I got to speak to Alex St. John about the issue when he made the comment at Casual Connect Seattle last month. He really is dead on with most things. In fact he commented on the financial issues of GameTap before it came to head last week.
I think he is right about the end of most cosole gaming in the idea of how games are bought, but I can see one more gaming console coming out, very later than sooner than the time it was from the Xbox to Xbox 360 flip. I think Microsoft and others want more use out of the systems this generation than last gens.
I think Office for the Mac was great. It showed that though they hate Apple, they hate losing money even more. I guess it's a big win for Mac users and for Microsoft as they don't have much competition in the Mac space on office products.
If they want to go against violence in video games, they are going to have to go against violence in all forms of media. You can't just censor one form of free speech and not do that for all areas. Pornography in censored in tapes, tv, magazines and other means so that kids can't get to it. If you want the same effect on violence you will have to censor movies, tv, and violence in books and magazines to have a chance to censor video games and I doubt that people will allow that to happen. And with countless cases of game law being found unconstitutional, I guess my point is right.
At the serious game summit at GDC, there were a lot of studies that showed that if you use games as suplimental teaching tools and that you gave the teacher learning material on how to use the games in class, that it worked great.
One example is Roller Coaster Tycoon. You could just let the kids play it, but if you give the teachers the right instruction to help the kids and give lessons that support what was learned, then the kids get it. Just putting a kid in front of the game fails. This was the consensus from many of the games talked about at the conference. If you want to read more about this, go to...
I seriously doubt that Blizzard would announce anything until they know WoW is starting to drop interest. They rather you pay every month for the same game than have you pay once for Diablo and Starcraft.
