They developers aren't exactly working for free, out of the goodness of their hearts. They're working for cold, hard cash.

Yes, paying for something entitles you to use it as you see fit. That includes reselling it. Yes, the games provided hours of entertainment. That's why we buy them. It's not like entertainment is an unintended, free side effect of the games.

I still don't see where "grateful" factors into it. They provided a good, and they were compensated for it. What happens to the good after that is none of their business.

Precisely. He's not a "friend," he's a consumer. The idea that, because we like video games, we shouldn't act like other consumers is ridiculous.

Have you ever used a library? If so, the publishing industry could ill use "friends" like you. Have you thought about the authors?

@cxm: There's another reason why gaming companies haven't "banded together to strong arm Gamestop." It's called collusion, and it's illegal.

And seriously, calling out Gamestop because they make a profit is lame. Every business needs to make a profit, or else they'd wouldn't be viable. Profit margins on new games are pretty thin; if it weren't for used games, we likely wouldn't have any specialty retailers at all.

I honestly can't believe this is being debated.
It amazes me that some people think reselling games is immoral in some way. It's not. And your loyalty to these companies is certainly not reciprocated: they'd sell you guys down the river if they could turn a profit from it.
Not to say that these companies are in any way bad, but let's not delude ourselves into thinking that these are great and noble people who are grievously injured by used game sales.
