.

Newsweek, always known for their hard-hitting interviews, tackles a tough Q&A with Dr. Richard Marks regarding Sony's EyeToy 2.0. The bottom-line? The new PlayStation Eye rocks. Hard. Here are the important details:
  • It's not the "eye," but the "ear" that truly differentiates the new device. The hands-free voice input may be the single most important feature of Playstation Eye.
  • The camera works in extremely low light. Tests showed that just the illumination of a flat-screen monitor was enough to illuminate image subjects.
  • The device supports both 640 x 480 resolution at 60 frames per second and 320 x 240 resolution at 120 frames per second.
  • Playstation Eye was designed to mirror the cost structure of the original EyeToy. Translation: you should be able to afford this.

MTV got to spend some quality time with the upcoming PS3 eye-toyish game, Eye of Judgement. As MTV points out, it's a cross between virtual-reality and Star Wars Chess. And it looks like a little Magic the Gathering may be thrown in for good measure. Anyway you look at it, it's all cool and we can't wait to get our greedy little hands on it. This one screams innovation.

MarioWhile some believe that Krazy Kenny K killed the PlayStation brand with his handling of the PS3 develpment and launch, some of his competitors are potentially looking at Sony's loss as their gain. At a press conference yesterday, Nintendo's own chief executive made a couple of comments regarding Kuturagi's recently announced retirement. According to Go Nintendo, "Mr. Iwata stated that he would love to see Kutaragi join up with Nintendo."

While this is most certainly just Nintendo paying respect to Mr. Kutaragi with some kind words and a tip-of-the hat to a man who has contributed a lot to the industry, it is interesting to think of the possibilities. Imagine Nintendo's next console, the WiiToo, under the develpment skills of Kuturagi... what would he do with it? What would he put in it?

Well, at least it's not a WW2 shooter this time around. Call of Duty 4 is breaking out into the modern warfare era, and we'll admit that it's look pretty good (an gritty). The hint of nuclear weapon deployment gives this a slight edge in the next batch of military shooters headed our way.

It doesn't take a genius to realize that Kuturagi is scape-goat #1 for any and all of the PS3s alleged failings (which include, but are not limited to, high production costs, launch shortages and lower than desired post-launch sell-through.)

Given the abrupt end to the Kuturagi saga, the analysts are already coming out with their takes on "what went wrong." Business 2.0 writer Chris Taylor has plenty to say on how Sony lost their lead and has "lost this round of the console wars to its Japanese rival, Nintendo's Wii." While we think it's too early to be making those kind of calls, the article is interesting -- even if we don't agree with the analysis in whole (or even in large part). For our lazier readers, Business 2.0 provides these key lessons from Sony and Kutaragi's PS3 development:
  • Focus on making a better controller, not relying on the same "handheld mess of buttons" (i.e. Dualshock design = failure)
  • Don't put drives in your console that are too slow to properly load games (I'm not making these up)
  • Build a console that only costs $150 like the Wii (they have since corrected this little doozy of a detail)
In the end, it turns out that this is really an article about what Nintendo may have done right. And there's no doubt that Sony has done -- and is doing -- some things right as well. We'll see how that plays out in the months and years ahead. Then we'll declare a winner (that's your cue, Xbox fanboys... attack!).

Rogue WarriorSure, the game's not due out for another year, but some teeny, tiny boxart has popped up for the SOCOM-like Rogue Warrior on the PS3.

In Rogue Warrior, you play as real-life ex-SEAL, Dick Marcinko, and fight in a fake war that has you trapped behind enemy lines in North Korea on a covert mission to assess the threat posed by North Korea's nuclear arsenal as North and South Korea decide to play King of the Hill.

The game plans to differentiate itself via "contiguous levels using Unreal 3 streaming technology. Central to the game's single and multiplayer experience is the idea of a freeform battlefield, where players are given the freedom to choose how to complete a given objective, allowing for creativity and surprises, rather than heavily scripted events and tightly contained spaces traditionally used in this genre."

Look for this in April... 2008!

It's a Summer sequel trifecta. First Parker. Then Pirates. And now, Potter. The amount of movie-tie-ins this year is truly spectacular. What may be even more spectacular is that all of them don't look like hacked together pieces of crap. Spidey looks mighty nice. And so does Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix. The latest game in the magical franchise looks to have an impressive amount of detail and the character models look solid. Actual gameplay could be another story, but we're cautiously optomistic.

The "original WW2 FPS" will see it's newest incarnation, Medal of Honor: Airborne, take flight this Summer. Previously delayed from Spring, we have high hopes for one of the best console franchsies anywhere.

"Medal of Honor Airborne is a new direction for the franchise introducing innovations that redefine the series as well as impact the FPS genre as a whole," explained Neil Young, VP and General Manager at EALA. "We can't wait for August when everyone can experience the new Medal of Honor, the first WWII game that allows the player to land anywhere and truly fight the way they want to."

TurricanGood news, old-schoolers! It looks like the legendary Turrican is making a long overdue comeback. In an interview with Gamasutra, Lair developer, Factor 5, spilled the beans regarding their plan to resurrect the franchise:

"We've been concepting quite a bit internally. That's another universe creation thing. I was looking at Metroid Prime's reinventing of a franchise that had been out there for quite awhile, and we're facing the same thing with Turrican."

Unfortunately, Factor 5 didn't reveal in target timeframes for delivery. Given the "concepting" comment, we don't expect this one for quite a while. Of course, maybe that's just what they want us to think...

Like peanut butter and chocolate, they're two great tastes that go great together. It was only a matter of time before some evil genius (i.e. Mad Catz) combined the PS3's SIXAXIS controller with a keyboard for easy data-entry and web surfing. It seems like a no-brainer, though we've got to question some of the design choices... is the top of the contoller the must logical place for a thumb-pad? Here are the specs:

With new GTAIV information in such short supply these days, you can count on your favorite fanboy blog to latch onto even the most miniscule piece of news and parlay it into a full-fledged post. Of course, we're talking about Xbox 360 Fanboy (we kid, we kid!). Fortunately, we've got a little bit more to go on than just the confirmation of suped-up whirly-birds. According to ComputerandVideoGames.com, GTAIV is filled to the brim with all kinds of fun stuff:

"Despite the absence of planes, helicopters are still in the game. AI has been improved and you can still get yourself a virtual girlfriend." It's only a matter of time before the sequel to Hot Coffee, aka Steaming Latte, is discovered within the games code. Jack Thompson will boycott, prompting an instant sell-out and making it the biggest videogame success this side of Halo 3.

Besides all that, CAVG has lots of good information on the progress in making the new Liberty City a "living city" and how Rockstar is continuing to add lots of graphics polish to an already polished engine.

Yesterday it was Spidey! Today it's Captian Jack! This is definitly the "Summer of the Sequel" at movie theaters, and, as you might imagine, that sequelitis has carried over to the console world via a slew of movie licensed tie-ins.

While we were excited by the potential shown in many of the Spiderman 3 trailers, we haven't gotten the warm an fuzzies from the Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End gameplay trailers. And the latest PotC trailer doesn't do anything to change our minds. With bland graphics, lackluster platfoming and museum pacing, we're worried about this one. At least we have the movie to look forward to...

Are you feeling lucky, punk? If you are, then you might just enjoy staring down the barrel of Hei$t for the PS3. This game is definitely a mixed bag... taking place in the mean streets of the 1960s, Hei$t focuses on larceny and features voice command controls to help you execute and control your team of criminals. It's like combining Starsky and Hutch with Thief with SOCOM. Not that that's a bad thing.

Can developer, Codemasters, pull it off? According to IGN, there are some reasons to be worried...

"Visually it's neat enough but nothing exceptional and the code we saw was a bit jerky. The order system needs to be tightened too and, without actually seeing the chase sequences in action, it's impossible to give an indication of whether they really will deliver the intense ride Codies is promising. And with just six months to go before the game is scheduled to come out, there really is a lot to do if Hei$t is going to meet our expectations."

We're big fans of innovation, so we'll be keeping our fingers crossed that Hei$t can overcome its challenges by the time it hits stores late this year.

The Summer movie season is about to kick-off in a big way with the premiere of Spiderman 3 on May 4th. The movie is getting some good reviews and we can only hope that the game will to. The latest trailer for Spiderman 3: The Game focuses on developer Treyarchs goals in bringing the virtual Spiderman to life this time around. Grand vistas, hot spidey-on-arch-enemy action, beautiful graphics and different play styles are the themes of this sneak-peek. It looks like they might have nailed this one...

First, the bad news. Posession, a game of the zombie genre, has been indefintely delayed. The good news? The games developer, Blitz, has put the game in temporary limbo to make way for a top-secret next-gen game that will be headed to the PS3.

"Work on Possession is temporarily on hold, but only because we've reassigned the team to work on a major new project on PS3 and Xbox 360."

Now, what the "unnamed game" is all about is anyone's guess. The only clues we have are:
  • It is a radical departure from any of the games Blitz has developed before (probably a good thing)
  • It is being published by an as-yet-to-be announced mega-company
  • It ultilizes technology originally developed for Posession
  • Blitz will be recruiting heavily to expand the team assigned to the unnamed game
Looks like we should start scouring the game industry job boards for posts by Blitz. There are a TON of openings on Blit's own website. Anyone have any guesses here? I'm hoping for a sequel to Burger King's Sneak King.

But, if you have a hankering for a new PS3 game (and who isn't?), and you haven't been bitten by the Virtua Tennis bug yet, then you owe it to yourself to give this franchise a try on the big, black monolith.

Sure, this looks like a scene from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy (right down to the white hair of the hero), but that's not exactly a bad thing. A new sequence of just-released DMC4 screenshots shows off an epic fight between our intrepid protagonist and one heck of a boss. This battle looks huge... and beautiful.

We don't mind sharing this game with that other next-gen console so much, we just want this one sooner rather than later. If, like us, you can't wait, you can see many more super-impressive screens over at GamePlanets.
