Microsoft has snapped up exclusive publishing rights to the first game from Haunted Temple Studios, the dev established by former EA Los Angeles staffers Jake Kazdal, Ben Vance and Borut Pfeifer. Under the agreement, the trio's original strategy offering, <em>Skulls of the Shogun</em> (which we first previewed <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/04/skulls-of-the-shogun-preview/">here</a>), will debut on Xbox Live Arcade under the Microsoft Game Studios banner.<br />
<br />
Haunted Temple's Kazdal, who worked on EA and Steven Spielburg's canned <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/lmno"><em>Project LMNO</em></a> with his two studio-mates, told <a href="http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/35917/Microsoft_Studios_To_Publish_Skulls_of_the_Shogun.php">Gamasutra</a> that Microsoft "totally got" <em>Skulls of the Shogun</em> and "have been fully behind it" since signing it. "The support we're getting out of them has been seriously as much as I could ever ask for," he added.<br />
<br />
The game, which we've made no bones about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/13/skulls-of-the-shogun-preview-dem-bones/">loving</a> so far, is due out this fall.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/15/microsoft-signs-skeleton-filled-strategy-title-skulls-of-the-sho/">Microsoft signs skeleton-filled strategy title Skulls of the Shogun for XBLA</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 15 Jul 2011 20:30:00 EST. Toymaker SOTA has announced that it's prepping a trio of exclusive, licensed video game-based items for this year's San Diego Comic-Con International, which runs July 21-24. The biggie (and by that we mean nearly a foot tall) is a statue ($160) of Morrigan and Lilith from the gothic fighter <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/darkstalkers"><em>Darkstalkers</em></a>, which depicts the two as they "fall, together, in a loose embrace, unaware of how much longer they have together" and "freezes in time a moment that Morrigan and Lilith wish to last forever." SOTA's words, not ours.<br />
<br />
Smaller and fluffier, a keychain-sized <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/okamiden">Okamiden</a></em> plush will be included as part of a "San Diego Comic-Con Impulse Pak" ($40) that features three of SOTA's non-game-related Bobble Budds. Finally, there's our favorite of the bunch: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darksiders"><em>Darksiders</em></a>' War astride his horse, Ruin, in an LED-lit statue (above, $250) that looks as hot as the flames erupting from the Apocalypse rider's steed.<br />
<br />
All three items will be available at the show and through SOTA's online store. You can view more pictures and details at the source link.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/07/08/sotas-new-darksiders-darkstalkers-and-okamiden-toys-go-to-comi/">SOTA's new Darksiders, Darkstalkers and Okamiden toys go to Comic-Con</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 08 Jul 2011 02:00:00 EST. Just in time for the Fourth of July fireworks, Subatomic Studios is bringing its hit iOS tower defense title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fieldrunners"><em>Fieldrunners</em></a> to Android -- and it'll be a buck on day one. The Cambridge, Mass. based developer has announced that the $2.99 price for its game will be cut to $.99 on Thursday, June 30, which is when it arrives on the Android Market. From July 1 on, it's full price. (Note: The press release, which says the game is free during the first 24 hours, is incorrect.)<br />
<br />
As its title suggests, <em>Fieldrunners HD</em> has undergone a visual upgrade for Android devices, with all its art assets getting a fresh coat of 950x540 resolution paint. Other than that, the game looks to be a facsimile of its previous iterations on iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad -- all of which were great. You don't need to be a West Point graduate to realize that grabbing this gem on day one is the winning strategy.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/28/fieldrunners-hd-storms-android-june-30/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Fieldrunners HD storms Android June 30, $.99 for first 24 hours</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/28/fieldrunners-hd-storms-android-june-30/">Fieldrunners HD storms Android June 30, $.99 for first 24 hours</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 28 Jun 2011 01:00:00 EST. As if it'd taken a swig from a bottle labeled "Drink Me," the price tag on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/alice-madness-returns"><em>Alice: Madness Returns</em></a> has diminished in size at Amazon. This week only, the retailer is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B004CD9X2C/amazon0b53-20/">offering</a> American McGee's second excursion into Wonderland for $20 off, making it $40 on PS3 and 360 and $30 on PC.<br />
<br />
The deal is available only "while supplies last," and joins similar week-long discounts on <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/s//ref=amb_link_356682702_7?ie=UTF8&amp;search-alias=videogames&amp;hidden-keywords=B002DC8GKE|B002DC8GKO|B002GDRPYI&amp;pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_s=center-5&amp;pf_rd_r=1KT0QC6GSVX3ZPP3RZVQ&amp;pf_rd_t=101&amp;pf_rd_p=1306501462&amp;pf_rd_i=409566"><em>Brink</em></a> and <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Witcher-2-Assassins-Kings-Pc/dp/B003VJNPPE/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1309198950&amp;sr=1-1">The Witcher 2</a> -- </em>which is also a fantasy game, but features far fewer flying pig snouts.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/27/amazons-vorpal-sword-cuts-20-off-alice-madness-returns/">Amazon's vorpal sword cuts $20 off Alice: Madness Returns</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 27 Jun 2011 20:00:00 EST. Remember the PSP? With all of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/ps-vita">PS Vita</a> news lately, we wouldn't blame you if Sony's current handheld had dropped off your radar. Well, Capcom's giving PSP owners a reason to charge up their systems again, dropping the prices on <a href="http://shop.capcom.com/store?SiteID=capcomus&amp;Action=DisplayCategoryProductListPage&amp;categoryID=3952300&amp;ClickID=cl7wqfq7za4z7fip4xxfe4s4vnklswl4kan&amp;affiliateProgramType=SOCIALSTREAM&amp;&amp;resid=TetQDQoBAlYAADRgXCoAAAAp&amp;rests=1308950442941">a portion of its UMD-based titles</a> (little discs, seriously!) while supplies last.<br />
<br />
Starting at $10 and maxing out at $20, the list includes: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/monster-hunter-freedom-unite"><em>Monster Hunter Freedom Unite</em></a>, <em>Power Stone Collection</em>, <em>Street Fighter Alpha 3 Max</em> and seven more. Capcom says the quantities of some titles are "extremely limited," so hit that source link fast if you're at all interested in this deal. You'll find the full list with prices after the jump.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/25/capcoms-store-slashes-psp-game-prices-for-limited-time/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Capcom's store slashes PSP game prices for limited time</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/25/capcoms-store-slashes-psp-game-prices-for-limited-time/">Capcom's store slashes PSP game prices for limited time</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sat, 25 Jun 2011 01:20:00 EST. ZeptoLab has a candy-filled treat for owners of Android devices: its hit puzzler, <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/cut-the-rope">Cut the Rope</a>, </em>has launched for the mobile platform and will be available free of charge for one week. The game is debuting exclusively on the GetJar app store but, according to its developer, will be made available through the Android Market and other branded e-storefronts eventually.<br />
<br />
<em>Cut the Rope</em> for Android will be ad supported during this initial period, so those who eventually pay for it will be getting something extra -- or, rather, something less, in terms of advertising.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/cut-the-rope-debuts-on-android-free-for-one-week/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cut the Rope debuts on Android, free for one week</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/24/cut-the-rope-debuts-on-android-free-for-one-week/">Cut the Rope debuts on Android, free for one week</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 24 Jun 2011 08:00:00 EST. We hope you're ready for improved system stability "during use of PS3 format software and network services," because that's what the just-announced PS3 firmware 3.66 is bringing -- and evidently nothing else of note -- likely any time now. PSN director Eric Lempel writes <a href="http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/06/22/ps3-system-software-update-v3-66/">on the PlayStation Blog</a> that this is a "minor update," though based on Sony's servers and your connection speed, it could be a less-than-minor interruption in your ability to play online.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/psa-ps3-firmware-3-66-incoming/">PSA: PS3 firmware 3.66 incoming</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 20:40:00 EST. A report by <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/06/22/sonic_generations/">Andriasang</a> claims that Sega has chosen tomorrow, June 23 to launch the demo for its remastered retro remix, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/sonic-generations"><em>Sonic Generations</em></a>. Although it doesn't cite a source for the information, the site says that the demo will be available for PS3 and Xbox 360, the latter requiring an Xbox Live Gold account to download. Additionally, the one-level trial game will evidently expire on July 12, vanishing from both e-stores and disabling itself if it's been downloaded.<br />
<br />
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has <a href="http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2011/06/22/heads-up-game-store-update-22nd-june-2011/">listed the demo</a> as part of tomorrow's European PlayStation Store update, lending a lot of credence to this news, although a representative for Sega America couldn't comment when asked by Joystiq if the demo is planned to hit the US tomorrow, too. It's entirely likely -- though not confirmed -- that the demo's release is being prepared as a surprise to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the <em>Sonic</em> franchise, which is, conveniently, June 23.<br />
<br />
PS3 owners in Japan would need another surprise tomorrow in order to play the demo, Andriasang points out -- that country's PSN is still offline, with no indication it will be brought back into service within the next 24 hours.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update: </strong>The <em>Sonic Generations</em> demo is now available on Xbox Live -- for the next 20 days.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/report-sonic-generations-demo-hitting-psn-xbla-june-23/">Report: Sonic Generations demo hitting PSN, XBLM on June 23</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 20:20:00 EST. It seems as if Sony wasn't quite feeling the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/playstation-vita">PlayStation Vita</a>'s rear touch panel at first. Speaking to Famitsu (as <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/06/22/vita_yoshida/">translated by Andriasang</a>), Sony's president of worldwide studios, Shuhei Yoshida, revealed that the portable's most groundbreaking feature was nearly stricken from the final design due to cost concerns. Specifically, Sony wasn't sure that the effect it would have on gameplay was worth its part of the sticker price.<br />
<br />
That changed, though, after people actually got their hands on it; it went from questionable to being a must-have feature. Yoshida said in the same interview that while the touch panel is definitely a keeper, some small elements of the Vita's design are still subject to change. We're guessing he means minor cosmetic tweaks, since the hardware we saw at E3 seemed pretty much final. Whatever gets altered, it'd better not involve removing the ultra-spiffy PlayStation icon pattern on the touch panel.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/playstation-vitas-rear-touch-panel-almost-got-bumped/">PlayStation Vita's rear touch panel almost got bumped</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 19:00:00 EST. Bethesda is going to give <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fallout-new-vegas"><em>Fallout: New Vegas</em></a> fans a case of the blues next month. "Old World Blues," the third DLC pack for the game -- joining <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/11/17/fallout-new-vegas-dead-money-dlc-drops-dec-21-on-xbox-live/">Dead Money</a> and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/17/fallout-new-vegas-honest-hearts-dlc-out-now/">Honest Hearts</a> -- arrives for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC on July 19. This new pack sees players trapped as subjects of a twisted science experiment. Also, as the screenshot above confirms, there will be <em>robotic radscorpions</em>. Yeah.<br />
<br />
The days leading up to the DLC's release will see a title update issued for the game across all platforms that promises to improve stability in "major areas," along with performance increases. Bethesda says to expect a trailer for Old World Blues soon.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fallout-new-vegas-old-world-blues-dlc-6-22-11/">Fallout: New Vegas -- Old World Blues DLC (6/22/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fallout-new-vegas-old-world-blues-dlc-6-22-11/#4243246"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/257072101502844308126732032077767288652995790421o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fallout-new-vegas-old-world-blues-dlc-6-22-11/#4243247"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/271464101502844307276732032077767288652964062419o_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/fallout-new-vegas-old-world-blues-dlc-6-22-11/#4243248"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/oldworldbluesscreens-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/22/fallout-new-vegas-old-world-blues-dlc-drops-july-19/">Fallout: New Vegas 'Old World Blues' DLC drops July 19</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 22 Jun 2011 17:30:00 EST. Aspiring future soldiers will get their first taste of playing as "F-16s on legs" in Ubisoft's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/ghost-recon-future-soldier"><em>Ghost Recon: Future Soldier</em></a> when the game's beta rolls out in January. "
<meta charset="utf-8" />
We know you have been asking about the beta," the publisher <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/GhostRecon/status/82933866804948992">wrote in a tweet</a> Monday, before saying, "
<meta charset="utf-8" />
We're excited to announce that the MP beta will be launching in January 2012."<br />
<br />
Ubisoft had <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/12/ghost-recon-future-soldier-preview/">previously said</a> a beta would launch this summer, but any hope of that happening was pretty much dashed when the game itself <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/12/ghost-recon-future-soldier-pushed-to-q1-2012/">was delayed into 2012</a> aka<em> the future</em>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/20/ghost-recon-future-soldier-beta-deploys-january-2012/">Ghost Recon: Future Soldier beta deploys January 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Jun 2011 21:30:00 EST. We'll admit that the premise of Sega's new cover-based shooter <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/binary-domain"><em>Binary Domain</em></a> by <em>Yakuza</em> boss <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/toshihiro-nagoshi">Toshihiro Nagoshi</a> -- man versus machine -- isn't the most immediately compelling, but this new trailer makes its nuances sound pretty cool. That is if you can get past the absolutely bored-sounding narrator.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/20/binary-domain-trailer-will-bore-you-with-story-details/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Binary Domain trailer terminates after the rise of the machines</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/20/binary-domain-trailer-will-bore-you-with-story-details/">Binary Domain trailer terminates after the rise of the machines</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Jun 2011 20:30:00 EST. I wouldn't blame you if your reaction to the announcement of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/trenched"><em>Trenched</em></a>, Double Fine's downloadable tower defense title, was entirely non-plussed and even a bit disappointed. "Wow, <em>how original</em>." After all, this sub-genre of strategy games is approaching -- or has already reached! -- full saturation. I <em>would</em> blame you, though, if you didn't give it a chance, because it's honestly a desperately needed breath of fresh air in the genre.<br />

It's not just that Double Fine's trademark wit and humor is evident in every facet of the game's design; <em>Trenched</em> a seriously polished and surprisingly deep game, too.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trenched/">Trenched</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trenched/#3941006"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/trenched-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trenched/#3941007"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/trenched-11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trenched/#3941008"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/trenched-10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trenched/#3941009"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/trenched-09_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/trenched/#3941010"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/03/trenched-08_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/20/trenched-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Trenched review: Let's mech love</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/20/trenched-review/">Trenched review: Let's mech love</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 20 Jun 2011 11:00:00 EST. Spring may have already sprung, but Microsoft appears ready to finally deliver its <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/21/kinect-for-windows-sdk/">promised Kinect for Windows SDK</a> to coincide with a live web event tomorrow, Thursday June 15. According to <a href="http://www.winrumors.com/kinect-for-windows-sdk-beta-available-to-download-this-week/">a report by WinRumors</a>, the release is being timed along with a special Microsoft <a href="http://channel9.msdn.com/Live">"Channel 9" streaming presentation</a> on the Microsoft Developers Network site.<br />
<br />
Microsoft Spain president Mar&iacute;a Gara&ntilde;a reportedly slipped the news during her presentation at <a href="http://www.redinnova.com/en/madrid/2011/the-speakers/maria-garana-microsoft">the Red Innova conference in Madrid</a> today. The MSDN site is currently hosting a countdown to tomorrow's announcement, which is when we'll presumably learn the full details of the beta.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/report-kinect-for-windows-sdk-beta-launching-tomorrow/">Report: Kinect for Windows SDK beta launching tomorrow</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Jun 2011 20:29:00 EST. It's an ongoing <em>Crysis</em> -- EA and Crytek have launched the second DLC expansion for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/crysis-2"><em>Crysis 2</em></a>, dubbed the Decimation Pack, for Xbox 360 and PC. Available right now <a href="http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/Product/Crysis-2-Decimation-Pack/23dd7056-f15f-4cb3-a41f-dbd56ee60fa4?cid=SLink">via the Xbox Live Marketplace</a> and as an in-game purchase for PC, the 800 MSP ($10) add-on content brings five new maps and two new weapons to the <em>Crysis</em> sequel's multiplayer mode.<br />
<br />
The added maps are: 5th Avenue, Apartments, Chasm, Plaza and Prism. Players' arsenals have been expanded with the long-range FY71 assault rifle and smoke grenades. This is the second multiplayer DLC for the game, which received the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/10/crysis-2-getting-retaliation-dlc-on-may-17/">Retaliation Pack</a> -- adding four new maps -- last month.<br />
<br />
Look for the the Decimation Pack to arrive on PS3 June 28. See the new maps and weapons in action after the break.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/psa-crysis-2-decimation-pack-dlc-out-now-for-xbox-360-pc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PSA: Crysis 2 'Decimation Pack' DLC out now for Xbox 360, PC</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/15/psa-crysis-2-decimation-pack-dlc-out-now-for-xbox-360-pc/">PSA: Crysis 2 'Decimation Pack' DLC out now for Xbox 360, PC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 15 Jun 2011 15:16:00 EST. Don't pay more for '<em>spore</em> -- at least that's Steam's motto of the day, as it puts the Maxis developer action-RPG hybrid <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/darkspore"><em>Darkspore</em></a> on sale for 40 percent off its normal asking price. From now through 4PM PST / 7PM EST on Thursday, June 16, the PC-only title is <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/99890/">going for $30</a>, down 20 bucks from the MSRP. Steam is also offering an eight-pack of the multiplayer-enabled game for $90, normally $150.<br />
<br />
Our <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/darkspore-review/">review said</a> that <em>Darkspore</em> was <em>all right</em>, but had "a lot of room for improvement." Now at least one way to improve it has been addressed: <em>make it cheaper.</em><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/14/steam-darkspore-40-off-for-midweek-madness/">Steam: Darkspore 40% off for Midweek Madness</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 19:40:00 EST. 	<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/duke-nukem-forever-review/"><img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dnf.review.061011-530px.jpg" vspace="4" /></a></div>
The year was 1997, and I'd just begun writing about video games professionally. Like most of my fellow gamers, I was pretty excited when 3D Realms announced that it was working on a sequel to <em>Duke Nukem 3D</em>, the runaway PC hit that it had released just a year before. At my first E3, a year later, I saw the game running for the first time. Now, just as my 14th E3 has come and gone, I'm sitting at my computer having finally played the finished <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/duke-nukem-forever"><em>Duke Nukem Forever</em></a>. Yet it feels like I'm still in 1998.<br />
<br />
That's because <em>DNF</em> is, for better but <em>mostly</em> worse, perpetually stuck in the late 1990s. For all the delaying, the stalling, the drama surrounding the game, it's tough to say if any part of it has actually benefitted from the more than a decade of development. What has, at long last, been committed to a disc and placed into a box might have been alright a dozen years ago, but by today's standards it simply doesn't hold up.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/">Duke Nukem Forever (E3 2011)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/#4211705"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dukeforevere3come-get-some_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/#4211706"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dukeforevere3dam_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/#4211707"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dukeforevere3forklift_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/#4211708"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dukeforevere3gonna-stomp-you_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/duke-nukem-forever-e3-2011/#4211709"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/dukeforevere3minecave_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/duke-nukem-forever-review-fail-to-the-king-baby/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Duke Nukem Forever review: Fail to the King, Baby</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/10/duke-nukem-forever-review-fail-to-the-king-baby/">Duke Nukem Forever review: Fail to the King, Baby</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 10 Jun 2011 12:30:00 EST. 	<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/02/igf-winner-desktop-dungeons-gets-a-facelift-up-for-pre-order-on/"><img border="1" hspace="4" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/desktop.dungeons.060211-530px.jpg" vspace="4" /></a></div>
Hailing from South Africa -- notably the home country of Joystiq editor Ludwig Kietzmann -- QCF Design is building on the momentum it earned at this year's IGF awards with its bite-sized roguelike <a href="http://www.desktopdungeons.net/"><em>Desktop Dungeons</em></a> by ... building on <em>Desktop Dungeons</em>. The game, which
<meta charset="utf-8" />
<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/03/02/live-from-the-igf-gdc-awards-2011/">took home Excellence in Design honors</a>, will be getting a major makeover for its full release on PC and Mac that "looks better, sounds better and is generally just more awesome," according to its developer.<br />
<br />
In addition to general gameplay and balance fixes, the release -- the game's currently playable in <a href="http://www.desktopdungeons.net/?page_id=11">a free alpha version</a> -- will evidently boast an entirely new inventory system with a focus on character class progression and converting weapons when they're worn out. Pre-orders are open <a href="http://www.desktopdungeons.net/?page_id=12">through QCF's site</a> for the standard ($10) and special editions ($20) of the game, both of which offer access to its upcoming closed beta. The latter includes a "commemorative building," extra quests and an addition character class. No longer on offer: a $75 "exclusive edition" that gets its purchasers referenced in-game and their names in the credits.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/02/igf-winner-desktop-dungeons-gets-a-facelift-up-for-pre-order-on/">IGF winner Desktop Dungeons gets a facelift, up for pre-order on PC and Mac</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 02 Jun 2011 17:20:00 EST. Codemasters hopes to fill your daily requirement for explosions with these half-dozen new shots from <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a>. Development on the new FPS, designed by <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/black"><em>Black</em></a> creator Stuart Black, continues apace despite <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/07/19/stuart-black-to-leave-codemasters-this-october-bodycount-still/">his departure from the project</a> and Codies is confident enough in the work so far that a demo is incoming.<br />
<br />
Game director Andy Wilson <a href="http://www.videogamer.com/news/bodycount_demo_planned.html">tells VideoGamer.com</a> that, "When people play it, they seem to really get on with it, so we want to put it in as many hands as possible." No word yet on a release date for the demo -- the full game is due "this summer" -- but at least we can <em>count</em> on there being one.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/">Bodycount (6/1/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181653"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/pb003tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181654"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/pb005tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181655"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/pb007tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181656"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/ti002tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/bodycount-1/#4181657"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/06/ti003tgajpgcopy_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06/01/bodycount-squeezes-off-six-shots-demo-on-the-way/">Bodycount squeezes off six shots, demo on the way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 01 Jun 2011 18:00:00 EST. Peripheral maker <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/mad-catz">Mad Catz</a> has announced that it's moving beyond just making flight sticks -- it's actually going to make the flight simulations to use them with. Forming an internal development group called ThunderHawk Studios, the company has set its sights on creating massively multiplayer air combat games that CEO Darren Richardson says will "leverage the market share leadership and global distribution enjoyed by our flight simulation hardware products."<br />
<br />
"The formation of ThunderHawk Studios is an important milestone as we pursue our longer term goal of expanding our participation in developing, publishing and distributing games," Richardson added. The first title from ThunderHawk is slated to go wheels-up in 2012, and we'd be surprised if we didn't see it in some form at next week's E3 expo.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/mad-catz-launches-thunderhawk-studios-gets-into-flight-sim-deve/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Mad Catz launches ThunderHawk Studios, gets into flight sim development</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/31/mad-catz-launches-thunderhawk-studios-gets-into-flight-sim-deve/">Mad Catz launches ThunderHawk Studios, gets into flight sim development</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 31 May 2011 21:00:00 EST. Joining the likes of "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/23/fear-3-trailer-becomes-the-king-of-soul/">Soul King</a>" and the imaginatively titled "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/fear-3-multiplayer-trailer/">F***ing Run!</a>" in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/fear-3"><em>FEAR 3</em></a>'s array of multiplayer modes is "Soul Survivor," a twist on the last man standing scenario. If you've found the official PlayStation 3 Bluetooth <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/18/ps3-bluetooth-headset-available-in-urban-camouflage-color-sche/">headset</a> a little too <em>monaural</em> (or small) for your liking, listen to this. Sony will be releasing the PS3 Wireless Stereo Headset this September, offering one more audio channel and a much larger, over-the-ear form factor for a cool $100.<br />
<br />
It's not actually a Bluetooth device -- the headset comes with a USB dongle needed to make it work, so getting that USB hub you've been thinking about would be a good idea if you want these cans. In addition to delivering "virtual" 7.1 surround sound and a fold-away boom mic, the rather hefty-looking accessory appears to include a PS2 Slim console over either ear. Weird, right?<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/27/now-hear-this-sonys-wireless-ps3-stereo-headset-arrives-in-sep/">Now hear this: Sony's wireless PS3 stereo headset arrives in September</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 May 2011 15:30:00 EST. Sucker Punch wants to reward its fans for being especially good ... or especially bad. <a href="http://ps3.ign.com/articles/117/1170993p1.html">IGN reports</a> that <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/infamous-2"><em>InFamous 2</em></a> offers an option to import Trophy data from the original <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/infamous"><em>InFamous</em></a>, which is then turned into starting bonuses in Cole McGrath's new adventure.<br />
<br />
We've got a rundown of what your Trophies are worth in the sequel after the break -- starting XP bumps and the like -- but the most interesting bit of info is that having unlocked specific story-related Trophies will actually alter the dialog and side missions in <em>InFamous 2</em>. We'd tell you what they are, but then <em>you'd</em> have to kill <em>us</em>. And also, we <em>don't know</em>, because IGN didn't say.<br />
<br />
Of course, you could also look at this feature as one big morality test: Will you be a goodie two shoes and choose not to import your data, or do it and effectively use a "cheat" right at the start of the game?<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/27/infamous-2-imports-your-infamous-trophy-data-to-grant-rewards-a/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>InFamous 2 imPorts your inFamous Trophy data to grant rewards, alter story</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/27/infamous-2-imports-your-infamous-trophy-data-to-grant-rewards-a/">InFamous 2 imPorts your inFamous Trophy data to grant rewards, alter story</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 27 May 2011 15:00:00 EST. There's nothing funny about a disturbed young girl clutching a giant butcher knife -- <em>especially</em> if she's near death and her Hysteria meter is full. When those morbid criteria are met, the star of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/alice-madness-returns"><em>Alice: Madness Returns</em></a> can launch into a psychotic frenzy that would <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/rumor-ninja-gaiden-3-loses-the-store-may-add-move-support/">make Ryu Hayabusa proud</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/26/alice-madness-returns-screens-are-hysterical/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alice: Madness Returns screens are hysterical</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/26/alice-madness-returns-screens-are-hysterical/">Alice: Madness Returns screens are hysterical</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 May 2011 20:30:00 EST. You may have already noticed, but cloud gaming service OnLive and publisher THQ have developed quite the relationship. First the two began <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/02/25/onlive-giving-away-free-microconsole-metro-2033-with-homefront/">offering free games and hardware</a> as pre-order bonuses, and now they're offering an exclusive demo for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/red-faction-armageddon"><em>Red Faction: Armageddon</em></a>. While it's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/red-faction-armageddon-demo-now-live-and-extra-magnetic/">already available</a> to Xbox 360 owners via Xbox Live, the only way that PC (and Mac) users are going to play the demo in the immediate future is through OnLive.<br />
<br />
The service calls this an "industry milestone," saying that the demo will remain its exclusive until <em>Armageddon</em>'s retail release on June 6. An OnLive account (free) is required to play the trial, which concludes with an offer to pre-purchase the full game from a retailer or the streaming service. Doing the latter will also net buyers instant access to <em>Red Faction: Guerilla</em> and a free MicroConsole system, in a promotion <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/armageddon-a-free-onlive-microconsole-with-red-faction-pre-order/">originally launched earlier this month</a>.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/26/red-faction-armageddon-pc-demo-hits-onlive-exclusively-for/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Red Faction: Armageddon PC demo hits OnLive exclusively (for now)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/26/red-faction-armageddon-pc-demo-hits-onlive-exclusively-for/">Red Faction: Armageddon PC demo hits OnLive exclusively (for now)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Thu, 26 May 2011 12:00:00 EST. NetherRealm Studios head and <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/mortal-kombat-2011"><em>Mortal Kombat</em></a> <strike>co-creator</strike> ko-kreator Ed Boon has revealed via <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/noobde/status/73447795331305473">his Twitter feed</a> that all of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/13/mortal-kombat-koming-april-2011-special-editions-announced/">the retailer-specific pre-order DLC</a> released for the series' ninth installment will soon be made available as one downloadable, for-pay kollection. "The 7 Klassic outfits &amp; 3 Klassic fatalities that were retailer exclusives will be bundled into one DLC package," Boon writes. "Trailer coming on Friday."<br />
<br />
For those who haven't been keeping tabs on said content, it includes "classic" variants of Ermac, Jade, Kitana, Mileena, Reptile, Scorpion and Sub-Zero, along with additional fatalities for Reptile, Scorpion and Sub-Zero. Hopefully Friday's trailer will be accompanied by a date and price, so we can note it on our kalendars and put aside some kash.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/mortal-kombat-retailer-exclusive-dlc-koming-for-all/">Mortal Kombat retailer-exclusive DLC koming for all</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 20:20:00 EST. Even though Square Enix has yet to iron out all the kinks in <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-14"><em>Final Fantasy XIV</em></a>, it plans to announce a third MMO during its current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2012). According to CEO Yoichi Wada, the title will co-exist with the company's two existing MMOs, the aforementioned <em>FFXIV </em>and still-running <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/final-fantasy-xi"><em>Final Fantasy XI</em></a>.<br />
<br />
In Wada's recent <a href="http://www.square-enix.com/jpn/ir/library/docs/110513/page06.html">investors presentation</a> (translated by <a href="http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2011/05/25/square_enix_mmo/">Andriasang</a>), the CEO doesn't indicate when the company plans to launch the new title, but does say that the game should be announced before the end of the fiscal year -- so by next April. For now, Square Enix is focused on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/24/big-changes-and-one-bighorn-beast-afoot-in-final-fantasy-xiv/">shaping up</a> the troubled <em>FFXIV</em> in hopes of an eventual release on PS3.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/square-enix-to-reveal-new-mmo-by-april-2012/">Square Enix to reveal new MMO by April 2012</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 17:00:00 EST. THQ <a href="http://investor.thq.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=96376&amp;p=irol-newsArticle_Print&amp;ID=1567382&amp;highlight=">announced</a> today that, through its THQ Partners unit, it would be handling the North American distribution of four of Codemasters 2011 releases. In fact, THQ Partners actually began its task today, with the release of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/dirt-3"><em>Dirt 3</em></a> into the retail channel.<br />
<br />
The deal also encompasses distribution of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/operation-flashpoint-red-river"><em>Operation Flashpoint: Red River</em></a>, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/bodycount"><em>Bodycount</em></a> and <em>F1 2011</em>. The new <em>Operation Flashpoint</em> hits June 7, with <em>Bodycount</em> set for "later this summer." Financial details of the deal weren't disclosed, but it has been confirmed that Codies will continue to handle the marketing of all four titles in-house.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/25/thq-takes-on-distribution-of-four-codemasters-releases-this-year/">THQ takes on distribution of four Codemasters releases this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 25 May 2011 02:00:00 EST. Twisted Pixel is taking a page from the script of TV's <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystery_Science_Theater_3000"><em>Mystery Science Theater 3000</em></a> -- and its web heir, <a href="http://www.rifftrax.com">Rifftrax</a> -- for some of the bonus content in its upcoming Kinect shooter, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/the-gunstringer"><em>The Gunstringer</em></a>. Designer Dan Teasdale dropped the news <a href="http://twistedpixelgames.com/wordpress/2011/05/24/twitter-questions/">on the developer's blog</a>, saying that the team was inspired to create "full commentary for the entire game" by the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mq6U6rBF8kk">spirited online riffing</a> given to <em>Sonic the Hedgehog</em> (2006).<br />
<br />
"It's not just us talking about making the game," Teasdale says of the commentary. "Much like how some of the best Rifftrax are the ones that have special guests, we've asked some special friends of ours to comment on specific plays in the game." The identities of the guests may be a secret, but we already know one possible candidate: Troma's Lloyd Kaufman, who's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/02/toxic-avenger-creator-lloyd-kaufman-joins-the-gunstringer-cast/">already been signed</a> to play the role of a reporter in the game's live-action sequences.<br />
<br />
Of course, the developer <em>could</em> go all out and get the master of riffing, <em>MST3K</em> and Rifftrax's <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/michaeljnelson">Michael J. Nelson</a>, to contribute -- something sure to get fans of his work all <em>MSTy-eyed</em>. Whoever's involved in them, the commentary tracks will be unlocked using in-game currency, after which, Teasdale says, "you'll be given the option to turn on the soothing voices of either us, or (more likely) our awesome special guests!"<br />

Ten years after the original <em>American McGee's Alice</em> debuted -- ten years! -- its sequel is nearly here. With its June 14 launch just over a month away, I accepted an invitation to dive into its fractured Wonderland and play through the first of its five chapters. Although a decade has passed, it felt like I'd never left.<br />

While the core game design hasn't changed much -- platforming interspersed with combat -- <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/alice-madness-returns"><em>Alice: Madness Returns</em></a> is harnessing today's tech to convey a visual spectacle that's closer to McGee's original concepts than the first game could get at the time. It's also capitalizing on some new design ideas dreamt up by its imaginative designers at Spicy Horse.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alice-madness-returns-5-12-11/">Alice: Madness Returns (5/12/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alice-madness-returns-5-12-11/#4130539"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/alicevstwo_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alice-madness-returns-5-12-11/#4130540"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/hatterdeaddodoswatermarked_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alice-madness-returns-5-12-11/#4130541"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/hatterpeppergrinderwatermarked_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alice-madness-returns-5-12-11/#4130542"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/hattersteamventswatermarked_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/alice-madness-returns-5-12-11/#4130543"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/vorpalbladeeyepot_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/22/alice-madness-returns-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Alice: Madness Returns preview: Pretty weird</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/22/alice-madness-returns-preview/">Alice: Madness Returns preview: Pretty weird</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Sun, 22 May 2011 18:30:00 EST. Konami is totally, deadly serious about <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/04/konami-announces-streaming-pre-e3-show-and-viewing-parties-for-s/">hosting viewing parties</a> around the globe for its E3 2011 press conference, in addition to a live web feed. Today it announced specific venues in San Francisco, Toronto, Mexico City, Los Angeles and S&atilde;o Paulo for the festivities, along with some sweepstakes to win a chance to attend.<br />
<br />
There'll presumably be booze on hand at these locations to help wash away the disappointment when you realize that, no, there's <em>still</em> no news on <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/22/kojima-gauging-gamer-interest-in-new-zone-of-the-enders/">Zone of the Enders 3</a>. </em>Full details on the locations, times and contest can be found past the break. Known for <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Savage-Season-Leonard-Vintage-Lizard/dp/0307455386/">his "Hap and Leonard" tales</a>, Joe R. Lansdale is one of the crime novelists lending their skills with prose to the upcoming <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/03/la-noire-the-collected-stories-bound-in-ebook-form-this-june/"><em>L.A. Complex has <a href="http://www.complex.com/video-games/2011/05/lansdale-la-noire-story">posted Lansdale's short story</a>, which is one of several that will comprise the full collection, due out June 6 as a digital-only release at <a href="http://www.amazon.com/L-Noire-Collected-Stories-ebook/dp/B004YYWHAY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&amp;s=digital-text&amp;qid=1304700598&amp;sr=1-1">Amazon</a>, <a href="http://search.barnesandnoble.com/LA-Noire/Rockstar-Games/e/9780316200868/?page=index&amp;prod=univ&amp;choice=allproducts&amp;query=9780316200868&amp;flag=False&amp;pos=-1,-1&amp;box=9780316200868,9780316200868&amp;ugrp=2">Barnes &amp; Noble</a> and the <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/book/l-a-noire/id435587935?mt=11&amp;ls=1">iTunes Store</a>. The world of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/monster-hunter"><em>Monster Hunter</em></a> will spread to another platform in June, franchise creator Capcom has announced. <em>Monster Hunter: Dynamic Hunting</em> is in development for iOS devices and will offer a "new intuitive control system...eschewing the typical D-pad" -- i.e., finger swipes and taps. It all looks a bit <em><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/infinity-blade">Infinity Blade</a></em>-ish<em> </em>to us.<br />
<br />
That's it for details, though more are sure to be revealed at next month's E3 ... just in time for the game to leap onto the App Store.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/monster-hunter-dynamic-hunting/">Monster Hunter: Dynamic Hunting (5/18/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/monster-hunter-dynamic-hunting/#4146002"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/img0122_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/monster-hunter-dynamic-hunting/#4146003"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/img0123_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/monster-hunter-dynamic-hunting/#4146004"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/img0124_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/18/capcom-unleashing-monster-hunter-dynamic-hunting-on-ios-devices/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Capcom unleashing Monster Hunter: Dynamic Hunting on iOS devices next month</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/18/capcom-unleashing-monster-hunter-dynamic-hunting-on-ios-devices/">Capcom unleashing Monster Hunter: Dynamic Hunting on iOS devices next month</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 May 2011 22:00:00 EST. Calling it a "Multiplayer Online Battle Arena" (MOBA) title, Ronimo Games has announced its latest creation, <em>Awesomenauts</em>. Destined for XBLA and PSN release, the game is "inspired by '80s animated series" and, though details are slim, appears to be a <em>Smash Bros. </em>style brawler<em>.</em><br />
<br />
Ronimo<em> </em>made its debut last year with the side-scrolling RTS title <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/swords-and-soldiers"><em>Swords &amp; Soldiers</em></a> for WiiWare, PSN and Steam. <em>Awesomenauts</em> will make its playable debut at E3 next month.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/awesomenauts/">Awesomenauts (5/18/11)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/awesomenauts/#4145893"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/awesomenauts01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/awesomenauts/#4145894"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/awesomenauts02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/awesomenauts/#4145895"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/05/awesomenauts03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/photos/awesomenauts/#4321629"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.joystiq.com/media/2011/07/4799characterrenderlonestar_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/18/awesomenauts-fights-its-way-to-xbla-and-psn/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Awesomenauts fights its way to XBLA and PSN</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/18/awesomenauts-fights-its-way-to-xbla-and-psn/">Awesomenauts fights its way to XBLA and PSN</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Wed, 18 May 2011 21:00:00 EST. The next big content update for Chair Entertainment's epic iOS sword battler, <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/infinity-blade"><em>Infinity Blade</em></a>, comes out swinging this Thursday, May 19. By far the most notable addition, the new Arena Mode introduces 1v1 multiplayer combat via Game Center.<br />
<br />
Also making the cut is Survivor Mode, which challenges players to last as long as possible in an endless gauntlet of Titan battles. A variety of new weapons and items are also being introduced, including special holiday-themed helms. Finally, <em>Infinity Blade</em> will gain Facebook integration with the update, enabling players to take and share screenshots of their characters through a streamlined process.<br />
<br />
The "Arena" update will be free of charge and, if past Thursday releases on the App Store are any indication, will actually roll out in North America this Wednesday night around 11:30PM ET.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/17/infinity-blade-arena-update-adds-multiplayer-survivor-modes-t/">Infinity Blade 'Arena' update adds multiplayer, survivor modes this Thursday</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 May 2011 16:30:00 EST. The latest game from the indie genius behind <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/04/05/hands-on-sleep-is-death/"><em>Sleep Is Death</em></a> has <a href="http://store.steampowered.com/app/104100/">arrived on Steam</a>, and we're infinitely happy. That's because <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/12/15/jason-rohrer-reveals-new-game-inside-a-star-filled-sky/"><em>Inside a Star-Filled Sky</em></a> ($8) is a shmup that happens to explore the idea of infinity, letting players journey into enemies, power-ups and even their character, which all become new levels -- all with more things to transition into and out of.<br />
<br />
If it sounds different and, well, kind of weird, it is. But you can find videos that do the best job of explaining its unusual premise at the Steam store, reachable via the Source link below. Just don't get lost in there.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/17/jason-rohrers-inside-a-star-filled-sky-shoots-onto-steam/">Jason Rohrer's Inside a Star-Filled Sky shoots onto Steam</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Tue, 17 May 2011 02:00:00 EST. 2K Games and Gearbox Software have just announced that members of the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/duke-nukem-forever"><em>Duke Nukem Forever</em></a> "<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2010/10/05/duke-nukem-forever-demo-access-included-with-borderlands-goty/">First Access Club</a>" -- those who purchased the <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/borderlands"><em>Borderlands</em></a> Game of the Year Edition or pre-ordered <em>DNF</em> -- will be able to download the first-person <strike>rauncher</strike> shooter's demo on June 3. You should have received an email asking you to confirm which platform you'd like it on.<br />
<br />
Watch Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford drop the news after the break.<br />

<strong>Update:</strong> Adjusted post to reflect that pre-orders also get in on the demo.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/16/duke-nukem-forever-demo-lands-june-3-for-borderlands-goty-owners/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Duke Nukem Forever demo lands June 3 for Borderlands GOTY owners and pre-orders [update]</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/16/duke-nukem-forever-demo-lands-june-3-for-borderlands-goty-owners/">Duke Nukem Forever demo lands June 3 for Borderlands GOTY owners and pre-orders [update]</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Mon, 16 May 2011 19:22:00 EST. Just hours after <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/modern-warfare-3-leak/">new details on the game</a> came to light, Activision has launched the first of likely many teaser trailers for <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-3"><em>Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3</em></a> via Facebook. Subtitled "America Under Siege," the all-too-brief clip drives home the fact that a focus of the <em>modern combat </em>occurring in this installment will be the USA's own front lawn.<br />
<br />
Enough explaining -- you can watch the 30 second video (reminiscent of <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/25/gdc-09-modern-warfare-2-coming-nov-10/">the one used</a> to debut <em>Modern Warfare 2</em> in 2009) after the break, after which we're sure you'll have all sorts of plot theories to share in comments. Make us proud!<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> We've added three more clips from Activision just after the break, teasing France, England, and Germany.<br />

<a href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/onlive">OnLive</a> is aiming to make its flat-rate, "all-you-can-play" PlayPack plan more attractive -- this time down the barrel of a cel-shaded rifle. The cloud gaming company announced today that Gearbox's <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/borderlands"><em>Borderlands</em></a> is joining the $10 per month selection of titles on tap for unlimited play.<br />
<br />
The hybrid FPS <em>slash</em> RPG joins a library of about 50 games available to plan subscribers, including the likes of <em>Just Cause 2</em> and <em>Tomb Raider: Underworld</em>. Along with news of <em>Borderlands</em> joining their ranks, OnLive revealed that PlayPack games -- some of which are not offered for sale -- can all be demoed for free as of today.<br />
<br />
Just recently, the company extended its program <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/11/pre-order-duke-nukem-forever-get-free-onlive-microconsole/">offering free MicroConsole hardware</a> to anyone who pre-orders <a href="http://www.joystiq.com/game/duke-nukem-forever"><em>Duke Nukem Forever</em></a> -- another 2K Games title -- via its game streaming service.<p><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/borderlands-joins-onlives-flat-rate-playpack-service/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Borderlands joins OnLive's flat-rate PlayPack service</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ffffcc;border:1px solid #ffff99;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.joystiq.com"><img src="http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.joystiq.com/media/feedlogo.gif" alt="Joystiq" style="float:left;padding:0 5px 5px 0;" /></a><a href="http://www.joystiq.com/2011/05/13/borderlands-joins-onlives-flat-rate-playpack-service/">Borderlands joins OnLive's flat-rate PlayPack service</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.joystiq.com">Joystiq</a> on Fri, 13 May 2011 17:20:00 EST.
