Jul 30th 2008 8:29PM (Joystiq)iPhone versus iPod touch pricing: Say what?
Jun 9th 2008 3:29PM (TUAW.com)But this is all VERY STRANGE. It is not made any less strange by the following:
1. The Education Rebate Offer is TOTALLY nonsensical now.
2. The Touch software update - coming at the same time - will still cost $10 more.
WHAT.
This is basically a huge screw to people like me who wanted to use the rebate. Sure, you're still getting a free iPod, but now it's almost certainly going to drop in price... but I'm thinking that won't happen until the new ones are introduced in September.
This keynote was ridiculous. It was a fangasm for all the iPhone people and a pretty big nothing for anybody else. Anybody, that is, who doesn't want to shill out $99 for features that already exist on platforms, (Gmail, Flickr), used by more people.
Students: Get an iPod touch free with qualifying Mac purchase
Jun 3rd 2008 1:46PM (TUAW.com)It's obvious that they're trying to clear inventory but it's a really cool offer. I don't know if I should keep the Touch or eBay it when the new stuff is announced in September.
- Oh yeah, the window from when the offer ends to when you can enter the rebate is one month, till October 15th... hmm...

Jan 24th 2008 12:31PM (Joystiq)The city is... OK. It's not the gigantic behemoth that the hype would like you to believe. It's big, yes, but it never takes too long to get from place to place. The drive-thru concept is absolutely insanely brilliant. Road Rage events can seemingly go on forever, no matter which direction you go in the AI cars show up, and if you're badly wrecked you can hit up an auto-repair and be golden... instantly. I hit 47 takedowns in one RR.

Oct 3rd 2007 11:52AM (TUAW.com)I think in a few versions of the iPhone we'll se one that's open for third party apps, but they didn't want to risk anything with the very firt model. Of course it can be argued that there isn't anything malicious to risk, but Apple saying there's a threat and closing the phone is easier and simpler for them than ignoring it and POSSIBLY creating a problem. It's a problem that probably would never happen, but most potential consumers, (IE, everybody who owns or wants a cell phone), won't see the difference.

Jun 12th 2007 3:38PM (TUAW.com)The line between web and "real" apps on the iPhone
Jun 12th 2007 11:09AM (TUAW.com)I totally understand that this means there are strong restrictions on the type of app that the iPhone can run. I understand that this undermines developers and I know why many are upset. But the iPhone ALREADY ships with most of the features people want anyway. Would it be cool to add your own customizable stuff? Sure, but I don't know how that would really affect most iPhone users.
With Google Docs sort of leading things, web apps are slowly taking over. Why would I want to download an application to my iPhone when I can just access it online, if service is available? (Inherent irony here is understood, does not need to be pointed out, heh).
Don't get me wrong, I totally understand the outrage at this. But I also think that maybe 80% of the buying community has little to no problem with this "feature." I also think the iPhone will eventually open up, and I'm sure on June 30th it will already be hacked. But I'm also of the mindset that sometimes Apple does things to cover its own self, in order to prevent harmful apps or anything that could mess with the UI. I know that most of the apps developers wanted to make weren't going to do that, but it is possible.
I think everybody needs to remember that the iPhone is a new, ground-up product. It's not going to be perfect right away, for any number of reasons. I'm not getting one at launch until they iron everything out. I'd like to see developers create some really kickass web software that maybe shows the 'Inc the necessity and power that independent developers have. But until then it would be nice if everybody could cool their jets, if just for a little.
