Watch: THQ Montreal studio announcement and press conference

Oct 21st 2010 12:20PM (Joystiq)
@oSiDo Not really. The law only allows you to send your kids to school if their siblings or parents attended an English school. He should contact the Montreal English School Board though because if the child has already started his schooling in English in another province there might be a legitimate case to be made for his continuing education in English. The alternative is to simply sign the child up for private schooling which is unrestricted by language issues.

Review: Red Dead Redemption (single-player)

And I quote:

"I realize that I'm not even close to being a litterary genius and therefore my perspective on the matter should be taken with a grain of salt"

I've already covered that. In the previous sentence. If you're not going to bother to read the comment don't bother replying to it.

Review: Red Dead Redemption (single-player)

May 21st 2010 2:49PM (Joystiq)
I want to be clear that I'm not knocking the author with respect to his views on RDR as many of them echo my own but the review proper reads somewhat like a high school paper with the same lack of flow, clumsiness and the occasional argumental contradictions you'd expect from someone at that level.

It's not that I expect Joystiq to win pullitzers and this isn't the first poorly written review that I've had the misfortune of reading on this site or any other but given the quality of the regular news posts this particular review sticks out like a sore thumb. I realize that I'm not even close to being a litterary genius and therefore my perspective on the matter should be taken with a grain of salt. I do however think that it's pretty easy to intuitively tell the difference between a well written and not so well written article and sadly this falls in the latter category.

Analysts discuss impact of EA Sports Online Pass

May 13th 2010 9:50AM (Joystiq)
That's just plain stupid. When you purchase the game originally you are paying for the online component as well. When you sell the game you are passing that privilege over to the other player. You yourself are no longer going to be using the online component and the as far as the server is concerned it really doesn't matter if it's you or someone else. A connection is a connection and the costs have already been defrayed, it's not like you're adding ANOTHER connection in there.
If EA is really that worried about server costs they could do a number of things including making online entirely P2P and allowing players to set up their own servers. Bottom line, while I understand why EA is doing this it has nothing to do with offsetting network infrastructure costs and everything to do with punishing individuals who purchase used games and companies who profit from that market.

Write a self aware AI, call it Skynet and wait for the bombs to fall. And eat poutines since I'm in Quebec and don't qualify because my government hates me.

Street Fighter IV coming to iPhone ... why are you laughing?

Feb 15th 2010 4:29PM (Joystiq)
I remember the GBA ports of both Alpha 3 and Super Turbo controlling horribly and this is on a system with actual buttons! Well, only 4 of them, but still, at least you had a d-pad.
IV has some really unforgiving timings and some rather complex motions (minus all the stupid stuff like instant magic reversals on crossup, totally lack of meaty game and the weird input shortcuts) so in terms of execution it's on par with the above two titles.
That makes a port on a system with only touch controls something of an odd choice. It's obvious that nobody is going to take this game seriously and it's not going to be used in any competitive way but I also see this as being more frustrating than fun to play... they're going to have to seriously scale down the game to something that isn't even remotely execution heavy.

Kojima website updates with countdown and mysterious '5'

It could be castlevania 5 (super castlevania IV was the last numbered game in the series) or it could be contra 5...

or maybe we're really really really really lucky and it's actually an S for snatcher!
yeah, right...

With all due respect whether the laws are outdated or not is of concern to no one outside of Quebec. You may not like the laws themselves (and I personally don't) but they are in place for a good reason and are largely approved by the Quebecois population(Montreal Gazette non-wistanding).

As for aaaarrg or whatever: your logic is completely lacking. On the one hand you're saying that the majority rule should operate yet you're saying the Francophone majority in Quebec have no right to stand up for themselves. You realize these laws apply only in Quebec where the vast majority of people are Francophone, right? And you seemingly know nothing of how the law operates if you think it infringes on anyone's freedoms... educate yourself first.
