Wii tie ratio 8:1 in December, still trailing life-to-date
Jan 25th 2008 9:55AM (Joystiq)It was a problem.....till it passed the PS3. But now if you look above it doesnt count cuz of wii play. Which I still play with my brother and my nephews.
@ JJ
Now being that it has passed the PS3 and its cheaper, should we really be worry about the wii, or the ps3???
Will Wright reckons Wii is the only 'next-gen' system
Oct 27th 2007 3:47PM (Joystiq)"back then it wasn't the hardware, it was the games out, something which the Wii hasn't shown yet, and its selling like hotcakes, which shows that the Wii is just been bought of pure hype..."
So lemme get this straight, back then it was about games and now its about hardware? Why arent we all out buying quadcore's and dual 8800gt's then?
Please tell me wat game came out in the ps2's first year that helped to sell 120 million???
You people like to compare the 7yrs of the ps2 to the 1st yr of the wii, but then align the first yr of the 360 with the 1st yr of the ps3. Not very fair..........
Lets look at the 1st yrs sales numbers of these systems. (Note that these are rough estimates)
Wii - > 10mil
X360 - < 10mil
PS3 - < 10mil
PS2 - 10mil (greater than or less than doesnt really matter)
Interestin when you line them up...........
You also said people are buyin the wii on pure hype, isnt that the same as "POTENTIAL"? (keyword for the ps3)
June NPD: Nintendo WiiDS out competition, industry sales grow 31%
Jul 24th 2007 4:07PM (Joystiq)You remind me of someone else who was on here a month or so ago and claimed that he was in gaming for long and because of that he was able to judge quality. My question is how do you judge quality?
Is it how many polygons on screen at once??? Or the draw distance??? Also let me put a spin on it
I dont really care for FF, I tried 7 and found it boring with nothing but cgi. I also dont like when the cutscenes look better than in game graphics. Does that mean FF is not quality? or is it sh!t? Should I be upset that they are hitting unlucky number 13? Is that not the same game since the nes with better graphics???
Is any game out now so different from the games that were on the nes?
You wrote all that stuff but essentially said nothing
Think daylight saving time saves energy? Think again. Or not.
Mar 12th 2007 8:55AM (Autoblog Green)Analyst: Wii could plague 30% of U.S. homes
Feb 23rd 2007 9:18AM (Joystiq)People are mad at nintendo cuz of this software drought but I think its an excellent idea. Its kind of like the movie "The Core", where they let off the nukes at different pts just to keep to flow going.
As much as you people talk mario is the system seller. I cannot wait to see the sales numbers once they drop those bombs.
Note to Sony and Microsoft: Nintendo is your competition
Jan 24th 2007 10:48AM (Joystiq)"Graphics matter and hd tvs are dropping in price MASSIVELY. I bought my 32' hd tv for 999.99 6-7 months ago. Now they are selling my same hd tv with better response times for 599.99. By next christmas that same 32' hd tv will be out for 399.99. By then everyone will have large hd lcd's in their house and the "not everyone can afford an hd tv" point will be moot."
I have to disagree. Ill give two examples. My brother, currently had an xbox1 and a psp. Had the ds but hated it cuz of graphics. He has a infocus projector and harmon kardon 7.1 surround sound system in the living room. Watches DVDs for now, but I am building him a computer so that he can get into hi def properly. Hes played GOW on the 360 and loved it. He hates the wii because he doesnt believe in anything less than 720p and it has no optical out.He sold his xbox and psp to get a 360. Do you know what he plays now? POKEMON on an emulator in his pocket pc. explain that.
Ill use me next. I just bought a 23in widescreen hi def tv. Have it hooked up to my computer. Downloaded some hi def movies and am in love with hi def. Still own a gamecube. 480p is good enough for me. To me the 360/PS3 looks good, but thats about it. I would still rather play a round of N64 perfect dark with some friends in all its svideo glory on a 100ft screen than most of the stuff thats out there.
Note to Sony and Microsoft: Nintendo is your competition
Jan 24th 2007 10:29AM (Joystiq)"To me the real innovation here is Nintendo's ability to sell a concept to the consumer. Start where we are now and reverse engineer it to the conceptual stage. Nintendo has taken their market strengths, run them through the dreaded iPod-ulator and applied them to break out of the video game hardware business model. It's no secret that Nintendo fans are among the most loyal in the industry and, to me, Nintendo has used this to move into a for-profit 'less for more' business model for hardware."
You do realize that that has been the business model for a while don't you. Do you think that the ps2/xbox/cube has been maxxed out yet??? No, there are plenty of things they can do to squeeze more juice out of it. Which is why the graphics get better over time.
"Just because the control scheme is different does not mean it is advantageous yet this is exactly the concept that Nintendo has managed to sell its loyal consumers and in a big way. They are managing to sell a piece of hardware that is quite comparable technically to it's previous offering based on a new controller and they are doing it at a significant profit to boot. I would have, in fact, expected the cost of games to decrease under this model since they wouldn't need to recoup monies lost on hardware and companies would not have to go through development teething pains for more complex hardware but this isn't the case. It's now a business model built on the profit of hardware, peripherals and games. It's a rather brilliant and crafty piece of marketing that is sure to put a wad in Nintendo's pocket that I have to admire from the outside but wholeheartedly do not buy into."
Doesnt that apply to the other systems as well. MS/Sony has managed to sell an expensive piece of hardware to its customers while their previous offerings were good enough. Now sure you can say that there is more power, but is God of War 2 going to sell poorly because its on a previous system, I think not. Also if none of these systems were annouced, we would all be fine with what we had.
"I do have to conceed that Wii tennis is more complex than 'pong but pretty' but when compared to the likes of top spin, virtua tennis or even rockstar's table tennis gameplay mechanics, it is not much more than just that. The Nintendo argument, I believe, is that swinging a 4" rectangular piece of plastic standing 6 feet from the tv in your living room is somehow more 'immersive'. I disagree. I would also argue that if that is exactly what you are going for then for $50 you could buy a real raquet and actually take up the sport. Let's be truthful here, it's a video game, your videogame swing is clumsy and awkward and in no way resembles the skill required for the real life game of tennis."
Once again this can apply to other systems. What do you mean by mechanics? Do you mean depth? or the fact that you press a button to swing? or how about the graphics. I can use the same argument as you. Why do you need to see each individual piece of grass moving in a game when you can go outside and actually look at grass? Why do I have to see them blink? I can look in the mirror to see blinking. You do realize that that is where graphics are heading, real life. If thats the case whats the point, real life is outside waiting for you and it doesnt need a 3.2ghz cpu or a 512mb video card.
Wii production exceeding expectations
Oct 6th 2006 10:07AM (Joystiq)"This is my favorite line of the whole thread of comments. Unless you own stock in Nintendo, it sounds as if you are actually happy Nintendo is selling you the console at a premium. As a consumer, shouldn't you want the lowest price possible? Let Nintendo take losses on the console if it saves you 50-100 bucks...it almost feels like Nintendo is short changing everyone when they are making profits on *somewhat* dated tech (i know i know, it's INOVATIVE...), while Microsoft and Sony are throwing money out the window to get you technologically superior machines."
Based on wat ur saying we shouldnt be buy the ps3 for 600. its using a 2yr old video card. And both the 360 and PS3 dont support directx 10. So y bother with any system???
So far the only thing thats "new tech" is the controller, which is wat any smart person should be excited about. If we really cared about grafix that street fighter on xbox live wouldnt be popular now would it???
@139 ouch
"Compared to the 360, the Wii's state isn't bright- at all. The little cheap machine won't profit devs because casual games don't have a big intake of games. 40/50 bucks for a semi-neu-gen game doesn't get the point when production values are the SAME as last gen (think EA Sports-PC) content and the controller addon ramps the price up."
You do realize that the dev costs for the 360 have gone up compared to the xbox. I dont get ur logic. Why would a dev put money into a "next generation" system that has been out a yr and still cant match sales of the old generation. Why would a dev makes games for the ps3 when there wont be any this holiday season???
500,000 vs 2 mil (atleast)........price to make a ps3(or 360) game > price to make a wii game?????
You tell me
It's all about the games. Yes quantity, but quality? Lots of Ubisoft rehashed crap, SM Galaxy not launching, and the ridiculous premise of some games *coughkiddycough* like Excite Truck and GT Pro definately WON'T sell in holiday seasons.
Have you looked at some of the games that are out for the other systems??? Ridge racer 7?????? I dont thnk any game should reach 7. resistance fall of man..........wats it bring to the table that hasnt been done???
If you wii haters wanna talk about rehashes please clean up ur own backyards first. Its amazing the hate that follows nintendo. if sony was to actually make an affordable system, the world would rejoice.
Sony: Nintendo is losing audience, not expanding it
Sep 22nd 2006 11:07PM (Joystiq)"Don't overlook the simple fact that the PSP has buried the GameBoy of which was a strong brand name.
Also of note is that many of the DS'ers have bought the system twice, so their percieved market share isn't all it's cracked up to be."
SInce when did the psp even touch the gb name. watever.
Also of that 100,000 ps2's sold how many we repeat buyers??? I guess the ps2's market share isnt that great either huh????
Joystiq hands-on: Coded Arms Assault (PS3)
Sep 22nd 2006 11:27AM (Joystiq)"It's funny to see the Nintendophiles bashing the single analog FPS when their previous N64 Goldeneye and Perfect Dark still stand as the highest rated titles to date in this genre."
Dont bring that bull here. You know that nub and the analog stick on the 64 are different.
