More pixel counting: Haze runs at 576p
May 19th 2008 7:57PM (Joystiq Playstation)Resolution vs. FPS has always been the PC gamers' debate. Judging a game on it's resolution or how many fps alone is not only asinine, but counter productive. HAZE does run at 720p and 1080i/p, but is being rendered at a lower resolution. Considering that the game was a multiplatform game, and that the developers have been having some problems, I am not surprised by this development. It's unfortunate that it's not running at a higher frame-rate though - action games benefit from higher frame-rates by being more responsive to player inputs. Imho, it's the post-processing of partial renders which gave FR so much trouble. The nectar effects, while nifty, is probably being done too inefficiently for the PS3's architecture. If any of you can remember how K2 is being coded, you can see why all the post partial renders could be doing that. When it comes to games in general, the more action oriented the game, the more FPS you want. Does a puzzle based point and click adventure need 120fps? No. Instead, most devs would up the resolution to compensate, so the game would look fantastic. Does a fast-paced duel-joystick shooter benefit from incredibly high resolutions? No. It benefits more from a higher frame rate since input responsiveness increases. In short, the argument always depends on the game. HAZE being a shooter, would benefit from a higher resolution if it was a slow paced shooter. Otherwise, fps would be more beneficial. Being that Free Radical is a 3rd party developer, one whose experiences are not from the Playstation alone, shouldn't surprise anyone that this game does neither well. Blaming Sony for this is like blaming McDonalds for a long, slow line at the drive-thru. Sure, it's their drive-thru but they can't control the people coming into it directly unless those people were employed by McDonalds itself. Blame Sony if Killzone 2 has this problem. They can control that development. They didn't control this one's.
