Overheard: polite clapping for Nintendo is quite enough, fanboys

May 18th 2006 11:17PM (Joystiq)
Vlad, surely you're not insinuating that a member of the press with opinions regarding a certain subject cannot remain impartial when reporting on news pertaining to that subject? Just because a member of the gaming press becomes enthusiastic in regards to what is likely his or her hobby does not mean that those same journalists are certain to subversively skew their report with respect to those who enthused them the most. Conversely, just because the guy sitting to your right didn't whoop and holler at the revelation of Yoshi's Island 2 does not mean that he's free of all journalistic bias.

A professional journalist (emphasis on professional) can retain personal opinions while simultaneously presenting topics impartially. Do you think the guys at ESPN don't root for their favorite teams in the NFL playoffs? Do you honestly believe that none of them have ever gone to a football game bare-chested, emblazoned with paint in their team's colors? Yet I don't see Dan Marino, a Pittsburgh native, belittling the Cleveland Browns or Oakland Raiders merely because they're the rivals of his home team. But back when he was the first-string quarterback at Pitt, do you think he didn't support the Steelers from the bottom of his heart, like he had been raised to do?

Furthermore, reports on war are not the best analogy in this situation. While it's absolutely shameful that supposed professionals would allow their enthusiasm to leak into their reporting, the nature of war is generally serious. Life and death hang in the balance, and reporters remain solemn in order to convey reverence towards those who put themselves at risk for the sake of their country. Video games, on the other hand, are rarely so somber. I believe that the reason that video game journalists have never won a pulitzer is because we're having too much fun to give a damn.

Wii TV sensor image surfaces

Sgtpepper, as far as I understand it doesn't matter where you put the bar, so long as it remains in the same place from the time you turn on the console 'til the time you're done. Of course, realistically the bluetooth range is finite, and the bar connects to the Wii via a cord, so you couldn't place the bar just anywhere, for instance the closet, or Minnesota.

Anyway, the bar is just there so that the remote has a consistent point of reference. As long as you calibrate it properly every time you move it from one place to another, it shouldn't matter where you put it. Of course, I'm no Nintengineer, so I could be wrong.

The real PlayStation 3 controller revealed

Sorry Momus, but Kirby is the only gal I'll ever love. That is, assuming that Kirby is, in fact, female. Regardless, I can think of several ways to put that kind of suction to good use. Keeping my kitchen floor spotless, for instance.

Also, blowjobs.

By the way, Commenter #81, a.k.a. I HATE SONY, I'm the host of a very famous syndicated cable TV talk show, and I'm loving your style. Will you be in the Los Angeles area anytime this week? Also, blowjobs?

The real PlayStation 3 controller revealed

Can I just say it? Sony, listen. The dualshock is terrible. It was never a good idea. Just because it looks symmetrical does not mean it is a good design.

Now... Sony? SONY! You look at me, young man. Don't you roll your eyes at me! It's 2006! You haven't changed your fucking controller in over a decade! Those buttons with analog sensitivity on the PS2? Nobody used those. Ever. The people who say they used those? Liars, all of them. It doesn't look good for these motion sensors, either.

GIVE ME THE BOOMERANG, SONY. IT'S BETTER THAN THE LOG OF SHIT YOU'VE HAD HANGING FROM YOUR ASS FOR THE PAST TWELVE YEARS. Now go to your room! No! No dinner for you, little man! Go!

Also, since when did Robert DeNiro shave his head and become a bodyguard for G4?

Yuji Naka confirmed to be leaving Sega to form Prope

While it may have Latin roots, at first glance the name reminds me of "prole" (the shortened form of "proletariat"), which, outside of Marxism, is usually used in a derogatory sense. I'd like to think that a lot more people have read "1984" than have had extensive instruction in Latin.

Xbox 360 HD DVD via USB, confirmed

May 8th 2006 4:12PM (Joystiq)
Ozymandias, the reason that Blu-Ray can only store half the video that HD-DVD can is because the DRM takes up no less than 38GBs of disc space. It's an unprecedented level of security, and will undoubtedly take software pirates several dozen lunch breaks to crack it.

Also, according to Toshiba, that handy HD-DVD player doubles as a bottle opener, lawnmower, pneumatic drill, vacuums your house, can do your taxes, and makes a mean espresso, while your fiendish Blu-Ray player will devour your children and housepets while you sleep.

Look on my works, ye Sony, and despair.

I don't understand the double standard. So guys can take off their shirts in public, whereas women can't? Where's the logic in that kind of sexual discrimination? Aesthetically, a fat man's tits are no different than a woman's, though perhaps slightly hairier.

ZOMG TEH NIPELS! *FAPFAPFAP*

Enough is enough. Either men shouldn't be allowed to expose their chests in public or women should. Either draw the line or erase it. Enough of this pansy bullshit.

Free expression isn't always a good thing

May 2nd 2006 9:26PM (Joystiq)
Bravo, Disposable Hero.

An integral component of freedom of speech is accepting responsibility for your words and actions. Preventing people from expressing their beliefs will not give you an opportunity to change and influence those beliefs. Restrictions on freedom of expression ultimately serve only to allow the populace to fester in their own ignorance.

For the record, ignorance is a bad thing. Any attempts to disprove this will be met with laughter and disdain.

If you believe in the ideals of Hitler and the Nazis, then by all means make your logo a swastika. Likewise, if you are a devout Jainist, to whom the swastika is equivalent to the Christian Holy Cross, then feel free to do the same. However, Jainists should be prepard to explain that they don't advocate racial cleansing, just as Nazis should be prepared to defend their own lifestyle decisions. Who are we to judge?

GameCube price drop: Nintendo preps retailer [update 1]

May 2nd 2006 1:18AM (Joystiq)
Metroid Prime not developed by Nintendo? Retro and NST are both first party studios, dude. Saying Prime wasn't developed by Nintendo is like saying Smash Bros. wasn't developed by Nintendo because it was made by HAL.

Not your average Nintendo-themed title? The game was entirely reimagined from scratch after Miyamoto got his hands on the initial build. That's the same guy who brought us such crappy and childish franchises as Mario, Zelda, Star Fox, and F-Zero.

Hardcore gamers play to have fun, not to look cool. Stop worrying that the other children will make fun of you and just enjoy yourself for a change.
