Our own Christopher Grant filled in today for an arguably hotter, but sadly absent, Frag Doll in PAX's "new media" panel on blogging, podcasts and other fancy publishing formats on them there Internets. He sat down with Kotaku's Brian Crecente, Julianne Greer from The Escapist, and MC Wilson from the Broadcast Gamer podcast, while Major Nelson moderated, gracefully playing the role of "corporate shill" (we're just playin'). The Web 2.0 buzzwords flew, Google Ad-Words were firmly promoted, NDAs were promptly scoffed, and Chris and Brian managed to leave the stage without resorting to fisticuffs. (Sad, yes.)

E3 was a hot topic of debate -- even Major Nelson called it a mystery for Microsoft -- and all the panelists were unsure about the methods of coverage that will be available to them next year. An audience member mentioned that the Consumer Electronics Association (producers of that little Vegas show known as CES) are considering filling the gap, as we mentioned earlier this month, but it was still clear that future gaming shows are quite the mystery other than this weekend's obvious hit: PAX.

We hope you can forgive this bit of utter meta vanity -- we'll now return you to your regularly scheduled programming -- but first, Chris would like to thank his Mom and his insatiable hunger for brains for making all of this possible. Oh, and if you'd like to hear the full discussion, Major Nelson should be posting it as a podcast soon, in true new media fashion.
Joystiq's own Chris G. sweats it out at the PAX new media panel originally appeared on Joystiq on Sun, 27 Aug 2006 18:35:00 EST. Alright, we briefed y'all on what we knew so far about the Wii controller early this morning, but now that we've gotten our paws on the Wiimote itself, we wanted to let you know how it is in the flesh. Nintendo and millions of fanboys are betting a lot on this concept, and Nintendo itself said that "playing is believing" every other sentence of their keynote, so the real question is: do we believe?

The short answer is that we're just not sure yet. The first chance we got with the Wii was for a golfing game (the shortest line we found, go fig) and as soon as we got our hands on the Wiimote we knew it was something special. We slipped the wrist lanyard on so we didn't fling the remote across the room, and held in our hands the light weight, ergonomic, and simply beautiful controller. If this was as far as we'd gotten we would have gone home happy. The controller allows plenty of leverage for the trigger "b" and the large "a" button, and only slipped out of our hand once from a particularly aggressive sword strike in "Red Steel." Click on for the rest.
Continue reading Hands on with Nintendo's Wii controller

Hands on with Nintendo's Wii controller originally appeared on Joystiq on Thu, 11 May 2006 03:15:00 EST.
We're really finding ourselves short on bling-esque terms to ascribe to this golden
Game Boy; suffice it to say that the
bling has arrived, and it has made its dwelling among this old skool, b&w screened, beast of a unit. The whole
shebang weighs in at 27 ounces, and is made of 18K solid gold, along with diamonds surrounding the screen and set in
the on/off buttons. Better start saving up those gangsta'pennies of yours though, (you know, the ones with Lincoln in a
du-rag) this piece is going for a nice 25 grand.

Nothing like slapping a bit of bleeding edge technology into your forthcoming portable gaming handheld to grab a bit
of attention, and iRiver is doing just that with their announced plans for sticking
WiBro (that longer range, but slower tower
hander off-er) into their 2006 device. WiBro is looking to be Korea's Wi of choice, and iRiver is planning this device
for rollout along with the planned WiBro networks for South Korea. That's about all we know so far, other than their
aim to compete with the PSP with this guy. We'll keep you
posted, alright?

The poor old regular Xbox just doesn't
get much love anymore. The daily pressures of being a console are hard enough without the prospect of being supplanted
by a faster, slimmer, and whiter version of
itself. So show the old guy you still care with an additional four hard drives. That's right, 10GB just doesn't cut
it in this media centric world, so why not slap a terabyte of storage in there? You know you want to. The X5 is an
expansion kit that doubles the height of your existing box and adds the room for four drives (not included), a couple
of fans, and an external knob for selecting which drive to run from. There is a decent amount of work involved to
modify your unit with this expansion, but the instructions are fairly clear, and you won't be doing anything crazy like
soldering to execute them. Sure four drives are absolute overkill if you're just humming along with a standard issue
Xbox, but if you're running some of those mods all the hipsters are sporting these days, then this might be just the
ticket for your multiple bootable Linux distro fantasies.
