Kinect video chat will work with Windows Live Messenger at launch

Nov 5th 2010 11:38AM (Joystiq)
@TRACE i agree and as i was just telling my friend, the yearly cost for xbox live gold is totally worth it...and its also why i bought a new console when i got a red ring of death...because it was worth it for me to take the opportunity and upgrade to an elite console and spread the love by giving my brother the repaired one. when a console pulls off that (and i'm not the only one) then it's pretty damn good. i dont rush out to buy every game. so the way i see it, if i get 1 or 2 games a year....the gold subscription is just another game for the year. no big deal. though i do wish it was free or cheaper. who doesn't? maybe it will be...with technology everything gets cheaper over time.

@Crayola Q Pants ESQ Actually....Someone SHOULD make porn games for it. They already made 3D porn...So why not? It could completely tell when you're "doing things" ... Just sayin' ... maybe you could get filthy rich off the Kinect, don't knock it.

Microsoft predicts 5m Kinect units sold this Xmas (more than the Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii launches)

@jmr1986 people will buy those games PLUS the Kinect. Umm, I am (I didn't think I would be, but I am).

I'm really surprised to see all these people who are in denial...Guess what? The Kinect is sold out.

It's also fun as hell. I'm really into my Modern Warfare, but for just a fun time with some company over...Hell yes. Hell yes. No, I don't dance or sing or play rock band, but there's some other games out there that are fun. Kinect blows away the Wii and Move. It's light years ahead. I really think they might actually hit their sales predictions...

@sboardr22 I agree and also don't forget this is also why birth control was invented.

Jolicloud pre-beta now ready for download, and I love it

Dec 31st 2009 3:19PM (Download Squad)
Didn't really play with the alpha when I got the invite, after learning more about it I thought it was a little silly - trying to make your OS "social" and I still do. I really don't care what other people are installing. That's extremely worthless information.

However, if Jolicloud is a small and fast loading, fast performing distro variant of Ubuntu, that's great! I would absolutely use it if it's optimized for speed.

Funny enough, I do develop for the web on my netbook. It's not just for music, video, web, and e-mail. The small screen isn't so bad, I mean I'm used to it and on the HP Mini 1000, the keyboard is ample size for typing. I use Crunchbang linux, which is a slim Ubuntu distro. GREAT battery life with the distro. Which I shouldn't say is so great with the HP Mini, that's the one downside of it. So I really appreciate anything to give the HP Mini more life short of an awkward battery that's oozing with radiation.

That said. I can't really use Chrome OS right? I mean I need to be able to install specific software. SVN, gEdit, etc. Jolicloud lets me do that? Runs fast? PERFECT.

However, I'd also take another look at Moblin. The alpha of Moblin didn't work so well on my HP Mini. However it's at "2.1 final" now...And...It's supposed to boot EXTREMELY fast. They were aiming for 2 seconds. That's faster than Chrome OS. Are they there yet? I don't know...

But I would like to see a review on Moblin here too.

Survey finds Xbox 360 is played five times as often as Wii, five times more likely to fail than PS3

Yea well, when you try to modify and steal games that's what happens, you get a broken console.
While that may not be a true statement neither are these fraking numbers. It's like the same research companies that research cell phones and such? Seriously?? I mean where are these studies from?! Engadget is gonna look like Fox news if they keep spitting out crap...It makes them look like they favor certain brands and sway consumers.

If the failure rate was 30% .... anywhere near... The company would do a mass recall.
Fairly common procedure...and you sure as hell know that Microsoft has the money to do it.
What? You think they can't fix their problem and afford to replace all those consoles?? The company that got sued millions of dollars a day and just sat there like nothing was going on... Yea...

My friends, family, etc. between all of us own all three consoles. I love and play them all.
I personally have an Xbox 360. You can't beat it's online community, crying about $60/yr is useless. It's worth the small charge for what you get. PS3's online is free cuz you don't get anything with it.

I'm not a hater, I just love Xbox and totally hate it when reports come out that shine my very good, long deliberated, decisions in a bad light. Especially when the claims are so ridiculous that there'd be no way I wouldn't have a broken device. Know which devices of mine did break? That POS Sony Vaio (from 6 years ago). I still buy Sony stuff (just with caution).

Palm Pre, iPhone 3GS owners' satisfaction polled, compared in new study

Aug 15th 2009 3:46PM (Engadget)
For the love of God... Can Sprint stores, reviewers, studies, surveys, people, etc. point out that the Palm Pre app store isn't officially open yet??? It always gets slammed for it's lack of apps, but that's because you can't submit an app yet! (only a few early access companies and the app must be free for now).

I think the fact that they have a delayed launch on their app store is really hurting the Pre. I think that's the number 1 reason why it isn't as successful as it could be. When you come out with an "iphone killer" or something that's supposed to be better or whatever. Even comparable (and it is). You aren't talking just hardware but also the software.

So the gripes that people have about the Pre from these reports means almost zero. We'll have to see what the studies are after the app store is in full swing. It's almost a waste of energy to do any kind of study on something that isn't really out there yet.

Hey you know, I think the Omnia2 is also awesome and I'm pretty happy with it. Let's do a study on that one...it doesn't matter that the phone itself hasn't even come out yet.

I will personally attest to a short battery life on my Palm Pre. I probably didn't charge it properly the first time. However. I can go buy another battery or two or three...And I can get an extended battery. Can't do that with an iPhone. Oh and the touchstone is pretty cool too.

I just laugh at reports because they have no place right now. Maybe if someone ran a report on "How happy are you with Palm's decision to delay the app store?" Or "Are you excited about the upcoming app store for the Palm Pre? How have the apps been so far?"

I can say that already the Pre has better apps than the iPhone...and that's what? A dozen? I know, when the app store laucnhes there'll be hundreds of junk apps too just like the iPhone...but you know what? They are off to a great start with Pandora and their Navigator. Turn by turn voice directions just like a real GPS. It works great. Would've made my recent drive far easier ... but at the time I just had an iPhone with Google maps which is fine...but not when you have to drive and read!
