HP's 11.6-inch Pavilion dm1 goes on sale

Jul 8th 2010 7:30PM (Engadget)
@pookguy88 Erm, but it has an HDMI port... so says HP's site anyway. And with the Mini 311 (same form factor) having one, I can't see why it wouldn't.

@bebopblues I imagine this will be 30-50% faster than the Mini 311, just due to the fact that it's using a CULV Athlon/Turion CPU instead of the Atom. I love my Mini 311, but it's no speed demon, sadly. (Maybe with a little OC action... eventually I'll get brave and try it.)

Poll: How much did you spend on your HDTV?

I bought a 46" Sony XBR8 last year for $3100 (the going price was still $4000 at the time). Still lovin' it.

Gaikai's Perry says OnLive pricing is a 'shot in the arm'

Mar 17th 2010 3:42PM (Joystiq)
If a person can't afford a decent PC for gaming, what makes you think they have the money to throw at a high-bandwidth, low-latency broadband connection for their home? Besides, at least for now, you'll need a PC meaty enough to play back 720p video smoothly in real time. Neither of these are inexpensive. Are you really further ahead to throw the necessary money in so you can then throw $15/mo at OnLive? Or would you be better off to just front the cash for a decent console?

Well, they are supposedly going to be releasing their "micro-console" device later in the year, which will allow you to play OnLive titles directly on your TV. However, I'll be surprised if that costs less than $100 at retail. That plus the $180 in fees for one year of service (and that being with *no* games at all, you still have to buy/rent games on top of that) will probably scare off most potential buy-in; at that point, you'd really be better off getting a PS3 or a 360.

OnLive to offer 'OnLive Game Portal' service without monthly fee

Mar 17th 2010 11:55AM (Joystiq)
You do realize that to actually play the game in the purported 720p quality smoothly, you'll probably need a machine in about that range anyway? No, the old PII-450 you have sitting in your closet from years ago isn't going to cut it. So really, you're not going to be gaining as much as you might think.

OnLive features 'cloud' session saves, disables graphics settings

@JamesH: Considering they're charging you a monthly fee, plus you have to buy/rent games separately, I wouldn't be surprised at all if this was the case. Maybe not right away, but after a couple months, as they start getting desperate for better ROI, I expect it'll happen. Don't think it'll save them, though.

User-generated content will be right out. I expect for multiple reasons, that this will not be setting a new high bar for visual quality.

Well, it's sounding like they'll actually have the service available - more than Phantom ever managed. However, I imagine utter failure will creep up and claim it within 6 months tops.

Ceton's quad CableCARD tuner for Media Center available for pre-order

Mar 13th 2010 11:47PM (Engadget HD)
@beaups: Well, they can't just have "SDV" support; it doesn't work that way. Each head-end SDV solution vendor uses a totally different protocol, so you have to run their software (necessitating tru2way, or a device (like the tuning adapter) which does and provides a standardized interface to the functionality.
