Detoc: Rocksmith reviews show 'lack of enthusiasm' for innovation

Nov 1st 2011 11:22AM (Joystiq)
Well, joystiq, I don't know about all that but I'm a novice guitarist and really like it. Maybe it's just not the sort of thing you're interested in?

Xperia Play's launch games captured on video

Feb 14th 2011 12:52AM (Joystiq)
@ddealss One could easily make the argument that casual games are most popular on phones simply because that's all they're really capable of. On both the NDS and PSP, longer form games are quite popular. There's no reason to believe that people wouldn't play those games on their phone if it was capable of it.

Ultimately, I think this is where the market is going; an all in one device that can perform all the jobs of any handheld, including games. Where the touch screen has proven itself to be quite capable of completely replacing a physical keyboard, the exact opposite has been true of game controls. Some types of games simply require physical controls. I fail to see how making a device that can accomplish that while running a common OS can be anything but a good thing. My only questions so far is that reports about the analog touchpads isn't very encouraging, what the price point will be and when I can have it on not-Verizon.

Xperia Play battery life supports gaming for 5+ hours, and other specs

Feb 14th 2011 12:41AM (Joystiq)
@mcnerven Yeah, very excited but waiting to see if it makes the move to Sprint as well. I switched to Sprint from Verizon 3 years ago and don't want to go back. It doesn't look like it will support 4G but I've been pretty disappointed with Sprint's WiMax network anyway (poor building penetration in my experience).

I'm genuinely excited for this thing. If it could handle some form of video out (perhaps through DLNA), this could be the first complete all-in-one handheld where complete means it can perform all of the functions of any handheld device and act as a low power pc or console.

Add the big dose of money OnLive just got from HTC for phone development and this has huge potential. I have an OnLive micro console and, while it admittedly needs some control tweaks and a much more robust library, it's pretty impressive. $99 plus a free $50 game made it worth the experiment.

I should have it because all my friends would literally murder me out of envy and I am a very bad person.

How would you change HTC's EVO 4G?

Jul 24th 2010 12:55AM (Engadget)
As an actual, happy EVO owner, the only thing I'd change is the capacitive buttons at the bottom. They're to easy to hit by accident. Every other function is at least adequate and most are brilliant.

As to battery life, don't believe everything you read. No, it can't go 24 hours doing everything but what phone this capable can? And at least I can use a spare battery. However, mine get's me through a day with normal use just fine. The big thing that effects battery life is the GPS unit if you leave it on. Fortunately, there is no reason to leave it on all the time; only turn it on as needed.

I'm not going to talk down anyone's phone choice but I'm quite pleased with my EVO.

iPad pre-orders estimated at over 150,000 -- possibly ahead of iPhone rate

Mar 15th 2010 11:00AM (Engadget)
@JAbreu As a distinctly non-Apple fanboy I agree with you in general. I'm not even 100% certain I won't pick one of these up eventually (although not in it's initial form).

On the other hand, I'm not convinced the numbers mean this will surpass the the iPhone in initial sales. The main thing that the iPhone has in it's favor is need. Harping about "food, water and shelter" aside, you need a phone. You also need a computer of some sort. The iPhone fills the first category nicely and even a cheap netbook can fill the second for most people. The iPad, like most tablets, fills that weird "companion device" category. From my perspective it's a bit oversized and, maybe, a bit underpowered for the job. Apple is banking on simplicity of design and a pre-existing app catalog over extensive features and low price. It's a bet that has worked for them in the past but I think it made more sense at the phone level than at this in between space.

On the other hand, I'm also convinced there is a place for iPads and Couriers; they are different, valid philosophies.

Microsoft's Courier 'digital journal': exclusive pictures and details (update: video!)

Mar 5th 2010 5:46PM (Engadget)
@taciturnforsale Agreed, at at least 256 levels of sensitivy (Wacom enabled Tablet PC quality). To do what it's showing on the videos it would really have to be. Won't know until it's an actual product however.
