Metareview: Heavy Rain

Feb 24th 2010 9:20PM (Joystiq)
@Wiizer Are you serious? Why such a childish response? There are a mixture of opinions out there. A "meta-review" by definition ought to give a full picture of what the critical community is thinking. I'm not making demands. I'm simply pointing out that I think this particular meta-review is flawed because it presents a very one-sided picture. Nothing more than that.

I should thank you though, for reminding me why I generally avoid adding my comments to anything game-related.

Metareview: Heavy Rain

This is an unfairly weighted meta-review. There were a number of respected outlets that didn't care for the game, and I feel like to leave them out corrupts the whole intent of the meta-review, which is ostensibly to provide an accurate portrait of what the critical community thinks of the game.

Yo Joe? More like: Oh no, G.I. Joe game impressions

This preview captures the feel of the game, but I walked away with a completely different opinion of it.

It looks like a fun, thought-free waste of time along the lines of EDF 2017, only with less epic catastrophe and more fan service. The visuals are OK in the grand scheme, but they do an adequate job of creating a virtual GI Joe world. All they really showed yesterday was part of one level, so there's definitely still room for things to be fouled up. But it looks like an entertaining way to spend one's gaming time, especially if the lack of split-screen/lack of camera control works well in couch co-op mode. Plus, the unlockables sound very tasty. Skins. Old-school PSAs. I expect many a GI Joe fan - myself included - will be pleased.

1UP director Sam Kennedy: UGO not 'the bad guy'

Jan 7th 2009 12:11PM (Joystiq)
Yes, but Sega is starting to turn around. This year is shaping up to be a monster one for them. MadWorld, Empire: Total War, Alpha Protocol, The Conduit, Bayonetta, Stormrise, Aliens: Colonial Marines... lots of really tantalizing stuff. I'm sure not all of this will arrive in 09, but it's at least proof that the publisher is once again on the upswing.

Exclusive: UGO in high-level talks to buy 1UP; EGM not part of deal

"UGO certainly brings back some memories...but then again, so does Nintendo Power, and at the time, I didn't really care about journalistic integrity or writer bias."

Why would you question UGO's integrity? Is it just that you haven't read the site in several years? UGO shifted focus to content-driven output more than two years ago. There's still ad-supported content there, but that's a given on the Internet.

It's just too bad UGO's site layout is so clunky. All of the daily games content now just appears on their blog.

Joystiq's official Left 4 Dead survivors über-list

Gamertag: OscarZetaAcosta

Availability: Random hours
Preferred difficulty: Anything really. Just don't expect my A-game to amount to much in expert. Yet.

Branching Dialogue: Wild file preservation (and other Far Cry 2 stuff)

This is an excellent set of observations. I reviewed the game myself on a console, so quicksaves never even entered the equation. But the game is very effective at letting you build your own emotional attachments with it at every turn, and part of that definitely has to do with the time investment and the fear of losing. It's similar to how survival horror games work, but with very different results.

Pioneer develops 16-layer, 400GB Blu-ray disc

Jul 7th 2008 9:54PM (Joystiq)
"For reference, that disc could hold roughly eight copies of Metal Gear Solid 4, 187 copies of Final Fantasy VII, or 1.25 million copies of the original Super Mario Bros."

Excellent. What a great way to frame it.

I want 1.25 million copies of SMB.

Call of Duty: World at War revealed, Treyarch to develop

Jun 9th 2008 8:49AM (Joystiq)
I think (maybe hope is a better word to use here) you guys are taking the "alien" comment a bit too seriously. Read that quote closely: a "new, SEEMINGLY alien fighting force." If memory serves, US forces were taken pretty off guard by the ferocity of Japanese fighters, their willingness to lay down their lives rather than accept defeat. I remember being told or reading one story of a Japanese soldier who snuck out to an abandoned US Marine boat after an amphibious assault. He then used the boat's mounted machine gun to attack US forces from behind.

That said, if Treyarch decides to go the sci-fi route with COD, I'm officially done with this and anything else they do with the series.
