Microsoft pulls apart a Kinect camera, tickles your non-gaming fetish
Aug 7th 2010 3:54PM (Engadget)How about I surprise you instead? The Kin died 5 weeks ago. Microsoft has abandoned the project.
The Kinect on the other hand, has some real promise. Voice and facial recognition is pretty cool. Anytime technology can become more aware of its environment and react to that input in a useful way, good things happen. Its way cooler to say "hello xbox" to sign in, then to find a controller, scroll through the menus, find my gamertag, and sign in manually.
DJ Tiesto joins the cast of DJ Hero 2
Jul 30th 2010 6:03PM (Joystiq)I've seen quite a few live performances from the top DJs this year (Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, BT, many more ...) and Tiesto easily put on the best show of all. He goes all out when he performs, and plays very long sets. Not only was the music incredible, but he created the most powerful, positive energy in the crowd, that surpassed any live music performance I have ever seen.
Say what you want about his music, but he has been dropping trance anthems almost yearly for the past 13 years. There are lot of amazing DJs out there who are very underrated and deserve more popularity, but I wouldnt say Tiesto is overrated. I think he absolutely deserves his renown.
I will definitely be picking up DJ Hero 2 now.
HP's Rahul Sood says Microsoft killed Xbox vs PC online gaming due to keyboard-mouse superiority
Jul 25th 2010 8:43PM (Engadget)"How can you seriously say that a controller is superior to a keyboard and mouse?"
Would you not agree that for most other genres (platforming, racing, sports, etc) controllers work better? Please enlighten me if you think I am way off on this one. I never said controllers were superior for FPS, and they certainly are far worse for RTS.
Obviously lots of proud PC gamers here, and that's great. I hope I didn't hurt anyone's feelings. I am just trying to offer another perspective to the discussion, but thanks anyways for the down votes!

Jul 25th 2010 8:11PM (Engadget)I grew up on PC games, and I still play games like TF2 on PC, using a logitech G9 gaming mouse. You are right about the 360 spins with a mouse. Its faster. But when you increase the linear distance of the joystick, and increase the sensitivity, the controller is not too far off. Advantage Mouse.
But movement is also key, especially in up-close firefights. On a controller, you not only get 360 degrees of movement, (vs 8 degrees on a keyboard), but you can also completely control the speed of movement, where as keyboard movement speed is binary. So if I am moving and sniping, or strafing and shooting up close, its vital that i have complete control of not only aim, but also movement speed and direction, because that also has a direct effect on how steady i can track my target when we are both moving and shooting.
On the other hand, if you are standing still, the mouse wins. But if you are a skilled FPS player, it is important to always keep moving, so freedom and accuracy of movement becomes an integral part of your ability to aim and traverse the environment simultaneously.

Jul 25th 2010 7:47PM (Engadget)No. For RTS, K+M wins, hands down. I doubt controllers will ever come close.
For FPS, the mouse can offer slightly better target tracking with practice, but fails in freedom of movement, because you are restricted to up, down, left, and right keys, while on a dual stick controller, you have full 360 degree freedom of aim and movement. Once you throw a KontrolFreek onto the aim joystick, you have plenty of linear distance from stop to stop to get all the accuracy you need to compete with K+M gamers. Shadowrun was a great game. Played tons of it on xbox and PC, and never felt that balance was an issue.
Aside from FPS and RTS, controllers perform as good or better every other genre that I can think of.
Pachter: Online multiplayer games to blame for game sales decline
Jul 19th 2010 9:23PM (Joystiq)You want me to buy more games? You want to kill off the used market? Then do away with this bullsh*t standard of releasing all games at $60, as if they are all equal. Its horribly unhealthy for the industry because it makes core gamers very selective of their purchases, and it prohibits industry growth, because casual gamers don't want to invest that much money into a game when gaming is only mildly important to them.
If you only put 9 months of work into your game and its short and unpolished and reuses 90% of its assets from its predecessor as in Crackdown 2, then price it appropriately. Dont release it at $60 and complain about sales declining.
Your game doesnt NEED multiplayer to sell copies. It doesnt NEED to be 30 hours long. It just needs to priced appropriately for what it is.

2)RDR
3)Conviction
As a huge splinter cell fan from the beginning, I was really dissapointed with Conviction. Its a decent action game, but its just not splinter cell. Play Wake first.
