Wii and PS3 sales gap shrinking in Japan

Nov 2nd 2007 4:17PM (Joystiq)
The gap in 'rate of sales' is shrinking. I believe anyone with a brain can understand that as they read the article. If the gap in 'rate of sales' were to continue to shrink at this rate, the PS3 would presumably actually surpass the wii in 'rate of sales'. Only at that point would the overall cumulative sales gap be shrinking.

Valve's Gabe Newell comes down hard on PS3

Oct 11th 2007 12:59PM (Joystiq)
Well said. Mr. Newell quite simply doesn't have the pedigree on console games that other developers have. I would have liked to seen him take a run at developing for the good ol' SNES and Genesis. He seems like the type of guy who would crumble because there was no level 2 cache. Sounds like he has always taken for granted aspects of PC development that make things easier. A PC developer through and through.

I absolutely understand his issues...and the truth is concurrent programming is a bitch and sony is the first console manufacturer to go after handling the concurrent programming problem in earnest.

However despite the pain associated with its architecture, Cell represents the hard truth about the future of processing. Things have to get massively parallel to keep moving forward. The silicon is nearing its physical limits.

I am excited about the scalability of the Cell based system, and it is absolutely something that can be managed, although I agree it takes more effort and is a major paradigm shift for a lot of developers (myself included). I assert that the painful lessons learned in dealing with Cell are just a dose of reality as processing becomes more parallel.

I expect to see the native (not ported) PS3 games distance themselves from the 360 more significantly over time, which will definitely come at the cost of a lot of developers actually becoming a lot smarter about how they approach things for the new world of concurrency.

The funny part is Gabe wasn't able to cope even with a port and shipped it to EA to handle. Lower any respect I would have for him on the console side, especially given how obviously biased he sounds (and sounds like he desperately needs to compensate for the fact that he isn't comfortable with the brave new world)

Oh yeah, TF2 rocks Mr. Fatty!

40GB PS3 official for Europe -- no backwards compatibility, at all

Oct 5th 2007 2:24PM (Joystiq)
Here's a new one for you whiny little fanboys: You get what you pay for. If you want full backward compatibility then buy he 60G version. If you don't want to pay that much and can live with using your existing ps2 for ps2 games then buy the 40G.

But I think the obvious truth is that you low rent tards spent all your fry slingin money on 360s and now it just burns you up that others are forgeting about the crapbox and moving on.

Just because you can't afford a 60G, don't assume that others can't. And the price is coming down for the PS3 provided you dont need the BC. The 60G is a stupid buy if you don't care about backwards compatibility. If you do care about playing ps2 games, buy a slim ps2, or get the 60G.

Oh yeah...Any for all you bitches with your "I won't buy one until.....". STFU. Nobody cares if you buy one or not.

Uncharted developer discusses PSN demo, HD support

I'm with you. I always just ignore Mr. Rocker, but something about this particular comment was just so unbelievably whiny. So I replied to him, and I also post very rarely. I think his 'double 1080p' post was a new low-water mark for the NDF poster child.

Well I usually can just ignore you, but when I read this comment I just couldn't believe what a whiny little asshole you really are.....

New Afrika trailer is not very helpful

Sep 21st 2007 3:05PM (Joystiq)
I assume it is a game where you photograph animals. IF that is true, that game is going to sell very very well because the casual game players will like it. Kids will like it. Girls will like it (you know, the other half of the population). I wouldn't expect I would find it particularly interesting, but I would buy it for my kids. It will be a big hit (sales wise), and if you degenerate adolescents can't see that so much the worse for you.

2K addresses BioShock widescreen issue

Aug 22nd 2007 7:21PM (Joystiq)
The truth is you commie widescreen guys seem to be pissed that the fullscreen guys arent forced to play the game with a narrower tube like field of view.

All of these images showing various aspect ratios with constant height show this rather well. Irrational made the shocking choice of letting the 4:3 guys experience the game as intended (being able to see the same amount horizontally), and because they didn't just letterbox the 4:3 view you widescreenies are bithcing to high heaven. You are such idiots.

BTW I have a widescreen HDTV so I am not a 4:3 'fanboy' :)

2K addresses BioShock widescreen issue

Aug 22nd 2007 7:11PM (Joystiq)
Sure you could say that to you it looks weird, but nevertheless it is not a "mistake". It is a decision made by the developer. Getting the FOV "right" is always very important for a game, and here is a game that received 100/100 reviews etc. and I would say that based on that they got it right, and they said they tuned the FOV for widescreen. They felt that it was important to have a given horizontal field of view, (probably because moest enemies etc are likely to be to the right or left rather than up or down presumably)which they preserved in both versions. The 4:3 people got some more pixels on the top and bottom at the expense of a shrunken and therefore slightly less detailed version of the intended and tuned view.

I agree that FOV can be a matter of taste at times so of course you may think it looks weird to you, but it looks perfect to the developers of this incredible game and that is why they set the FOV the way they did.

2K addresses BioShock widescreen issue

16:9 and 16:10 users get their full display filled with what the developer thought was the optimal view of the virtual world. 4:3 users get a shrunken version this optimal view, plus some extra sh*t on the top and bottom that the developer never thought was necessary.

Psycho ranting fanboys are hilarious. In fact they probably actually believe that the scene was rendered in full and then the pieces were literally 'chopped off' to make the wide screen version. I recommend that these fanboys start with some books on real time rendering (Watt for example) so they can understand projections and viewports. Otherwise they will continue to look like morons.
