Novell and Microsoft cut out the GPL cancer from open-source Silverlight
Dec 24th 2009 7:58PM (Download Squad)Mono is now available under a *less restrictive* license. With GPL, it would be impossible to use Mono in a large number of projects because GPL is viral - it requires you to open-source any derivative projects. If your code uses Mono, pretty much, you're required to open-source that.
Mono is now available under a license that allows you to use it *whether or not your open-source your own code*. The LGPL requires you to open-source any modifications you make to Mono, but not the projects that *use* it.
How exactly is it a bad thing that you can now use Mono in your project, which you couldn't before, unless you wanted to be subject to some conditions that make it a no-go in a lot of cases.
It is not "being moved to a commercial license". It is now possible to use it in commercial products *as well* as in open-source products and non-commercial closed-source projects.
With this announcement, Mono has been moved from a license that says "I'm going to use copyright law to the full extent to prevent you from doing *anything* with it that I, the author, don't like" to one which says "do whatever you like with it. But if you modify the Mono code, make the changes available".
There's a lot of bad tech articles on the web, but this is the first time I've seen anyone "interpret" a bit of news by turning it *completely* upside down.
In other news, watch out, Santa is in town tonight, and I've heard he steals presents from all the kids who've been nice this year. Also cakes are slimming. And watch out for the gas usage of electric cars.
Apparently we're living in opposite-land today.
Internet Explorer market share falling like a ton of bricks
Feb 3rd 2009 2:32PM (Download Squad)lol, you're in for a disappointment.
I think what you meant to say is that IE8 will finally stop making a joke out of CSS. That doesn't mean CSS will be fully or correctly supported. Just that it'll be a lot less crippled than it were.
But of course, CSS is not the only relevant web standard. Last I heard, IE8 still didn't understand a peep of XHTML.
My biggest hope for IE8 is that it helps make people used to the idea that browsers can be swapped out. IE has its huge marketshare because most people don't consider it an app you can choose to use, but rather as a built-in part of the OS. Every time Microsoft tells users to download a new version of IE, they're reminded that "hey, this browser thing can be replaced. I wonder what else is out there".

Dec 21st 2008 5:01AM (Massively)Losing influence with SOE: EQ2 Flames admin "LFG" tells all
Mar 25th 2008 10:17AM (Massively)And it sure seems like a good way to ensure that the developers *never again* dare to consult with players on how to evolve the game.
Congratulations on teaching them once and for all just what a bad idea it is to trust your players. Or, for that matter, to attempt to *play* the game. If they dare play their game, some attention-whoring prick will reveal to the entire player-base that they're developers.
I suppose they'll have to develop the game without playing it from now on. Because having everyone know what chars they're playing isn't viable.
Guess you achieved the exact same thing you were whining about to begin with? Proud of yourself? I sure hope so.
Rumor: Age of Conan in bad shape
Feb 12th 2008 6:48AM (Massively)And yes, the Cheetah 2 update has been pushed into beta. And yes, the game still has some outstanding issues. Which is why it's been delayed to may.
I'm having fun playing it though.
