Big Boss

Although he's only the playable character in two MGS games (MGS3 and Portable Ops), Big Boss is, in many ways, the central character in the entire series. He is regarded as the greatest soldier ever, inadvertently aided in the establishment of The Patriots, initiated the creation of the first Metal Gear, and gave birth - through cloning - to Solid Snake, Liquid Snake, and Solidus Snake. He's also (supposedly) dead and gone.

Big Boss' impact on MGS4 can be felt in his desire (seen in Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake) to create a world that is always in need of soldiers. In MG1, Big Boss has established the "mercenary nation" of "Outer Heaven;" in MGS4, his "son," in Liquid Ocelot, commands the world's PMCs as the head of Outer Haven.
