The Shagohod

The Shagohod

Nuclear-equipped? Check. Battle tank? Check. Bipedal? Eh, not so much. That isn't to say this 1960s, pre-Metal Gear prototype is anything to sneer at, especially not if it's rushing towards you on a runway. With nuclear ICBMs proving too large and unwieldy to launch from a mobile vehicle, The Shagohod does away with the need for missile propulsion by igniting its own rocket engines. Think of it an athlete getting a run-up before tossing a javelin. A javelin that explodes and kills everyone in the stadium.

Special abilities: The Shagohod is massive, heavily armored and practically indestructible. Its rear missile carriage can be detached, affording the front section more speed and maneuverability. Naturally, it also has the standard assortment of missiles, bullets and inexplicable energy beams.

Weaknesses: RPGs can't put a dent in this thing, so launching an attack on the pilot is the best option. Its exposed treads are also vulnerable to rockets.

Trivia: The fight against the Shagohod is easily one of the longest and most involved sequences in the series, with a thrilling motorcycle chase ending in a climactic, rocket-propelled showdown.
