Microsoft doesn't even know the true failure rate. Not every person who's xbox dies sends it to microsoft. Some have simply purchased a new one if it was past the warranty coverage. Others have purchased warrantys with the store they bought it from. These companies repair the xbox and sell them as refurbished.
I work in the industry and can say that the failure rate of systems purchased within the first few months is very high. Out of the people I know, it's probably up as high as 60%. Some are on their 3rd or 4th system. I am on my second.
