Happy 10th birthday, WebKit!

Aug 25th 2011 10:59AM (TUAW.com)
Why does the mobile version of the TUAW website still fail to show comments? Engadget figured out how to do it right, and they ain't even an Apple specific blog.

Three reasons iWeb may be doomed

Apr 22nd 2011 1:30AM (TUAW.com)
Web needs to go cloud and have an iOS app, I think. Services like Posterous and tumblr do what I think Apple would be keen on doing; provide quick, simple, and nice looking websites. Services that offer sites that can be generated and viewed on mobile devices, but also offer the flexibilty to create unique custom themes.

How can I go fully iOS if there isn't an app for that? ;-)

Verizon iPhone 101: What new owners need to know to get started

Feb 7th 2011 10:46PM (TUAW.com)
Hello,

How do I protect myself from apps phoning home (or to advertisers) with my personal information? The WSJ article I read a couple months back has me concerned. I wish to know ahead of time what an app will be sending to whom _before_ downloading it, but also be able to keep track of what is being sent. From my understanding even the seemingly reliable apps have been naughty and sending off info such as addressbook contacts, phone ID, and location data. Is there a LittleSnitch for the iPhone?

Early access to Verizon iPhone: One guy got his already

Feb 7th 2011 12:55PM (TUAW.com)
Hello,

My order arrived from UPS. I too was surprised by the UPS track # I received on Friday for my purchase, because I thought Apple was FedEx only. The phone arrived from the Verizon Wireless Fulfillment in Fort Worth, TX. Inside the box was the iPhone, a "Getting Started Guide" by Verizon containing a few page dual-language activation guide, and a UPS return label. I haven't unboxed the phone yet, as I need to get my vmail things in order first. Of note, my employer purchased some iPhones via a business account within an hour of my non-business early AM purchase, but they have not even received a track # yet.

iTunes 9 Focus: iTunes LP

Sep 13th 2009 12:46AM (TUAW.com)
Hello,

I suppose these do not work with the AppleTV, right?

Nice tear apart jay, I look forward to a user friendly method to creating my own "LP". Maybe just prettying up a wikipedia or discogs entry and wrapping it up with the music for a quick iTunes LP. :-)

cheers!

TUAW Guide: Setting up the Ultimate Mac mini Home Theater

Aug 22nd 2009 12:24AM (TUAW.com)
Personally, I do not need system for an on par or better-than-the-Arclight movie experience. If I had the cash to swing a private theater with 8-channel surround, stadium seating and nice draperies, I wouldn't drive it using a sub-1000$ HTPC. If mosxs has a dedicated theater room with the environment to match the tech specs, more power to hir, but there are a whole lot of ppl who shop on specs and "potential" with little real world necessity. You know, the SUV buyers of AV equipment; "but someday I MIGHT do this, so I need to buy it!" :-P

Hackintosh netbook compatibility updated

Jul 28th 2009 6:30PM (TUAW.com)
As these netbooks become lower in price, the more I want to buy a $100 touschscreen kit and turn one into a side table tablet. I could use it to control my home automation doodads, control my iTunes library, access my webcam, make skype calls, and have it be a digital frame with weather and news widgets while it is idle.

Reader's unibody MacBook Pro catches fire!

May 20th 2009 1:34PM (TUAW.com)
Hello

For safety's sake, do not leave *any* device charging on carpet, upholstery, blankets, or pillows. Only charge items on a solid surface with plenty of ventilation. This goes for laptops, battery chargers, mobile phones, cameras, and similar items (especially those with Lithium-Ion batteries). If a cord or electronic device is defective or worn and subsequently overheats or burns, having it on a solid surface will minimize the potential of a fire spreading.

Knowing is half the battle!

Better safe than sorry? Trend Micro Smart Surfing for Mac

Apr 27th 2009 7:46PM (TUAW.com)
There is that one annoying MS Word macro virus that pops up every so often on Macs in my circle. ClamX will quarantine the thing, but will not sterilize the infected Word .doc. If it is not eradicated in a certain way it will keep reinfecting every new document, so that is a bit of a hassle.

"This script will simply make a folder on your desktop of documents folder with the current date and put all the data in that folder."

Quick desktop cleanup for the lazy. :-)
