GDC08: learn to say USK the German way!

Feb 21st 2008 1:33PM (Joystiq)
This is really interesting. Joystiq seems to be frequented by a number of Boris Schneider and Heinrich Lenhardt connaisseurs & fans, counting myself in and adding Winnie Forster, Michael Hengst, Martin Gaksch and Julian Eggebrecht to the mix :)
Some of you might be interested to know (if you are not already) that Heinrich is the head behind MMO online and print magazine http://www.buffed.de (with vids!). With Heinrich, Boris and Winnie all being located in Bavaria, we should talk them into a meetup at a bar or cafe somewhere (in Munich) ;)
Here are the links to their blogs (in German):

http://www.dreisechzig.net (dreisechzig = three-sixty, figures given Boris' job at MS)

GDC08: Mova's Steve Perlman talks Contour facial capture

Feb 21st 2008 10:06AM (Joystiq)
This is really interesting. Hope Mova manages to sign up some game development studios to use their technology. If they could get rid of the phosphorous make-up and make do with two cameras, their approach to facial feature detection could be used to for more interactive applications. Imagine your next-gen MMO/game character having your features :)
If you are interested in similar tech and maybe even Augmented Reality, I have listed a couple of links to more material in a blog post at http://codesurgeonblog.com/2008/02/feature-detection-with-phosphorous-make.html

GDC08: learn to say USK the German way!

Feb 21st 2008 6:03AM (Joystiq)
Boris is one of the handful of guys who single-handedly built the German game journalism market with "Happy Computer", "Power Play" and "PC Player" magazines. I think Boris was also involved in the translation of a number of LucasArts adventures to German. A really cool guy, not your standard PR dude.

Nyko introduces new PS3 controller charger

I think it looks great. For my taste the Nyko people could have made it look even more like a prop from Die Hard :)

PS3 Fanboy interview: Udon Comics and Street Fighter

Jul 20th 2007 4:51PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Now if UDON and Capcom make sure to provide enough animation drawings to each character and move, how could any geek growing up with Street Fighter II resist this game? I for sure could not :)

PS3 Fanboy interviews UDON about Super Street Fighter II HD Remix

Jul 20th 2007 4:42PM (Joystiq)
Gorgeous eye candy.

If you're really into 2D fighters you wouldn't settle for anything less than something along the lines of this http://www.x-arcade.com/tankstick-arcade-game.shtml or would you? Who cares about joypads :)

Great way to utilize the power of next gen consoles: Leave floating-point functionality untouched and go for 2D SF mayhem instead :)

And thanks to more RAM and harddisk storage, this'll mean that there won't be load times as with all the PS1, PS2 etc. versions that made you miss everything cartridge-based.

Joystiq impressions: Fable 2 'Combat Testbed'

Jul 16th 2007 12:17PM (Joystiq)
No matter how enthusiastic one might wish to be about the "true" Fable, the fighting mechanic with a single button does not seem bright at all.

How is it supposed to impress action-adventure players? Timed single button-presses with context-sensitive utilization of the environment will make players feel out-of-control. Does not sound satisfying at all.
