The only stagnation that would happen is on the hardware side. A unified console does NOT mean there will be no innovation. Instead the onus of innovation would be on the software and not the hardware side. If we all remember how atari died, it was simply because people got bored of playing the same/crappy games. This would force software developers to innovate more than they do now. Also as a hardware product reaches mass saturation, they will eventually introduce more advanced hardware to get people to buy hardware again and the cycle continues. There was no format war for DVD remember?
