Hearst and Apple come to terms on subscriptions

May 4th 2011 10:48PM (TUAW.com)
Yes, I remember when you last wrote about magazine pricing on the iPad. You gave the strong impression that you didn't know what you were talking about at the time. There is nothing "baffling" about magazine's charging more for individual issues than a subscriber would pay per issue. That is how periodicals have always been sold. Are you baffled that a smaller bottle of Tide costs more per fluid ounce than a larger bottle? Are you unfamiliar with the concept of volume pricing? Is $5 too much for one issue of Esquire. Possibly, but not because subscribing will cost a reader less per issue. And, for what it's worth, not everyone knows that magazine make most of their money from advertising--as you wrote in your last post on this subject. Some magazines do. But increasingly they do not. Smaller niche magazines, like the New Republic, rely on subscription revenue--and some magazines have moved to a nonprofit model that merges subscription revenue with donations in order stay in the black.

Is Apple too slow on delivering bumpers and cases?

Jul 26th 2010 11:30AM (TUAW.com)
That's the point, friend. You have 30 days to return the phone without having to pay a restocking fee, but the case that addresses the design flaw (and it is a design flaw), won't arrive until after that period. So, yes, obviously Apple is taking too long. It's not a question of entitlement when you pay two or three hundred dollars for a device that shouldn't require an accessory to work right. I'm not bashing Apple. My iPhone 4 order is in. But I live in New York. We have good coverage. I was recently in Chicago, where the coverage was terrible. I have two friends there whose iPhone 4s aren't performing well. And I can confirm that my 3GS recently had trouble hanging on to a signal in much of Chicago for the better part of a week.

This is a legit post on a good blog. You people sound like members of a cult, not informed consumers.

Is Apple too slow on delivering bumpers and cases?

The problem, Apple acolytes, is that the stated delivery time exceeds the 30-day window Jobs opened for unsatisfied customers to return their iPhones without a restocking penalty. TUAW has nothing to apologize for. This is a blog, not the front page of the New York Times.

Dear Microsoft: How was Apple able to secure rights to sell Trek as a digital download in HD but you were not? Why does the Zune marketplace only offer the film in standard definition?

What is the deal with Star Trek in the Zune Marketplace being available only in standard def? iTunes offers it in HD.
