Probably using different codecs. You can compare hardware-acceleration vs. software-acceleration by playing an H.264 video in VLC and QuickTime X at the same time and see which one uses more CPU.
And in regards to your point about Apple pushing proprietary formats, the only closed-source format Apple is behind is H.264 (which wasn't even created by them). The rest are all open-source (HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript).
Flash, on the other hand, is controlled by Adobe alone.
I hate Flash's performance on the Mac and that's why I support Apple's stance in this case, but if Adobe proves Apple wrong, then I'll be more than happy to bug Apple to re-consider.
7500 kbps only gives you about 750KB/s download, which is exactly what the author posted.
But yeah, compared to other countries, NZ's internet service is poor to say the least. Back in Brazil, that same US$100 got me 8Mb/s uncapped traffic on cable, plus the premium TV package with multi-room (4 points).
The problem, as someone already posted before, is the lack of investments on infrastructure until recently.
I definitely enjoy (yes, enjoy) leveling from 1. I haven't even gotten any chars to 80 (my main is 63 at the moment), but you can't say there isn't fun in leveling those first levels of a new char.
Maybe creating an alternative path to those wanting to start from a higher level? Not using R-A-F, but like the did with DKs.
Twitterrific just sucks. No way to type all the text first and then be able to shorten it, no way to shorten a URL before you actually type in the text, no way to search.
To be honest, the best one I've found so far is DestroyTwitter with its concept of canvases.
