"Yes, cutting the review down because of visuals or music is harsh, but cutting it down because of the control mechanism is incredibly fair. Controls are a key element of gameplay, the most important aspect of a game. If the reviewer felt the control system got in the way, scoring the game over a 9 (if anything, the way he wrote the review, the game is STILL scored too high) is an impossibility. You need near flawless controls to keep the score treading above the 9 mark."
I don't necessarilly disagree with the GameSpot review, but really, if control were an issue, they should have elaborated on "LEARNING CURVE: ABOUT A HALF HOUR".
In this day and age, I'm suprised people are making such a big deal able a game for everybody having 'references to adult themes' such as sex or drugs when there are more and more games that use them outright.
If I didn't love the game so much, I would've been APPALLED that Tony Hawk's Underground only had a T-rating. The only thing that game didn't have was gore and nudity. But everything else... wow.
And don't forget the token game of every 'adult-themed' conversation, GTA. Prostitutes but no gigolos?
Are you kidding? Maybe the LodgeNet Nintendo controllers aren't as great as the real deal (:P), but they had some pretty decent games (not to mention mostly 1st-party SNES and N64 games). Through those networks I first played The Lost Vikings and Super Punch-Out!!, among others. Oh, and Wii VC is cheaper than those, at each game being $8.99 an hour average. :P
I don't know if this will come to fruition, it sounds cool though. VERY impractical.
If it were going to be a totally new game, the dominant part of the game's title would be totally different. Yoshi's Island was only subtitled Super Mario World 2, but really wasn't. The same applies for New Super Mario Bros. They're still games of the same name, so similar gameplay should be expected.
EGM confuses me. Sometimes they make cover stories for horrible or incomplete games (like Enter the Matrix, Rogue Squadron III, etc...). Sometimes they contain ads for games that they totally bomb in issues after the initial terrible review. Worst of all, 1up doesn't work half the time.
Oh well. I have NSMB and Super Princess Peach. To form a trifecta of mushroom righteousness I shall get this game.
Don't forget, Yoshi's Island didn't sell terribly well, being released at the end of the SNES' lifespan, so it's not like every Nintendo fan's played the first one.
Nintendo isn't making the Wii to be the media-lover's sweetheart. It's 'marketing goal/evil scheme' is to market videogames to people. The difference should be obvious, I hope.
"Whether or not Blu-ray is regarded as a great addition to gaming or a lame Trojan Horse has yet to be seen."
Um... let's see... they've got steep competition with HD-DVD. Yeah, it's not like Sony's really gonna be lax about pushing their own media formats if they think that despite the 'luxury' of PS3 a userbase of 50+million is guaranteed.
Gears of War IF it used HD-DVD would still have enough space at about 20GBs. Right now I think 25-50GB is overkill for many devs as gamers may come to expect them filled with content.
Based on my play experience with PS3, these are couple of the most accurate gameplay screens I've found, sans the HUDs. Notice how they aren't perfect quality like all of those close-ups on the face or those concept renders.
So what if they can sweat? IN NORMAL GAMEPLAY THE LOOK LIKE ACTION FIGURES.
I've already shared my disgust with Vlad on his 'editorial' in the other comment section but since he wants to 'proove fanboys wrong' by saying their screenshots are wrong in THIS one I might as well show some from 'clearly superior' hardware.
Each one has their own flaws when media/execs/devs aren't trying to hoodwink you. It isn't up to asshats to say that supporters of their respective systems (including fanboys) are wrong.
For once I'd love to see PICTURE SUPPORT when some graphic whore decides to pretend and talk like he's frickin' Van Gogh. I'm angry, you say?
Someone was asking for it. I would like to contend that if it was okay for Vlad to pick apart 'its graphic engine' to such an incredulous and inane detail than people should be able to pick apart his opinions [if they indeed are his honest opinions].
I would have mentioned the next point had someone not mentioned it already.
"Finally: You say it's not fair to compare the Wii to PS3 and X-Box 360, yet you compare Zelda to Oblivion? Are you contrary just for the sake of being contrary? Also, isn't Oblivion a 1st-person RPG (I haven't played it, so please correct me--NICELY--if I'm wrong)? Isn't Zelda a 3rd-person adventure? I doubt you'd be able to read tiny signposts with the camera zoomed out the way it is (to give you a better view of everything going on around you) anyway. Honestly, does sign-post reading really warrent Zelda "falling flat" or does someone else make the headlines and "falling flat" really isn't what you tink, Vlad?" -- ChrisBo
IT'S LIKE VLAD'S NEVER SEEN THE GAME.
Seriously, what's the point of this article? To say that "fanboys are wrong and stupid" with backwater drivel brought to the reader under the guise of "journalistic freedoms"?
I can learn to appreciate opinions from one man but you cling to the following:
"This isn't our official review of the title -- there's plenty positive to be said about Zelda, despite its unappealing visuals. Stay tuned for that post in the very near future. In fact, another Joystiq blogger is working on a rebuttal to this post right now."
Despite the last sentence, you've already insisted upon yourself.
Groupthink and Zelda

On a game that's supposed to last tens of hours.
Oh yeah, and Vlad sucks.
Nintendo to reconsider better graphics after high-def "takes off"
Nov 16th 2006 4:48PM (Joystiq)I read it as, how fun would the game be if the processor and visual responses couldn't keep up with the Wiimote functions?
Also, happy B-Day Shiggy. :)

TIME says Wii Sports may be "the greatest videogame" of all-time
Nov 14th 2006 5:59PM (Joystiq)TETRIS
PONG
SOLITAIRE
Pong was the first and had the greatest reach and impact while being put on every system.
Tetris and Solitaire were included with GB and Windows respectively, and their reach was just as remarkable.
If Wii is successful Wii Sports could have some degree of real influence among gamers.

Careful with those ancient Zelda screenshots! You'll poke an eye out with images that sharp. [update 1]

As if you're 'editorial' is worth debating.
