What makes these places memorable? This week, Kim examines the town of Silent Hill, as featured (specifically) in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/silent-hill-hd-collection">Silent Hill 3</a></em>.</small></font><br /><div> <hr size="2" style="padding-left: 5px; " width="100%" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/oh-the-places-youll-go-silent-hill-3"><img alt="Image" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/04/silenthillmap.jpg" style="margin: 4px; width: 530px; height: 350px; border-width: 0px; border-style: solid;" /></a></div>When was the last time you were good and scared? I'm talking your heart thumping so fast each palpitation hits you like a truck, anxiety growing deep in your stomach as you walk around each corner, while the uncertainty of what lies ahead floods you with absolute paranoia. Sometimes an atmosphere can drive your experience into more than you could have imagined, taking hostage of your sanity and throwing you into a whirlwind of your worst nightmares.<br /><br />The town of Silent Hill brings that kind of emotional adventure. <em>Silent Hill 3</em> starts with a dream -- a fog-filled, abandoned amusement park where you're simply wandering around aimlessly. It's not long before you run into a Closer: a large, red-tinted creature with massive, crushing arms, trying to trap you. The choice is yours. You can fight back or book it, but either way this dream ends in death. It's just a dream, though, right ... ?<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-hd-collection-tgs-2011/">Silent Hill HD Collection (TGS 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-hd-collection-tgs-2011/#4454402"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/sh2historicalsociety01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-hd-collection-tgs-2011/#4454403"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/sh2pyramidhead01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-hd-collection-tgs-2011/#4454404"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/sh3diner03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/silent-hill-hd-collection-tgs-2011/#4454405"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/09/sh3park02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/oh-the-places-youll-go-silent-hill-3/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Oh, The Places You'll Go: Silent Hill 3</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/04/03/oh-the-places-youll-go-silent-hill-3/">Oh, The Places You'll Go: Silent Hill 3</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 03 Apr 2012 21:00:00 EST. Read as she explores the nooks and crannies of each (probably war torn) landscape. This week, we bring you to The Citadel, recently featured in <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mass-effect-3/">Mass Effect 3</a></em>.</small></font><br /><div> <hr size="2" style="padding-left: 5px; " width="100%" /></div><div style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/27/oh-the-places-youll-go-mass-effects-citadel/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/me2citadel.jpg" style="border-top-width: 0px; border-right-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-top-style: solid; border-right-style: solid; border-bottom-style: solid; border-left-style: solid; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; width: 530px; height: 300px; " /></a></div>The view from space shows the Citadel teeming with life. Each of its five arms is illuminated with a criss-crossing series of lights, almost like a circuit board. These talon-like extensions connect to the Presidium ring, the center of Galactic commerce and politics. They can also change like a chameleon; when closed, the Citadel becomes a fortress, no longer looking like it's the bastion of life, but instead a sleek, clean cylinder into which nothing can enter - or from which no one can escape. Hey, if you're going to find a safe place during the war, this is probably your best bet.<br /><br />Yes, the Reapers are coming, ready to slay us with their steely tentacles and laser eyes. And in these moments when you feel so small and helpless in the fight to save the galaxy, there's only one thing to do: escape. Let Shepard worry about the Reapers; take a load off and come on down to the Citadel, a marvel of technology, not only full of mysteries, but also the core of civilization.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mass-effect-3-spring-shocase-2012/">Mass Effect 3 (Spring Showcase 2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mass-effect-3-spring-shocase-2012/#4868009"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/me3screen1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mass-effect-3-spring-shocase-2012/#4868010"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/me3screen2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mass-effect-3-spring-shocase-2012/#4868011"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/me3screen3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mass-effect-3-spring-shocase-2012/#4868012"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/me3screen4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/mass-effect-3-spring-shocase-2012/#4868013"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2012/03/me3screen5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/27/oh-the-places-youll-go-mass-effects-citadel/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Oh, The Places You'll Go: Mass Effect's Citadel</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/27/oh-the-places-youll-go-mass-effects-citadel/">Oh, The Places You'll Go: Mass Effect's Citadel</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 27 Mar 2012 19:00:00 EST. Wolves and bears have taken to this world, along with a few new creatures you've never truly set eyes on, such as Kobolds, rat-like humanoids who mysteriously don't seem to gather candles.<br /><br />Many visitors often have troll sightings. Be sure to refrain from feeding them, as you would be the snack! A warning for those who are arachnophobic: the Dalentarth region has a bit of a spider problem. With giant poisonous spiders, though, this is the perfect place to conquer your fears. It doesn't get any better of a deal than that, so please send your thank you letters to our agency. We love helping you overcome adversity!<br /><br />Can we interest you in visiting a place that you thought only existed in your childhood fantasies? Take a moment and think back to when you were young, and in the blink of an eye, your imagination could turn anything into a mystical, magical place. That's the Dalentarth region of <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/Kingdoms-of-Amalur-Reckoning/">Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning</a></em> - a fantastical forest in bloom with the most vivacious, neon colors around every corner. It's a portal back to the wide-eyed innocence that let you see beauty where others saw only darkness. Let that inner child come back and dive into a world of non-stop wonderment, vibrant with life.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning-7-28-11/">Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (7/28/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning-7-28-11/#4328576"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/koabalor02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning-7-28-11/#4328577"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/koabolgan02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning-7-28-11/#4328578"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/koadokkalfarinterior5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning-7-28-11/#4328580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/koamelsenshir16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/kingdoms-of-amalur-reckoning-7-28-11/#4328581"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/koaniskaruhunter03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/19/oh-the-places-youll-go-amalurs-dalentarth/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Oh, The Places You'll Go: Amalur's Dalentarth</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2012/03/19/oh-the-places-youll-go-amalurs-dalentarth/">Oh, The Places You'll Go: Amalur's Dalentarth</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 19 Mar 2012 17:00:00 EST.
