Metroid and Super Metroid had something that I think more games need: fear. A fear of the unknown. A fear of the beast. A fear of failure. The new games lack this because they tell you what to do. You know where you're going, everything's under control.
But not in this pitch-black Zebes. The blaring white readout says you have 35 points of energy and you still haven't found any of the weapons they promised you. This is at least the second time you've been here, in this room. You're praying to whatever God there is out there in the dead of space, asking that you don't run into that flying... thing, again. You run into a pack of it. They leave you on the brink of death, but their carcasses leave just enough energy to get you back to where you started. 35 points of energy, no weapons, and a room you've now been in at least thrice.
I never said you had to care. I'm just backing up my opinion because I don't want to sound like a fanboy leaving a message that simply means "Because I said so".
Why in the name of Ronnie James Dio does the PC version come with an X-plorer and not a Les Paul?
If I want to pretend to be a musician who is somehow better than Slash, Gene Simmons AND The Lord of Evil himself on a PC, I would hope to get the same treatment as everybody else.
Hmm... So now that's two games I'm somewhat interested in for the PS3, with Ratchet & Clank and this. But is it enough to make me want to pay $500+ for the console and said two games? No.
And before anyone goes "BUT TEH MGS4" (since it seems like every fanboy treats the series like it's better than sex), let me say that I have no interest in it whatsoever, as I hate stealth as a whole with a passion. Trust me, I can see the PS3 receiving some great games that aren't available on other consoles (and I'm quite content with getting an "inferior" version, unless it's a handheld version which will almost always suck), and this game is proof of that. Unfortunately, it's going to take more than Lara Croft after a sex change and a furry with a deadpan robot and a bunch of guns to make me get a PS3.
But hey, good to see Naughty Dog at the top their game again. Here's hoping the sequel doesn't make the hero all dark and moody or has nitroglycerin crates spammed all over the place.
An ugly recolored handheld, packed with a terrible game and a terrible movie which actually had me disappointed in the man who directed Evil Dead 2 (a feat I previously considered impossible) on a dead format.
