I agree with those that are frustrated and against the new game restrictions.
It was most definitely a feature and here is the quote from Jack Tretton himself in 2006: "You can send that content to four other friends for that initial investment," said Tretton. "We want to get the game in as many hands as possible."
"It's not about generating profits at each and every interaction with the consumer," he said. "I think that really offsets the argument that says, 'Wow, that's a really pricey system.'"
We have 5 PS3's in our household. You may think it stupid to have more than one of one type of console in a house, but that's your opinion. It doesn't negate the fact that when we purchased them over the past 5 years it included the FEATURE that when we bought one digital game download it was available in our entire house. We have one in each of three bedrooms, the living room and the family room.
For those of you saying if we want our games on a third, fourth, or whatever, just deactivate one and activate the other. Sony has said this is only possible every six months. This is so similar to when cable companies were charging for cable in each room and it was found in court to be unlawful.
It is interesting that at a time when cable and satellite companies are trying to make dvr's and service multiroom, Playstation has backtracked to a lesser feature. And to say that it's better than the competition is a broken argument. Say for five years you were getting a free drink with your hamburger at McDonalds and no one else offered it, than all of a sudden they said you could only have a cup 40% full. It doesn't matter if it's better than the competition, it's still not what you have been used to for five years and will have ramifications.
If they hadn't promoted the concept of adding your login to four other systems (friends or personal) it wouldn't be such a frustrating consumer action. It makes me not want to buy as much now that my purchase doesn't go as far.
And Sony has said games bought previously can still be used on multiple systems but new purchases can only be on two systems. Yet there has been no significant explanation of how this will work. If I want to buy something for our third PS3 that means I have to deactive one of the first two. But then I can't reactivate it again for six months, but what about all the games that were on there before? Will I be able to play them?
And there will be limitations for Playstation Plus. If I got free wallpaper or game downloads I could put them on all five consoles. It cheapens the yearly Plus benefits. Keep in mind, this is all for consoles under the same roof!
I don't approve of illegal game sharing, but Sony initiated the policy. They promoted the concept. They included the feature and now have made it sound like that wasn't what they intended. Not a positive move Sony. Frustrating.
I thought the show was very well shot, well written and full of depth of character; not moral character mind you, but character nonetheless.
I watch many many pilots. Most drama pilots end up looking like a movie, because the producers/directors/writers put so much effort into it in order to get it sold. My hope is that after the first season, or even throughout the first season, that it will retain at least some of the charm, decor and effort that went into this first episode. One example was the tomato juice with celery sticks in the conference room, was it tomato juice? bloody mary's? there for the jewish woman for some reason? Whatever it was, it was eye candy, and noone just puts tomato juice based drinks in a conference room for the heck of it, there was purpose behind it.
Sometimes, my wife and I just gaped with mouths open that women and jews were openly treated that way only 30 years ago (since it was based in the 60's, not necessarily 1960, it could've been 1967).
I encouraged by more and more cable outlets at least trying their hands at television. I just hope they have the resources and wherewithall to keep the show going the way it deserves to keep going. And of course, the whole beauty of the many cable networks is that this may be some kind of niche show, but hopefully the niche will be able to support it. I know that we'll keep watching.
