The CEA asks the FCC if CableCARD is helping to spur competition

Sep 22nd 2009 2:03PM (Engadget HD)
Screw Tru2Way and CableCards. Hopefully, the FCC will mandate Clear QAM for basic cable. That would eliminate the need for cable boxes for a majority of consumers and would make it easy for third party devices to get access to a wealth of content.

Poll: Do you / will you use Windows Media Center in your home theater?

I'm waiting for support for SDV and (hopefully) a new crop of improved extenders.

I'm hoping that lower cost tuners will be available as well, but that isn't a dealbreaker for me.

Returning to the gold standard and abolishing the federal reserve would be a good start to solving the financial crisis.

The quickest way to fix the world economy is to return to the gold standard.

VIDEO: Jay Leno's Garage welcomes the MINI E

Actually, the cost including taxes and fees is about $915 a month. I imagine that BMW is still losing a fair amount of money per vehicle at that price point. This program is more like a science experiment. Hopefully, they get good results and mass produce an electric Mini so that economies of scale can work their mojo.

Ask Engadget: Can a NAS device really change your life?

Oct 5th 2007 6:36PM (Engadget)
I've got the ReadyNas NV+ and I love it. It works flawlessly with Mac, Windows, and Linux clients. I'm also using a hacked AppleTV to play audio and video from. Being able to access my Handbraked DVD collection instantly is a beautiful thing.

I also like that it is easy to expand the storage array. I currently have 4x320GB hard drives which translates to ~870GB of usable space. That is rapidly filling and when I want to upgrade that I can replace the drives one at a time with larger drives. Once the final larger is initialized the array expands to the new, larger size.

The torrents would haven be run on an additional machine, but it would be easy enough to automatically save the files to an AppleTV accessible share on the ReadyNAS.

Bye bye, HiFi

I picked up one for $200 awhile back. It makes for a very nice mobile speaker. Even at that price it is pretty expensive since I only use it a couple times a month. Still, it is very convenient when I use it (and it sounds very good too).

How would you change the Apple TV?

Aug 13th 2007 12:27PM (Engadget)
I have an Apple TV and I like it quite a bit. I have a ton of movies stored on my NAS so this adds a ton of functionality to my setup at home. I did have to hack it to add more codec support (thanks Perian!) and to be able to mount and browse NFS shares, but that was pretty easy. It would be nice if that stuff was built in out of the box though.

I don't really see the need for it to have DVR/PVR functionality. That just isn't what this device is designed to do. I would like to see a more powerful processor to decode higher bitrates and resolutions. I imagine that the second version will have more horsepower.

My guess is that downloading HD content directly to the box from the iTunes store is coming in September when the new television schedule begins. Let's be honest, adding direct downloading is a no brainer and I think the reason we haven't seen it yet is because SD content looks like garbage. Stuff like the Washington Post HD video podcast and Macbreak look stunning on the Apple TV. So until stuff downloaded from the iTunes store looks that good I don't think there will be direct downloading to the Apple TV.

Transmisison 0.71 Fixes Announce Issue

Azureus certainly has more features and options than Transmission, but for some people that isn't a benefit. Different strokes for different folks.
