Greenpeace: Nintendo bad for the environment

Oct 31st 2007 5:41PM (Joystiq Nintendo)It shall sit horizontally as the gods foretold.
I am clumsy and cringe at the thought of a console falling over, wireless or not!

Did Web-only development fail the iPhone?
Oct 19th 2007 3:17PM (TUAW.com)They do have a near perfect browser for handling a new generation of mobile web applications, but unfortunately the mobile web seems to mainly still be in beta. With limited speeds it's important to trim the transmission for mobile apps to a minimum. that's why there is a Google Maps app that doesn't download a pound of javascript before it begins running.
If Apple really expected to keep tight control over the included apps, they should have spec-d out the machine and/or gone with a faster network. At the end of the day it's a total waste to be constantly downloading all of the extra bits to present info in HTML, not to mention you should only access the web to find info that isnt easily offered by the handheld. Some mobile apps dont even need to communicate so what sense does that make?
I'd say that the iPhone (esp. safari mobile) is still a boon to the web2.0 community, but the device itself is not going to realize it's potential without the SDK

DS Daily: At last (maybe)
Oct 4th 2007 6:59PM (Joystiq Nintendo)So far it's totally awesome. I just beat windwaker earlier this year (my first zelda start to finish) so this was a no-brainer. The controls are amazing, I am knee deep in Link's Awakening but it always makes my hand cramp up.
They did a great job merging the windwaker style and cinematics, with the classic 2-d feel, all while introducing a new control scheme that I think really adds a greater feeling of freedom than before!
The spirit of NES Zelda lives on in Phantom Hourglass
Oct 2nd 2007 1:12PM (Joystiq Nintendo)Germany gearing up for maglev railway
Sep 27th 2007 11:25PM (Engadget)Thanks for the counterpoint. I wholeheartedly agree that maglev has high potential for longer range and express routes! I just wanted to point out there is also a lot of unexploited potential left in the steel trains. I thikn we'll be seeing both technologies side-by-side for ages as long as we keep building trains.
Germany gearing up for maglev railway
Sep 27th 2007 6:52PM (Engadget)Sure you can travel at breakneck speed, but you can get pretty damn fast on steel wheels and steel rails. The real key to increasing ridership on trains and transit is Quality of Service and Ease of Use. Even a maglev train has to make stops and it's important that the system is designed to move people around optimally. That means lots of systems to plan and implement the logistics of these operations.
Plus theres some basic physics to think about. How much energy does it take to lift a GIANT FRICKIN' TRAIN a few inches off the ground? How much energy does it take to hold a wheeled train off the ground? Sure you kill a little friction, but anyone who's been on a road bike can fathom that air molecules are a much bigger enemy than your rolling stock when it comes to friction!
It's cool but impractical, let's get back on the ball with our existing rails and prove we have an alternative to auto;s rather than focusing on flash and dash
