Downloadable games will 'ignite' PSP library, says Sony exec

Oct 20th 2008 10:06AM (Joystiq Playstation)
Not true, at least not if they don't require some kind of activation. The DLC of the PSP store doesn't require that, no active connection while playing or anything, and thus no cord can be snapped.

Unless Sony decides to release incompatible firmware at some point...

@kali4, you can't blame the platform for sucky programmers :P

@Jon Indeed, that's why I wrote "processor power" and not "processor clock speed" :) It would require some benchmarks though, which would make it arbitrary really...

I seem to be missing the "processor power" comparison, it's where the PSP really shines :)

PSP-3001 discovered on FCC website, reveals nothing new (so far)

Built-in GPS would be nice :) Although the GPS USB thingy is really tiny and easy to carry around, comes with a well-made little box for protection during travel too.

The camera ... well, that 1.3 Megapixel crap certainly isn't worth it, either a real camera (and then the PSP would get bulkier or more expensive) or nothing at all. And as for built-in mic, it's easy, so why not. But I haven't used my Skype headset, ever :p

Patapon 2 lives up to its namesake, contains twice as much content

Jul 23rd 2008 5:34AM (Joystiq Playstation)
I nearly finished the first one, started over once some weeks ago after finding the windmill level too hard to beat (and breezed through it the second time, strange). Patapon was, in fact, the game that made me buy a PSP, and it was as good as I hoped!

No Gravity officially hitting European PSN Store

Great :) I think the PSP store, particularly once it's available just through WiFi for the PSP itself as well, is a great chance for indy developers. Something Sony should build upon, if they're smart.

@Lars Eek, that's ugly :(

Lil followup...

@daniel-kun: Again, I'm not driving in Germany with it, but in Switzerland - it's possible that the Germany map data is different in quality from the Swiss material, but since they're both in the same map pack I doubt that.

@andwhyisit: I try not to call people names online, it's bad karma and all. Anyway, this isn't the first time that commenters on PSP Fanboy tell me that I don't have things that I do have, the last time was the Skype headset where I had it several weeks earlier than most other people too. I am sorry if my natural assumption that you're American is wrong. Let me guess: Texas?

@daniel-kun: There aren't any online traffic reports, the data is up to date as far as I can tell - it never sent me into dead ends or anything. It does know one-way traffic signs and no-driving signs, so it won't lead you through areas you aren't allowed to drive through - the only exception to that has been a partial no-driving sign that only applied to most but not all cars, and then it was only the last 200m where we had to look for a parking space anyway. And, there'll be map updates in the PS store I'm told.

The only downside really is that it takes anywhere from 1-5 minutes to find those pesky hiding GPS satellites after first starting up (it rarely loses them anymore afterwards unless you drive under a bridge or something, and then it finds the position again right after you get out). And of course, place input through just the PSP keys is a bit more cumbersome than a regular GPS' touchscreen.

Upsides include: Comfortable favourites collection, mode switchable to bicycle or even "on foot" (where it leads you through places a car wouldn't be allowed too), you can easily let it recalculate parts or the entire route, zoomable and turnable 3D map even with some 3D buildings in larger cities. The voice output is clear and understandable, available just like the UI in tons of languages (including English and German, of course), only at times a bit quiet since the internal PSP speaker isn't all that powerful.

The holder for the windscreen is sturdy and well-made. Unfortunately, the cigarette lighter charge cable doesn't work for me, not sure if it's a broken one or it's somehow incompatible with our car.

All in all, I'd really recommend the Go!Explore kit.

@andwhyisit: Your comment seems unnecessarily arrogant. For the future, I'd like you to believe that I have something when I tell you that I have it. Because I do have it, despite living in Sweden or Switzerland or whatever that tiny country with all cows and cheese is called, where everyobdy lives in alps and has long white beards. Do they have TVs there?
