iPhone 4 review
Jun 23rd 2010 10:59AM (Engadget)Reading comprehension is fundamental.
I am asserting the fact that with iOS4, there is now a hardware/OS fragmentation. You now have hardware that cannot multitask. Again the is a core OS functionality fragmentation. Pretty simple guys.
I am further asserting that if you want to have apps support the pseudo multitasking API, you must rewrite the app. There are currently 200,000+ apps that are OLD API, we now have to wait for NEW API apps to be rewritten. Again, application fragmentation.

Jun 23rd 2010 10:48AM (Engadget)No, the apps have NOT been rewritten. There are a huge number of apps that do not support the API. We are waiting for apps to be redone.
Just because you say "no one expects to multitask". does not make it true. It certainly does not change the fact that there is now hardware/OS core functionality fragmentation.

Jun 23rd 2010 9:01AM (Engadget)Fragmentation:
1) There is now application fragmentation on the app store. All applications have to be rewritten to support the pseudo multitasking API. You now have "old" API apps and "new" API apps.
2) There is now hardware/OS fragmentation. This new OS version now leaves core OS functionality (multitasking) out for certain hardware. That's actually a huge fragmentation.
These are points that should be reported. The fact that people are waiting for apps to be rewritten should make this fragmentation self evident for you.

Jun 23rd 2010 8:41AM (Engadget)The review should be more critical in regards to the fake multitasking as well. Not to mention the need to rewrite applications to support the pseudo multitasking, and the resulting fragmentation.
I think benchmarks should be included as well.

Jun 22nd 2010 6:54PM (Engadget)It is sad. They need to do a real review instead of this infomercial.

iOS 4 apps: the best of what's new and updated (live updates!)
Jun 21st 2010 10:55PM (Engadget)Of course the fragmentation is different from Android, it is much much worse. That was my point.
Apple has phones that now lack CORE OS functionality. Further, all applications have to be rewritten to supported the pseudo multitasking API. It's a complete mess, and I know that media outlets are just going to ignore it.
The only 3 year old phone running Android is actually an iPhone.. haha. A port of Android to iphone... and yes, it does real multitasking. FYI, Android was released at the end of 2008.
I am not surprised you glossed over the facts, as I expect most media to do so.
iOS 4 apps: the best of what's new and updated (live updates!)
Jun 21st 2010 3:05PM (Engadget)Immaterial. It is still hardware and software fragmentation. The new OS requires apps to be rewritten. Hardware lacks core functionality across devices. It is a worse fragmentation than ever seen, but I expect Engadget to completely ignore that fact.
