Nintendo patents inflatable cushion -- you know, for horseback riding

Aug 11th 2009 4:48PM (Joystiq)
Looks like Mxyzptlk has fallen on hard times since Superfriends went off the air. At least Nintendo's keeping him gainfully employed posing for patent applications. Get on the ball, Nintendo! If you've got Mxyzptlk on your payroll, can't you at least magic up something like, DS-to-Wii connectivity, or playing games online without friend codes?

GDC09: Disneyland's 'The Haunted Mansion' is a first-person shooter

Mar 28th 2009 3:03PM (Joystiq)
Actually, if you asked Electronic Arts they'd set you straight on this.

Disney's Haunted Mansion is a guided first person experience- they have magic mirrors, spooky sounds, animatronic puppets, a dropaway entrance floor, , and a few other surprises that evolve the genre in many ways. Disney has added so much to Haunted House that comparisons to first-person shooters should quickly fade away.

I could totally use a GPS unit too. You can keep the game if you want.

Heavy Rain on checkpoints, please don't use them

Quantic Dream had a similar gameplay mechanic in their game Omikron, which was available on PC and DreamCast. The game definitely had its flaws including loading times, slow-down-then-speed-up framerates, and jarring switches from 3rd-person to 1st-person gameplay. Players who suffered through were rewarded with a fairly deep storyline set in a science-fiction domed city.

PSP-3000 LCD response time is twice as fast

Actually, if they were copying Nintendo's playbook the new PSP would be exactly the same, but now available in your choice of 5 vibrant colors. "Look! A red version. Buy it all over again!"

OXM finds Xbox 360 games that have flatlined online

Aug 12th 2008 6:26PM (Joystiq)
I'm sorry to see that this was covered in such a negative light. Yes, the article was amusing, but the thrust of it was that players should be embarrassed to have their gamertags seen playing out-of-date dusty titles. Actually, the ability to have online support for most XBL games far past their "use by" date is a big feature for me.

It's one of the main reasons why I'm willing to shell out an annual membership for XBL.... because I rarely have to worry about a game's online play getting canceled before I've had my fill of it. If there's still 2 people in the world looking to play a particular game online, we can make plans and meet up at a specific time.

Intel: Some example of Ray Traced gaming likely in 2-3 years

This story seems suspiciously familiar to the stories that were floated around circa 1998, which predicted that the next generation of consoles would cease using polygons in favor of voxels.

Battlestar scribes working on Aliens: Colonial Marines

This story is woefully lacking in the word "frak", a shortcoming that I hope the comments will address.
