Final Fantasy XI did cross platform over 3 platforms. PC, PS2, and 360. And you can also load up the game on PS3. So I don't see why this isn't possible as long as you have a central server that all the different platforms are connecting to and can understand and relay the information correctly.
But I think Capcom is thinking about player hosted games, not dedicated servers. Then the problem becomes stickier.
With the popularity of the Wii here in NA, I hope Monster Hunter 3 doesn't flop like all previous ones.
Gamespot even gave Monster Hunter Freedom 2 a 5.0. It's one of the funnest games I've played on any system in a while. Definitely deserves better than a 5.0. Multiplayer is such a blast. Though it might be a pain on Wii with the friend codes.
Worse case scenario: it's a 3D version of Children of Mana. From the sounds of things, this might be the case. Hopefully there'll be more variety to it. I kind of enjoyed the GC FFCC, but my friends hated it and found it really boring.
Think of it this way. Eventually games will get big enough to come on multiple BD discs. What then in this case? Will it still be ok if a game came on 6 or more DVD9 discs? At what point is it too many discs?
We we all happy back in the day when a game would come on 12 floppy discs? There reaches a point when there's just too much stuff to have laying around.
It's not like you are being forced to buy 3rd party devices. Whenever I go to the gamestore, there are plenty of first party controllers and such, except for when the Wii first came out and it was impossible to buy any accessories.
But any informed gamer will know to stay clear of those crummy 3rd party accessories, unless you really want a controller with turbo buttons and such. More choice is more good, even if 1 option is clearly superior.
