August NPD: 185k PS3s sold, high attach rates for Madden 09 and SCIV

Sep 12th 2008 10:24AM (Joystiq Playstation)
This is good news. The PS3 doesn't need to beat the 360 in sales each month, it just needs to maintain solid growth and not lag too far behind. Since catching up in the short term is a near-impossible task, they need to just keep their eye on the prize of long-term success.

LittleBigPlanet pre-order bonuses are terrifyingly awesome

"..as well as a level editor, which is playable online with up to three of your friends.."

The level editor supports 4p local as well, right? Right? I have been looking forward to building levels with my wife, so I hope so.

John Carmack says Blu-ray offers better graphics

Aug 1st 2008 4:49PM (Joystiq Playstation)
To NahWorry: I'll be the first to admit that id hasn't produced a new, exciting game since Quake 2, but that's no fault of Carmack's, per se. He develops the technologies used in their games, but does not design the games themselves. As the CEO of id Software, I'm sure he has a final say on each game's design, but he's no designer.

Carmack has been responsible for some of the greatest technological advancements in gaming, and continues to innovate to this day. His contributions pioneered most of the techniques used in game development today. Without him, we'd never have Half-Life, Call of Duty, Unreal, etc.

I would trust his opinion on which games were fun to play, but I sure listen when he talks about the hardware and technology behind them.

John Carmack says Blu-ray offers better graphics

Ouch. But if you read the entire interview here:
http://kotaku.com/5031985/rage-and-ids-lovehate-relationship-with-the-ps3

His stance on the PS3 overall is pretty negative. He claims that the PS3's architecture is inferior to the 360, and the only reason why it would look better on the PS3 is due to the texture compression needed to fit the game on multiple discs. He seems to think that the only thing preventing the 360 from being the best is the disc medium.

Either way, it's a win for the PS3 I guess. But Carmack is probably one of the most, if not the most, gifted developers to date. His words sting a little.

PS3 firmware version 2.10 coming tomorrow - includes DivX support

Dec 17th 2007 12:13PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Ugh. The DivX support is kinda gimped. No media over 2gb, and 3.1 and earlier is not supported. Also, there's no Xvid support.

The 360 has no 2gb limit on their DivX support and also supports Xvid. They only support DivX 5.0 or later, though.

Having a large downloaded anime collection, I prefer the Xvid support.

Analysts continue optimistic predictions, PS3 to meet Wii sales in 2011

Nice generalization there! How about this one: "Traditionally, Playstation owners are more arrogant and like to make stupid, holier-than-thou remarks on the internet.."

This game looked more interesting before they completely re-designed it to look like every other popular action game that's come out in the past few years..

Metal Gear Solid 4 needs a million sold on day one

Nov 29th 2007 3:47PM (Joystiq Playstation)
The "sell 1 million on the first day" expectation isn't quite as nonsensical as you may think. Selling 1 million copies over a year is great, sure, but it only generates an equal amount of profit over a much longer period of time, and that slows down further development. If Konami was able to sell 1 million copies of MGS4 within the first day or week, they'd immediately recoup the development costs for the game and re-structure their budget for other titles.

I think it IS unreasonable for a first day expectation, but I can't blame them for wanting to get into the black as soon as possible. If they don't recoup their development costs within the first few months, they'll make a cheap 360 port to recover the rest..
