Bury the Shovelware: Space Invaders Revolution vs Space Invaders Extreme

Oct 16th 2008 2:32PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
To the people complaining they never get power-ups, they have no idea how deep Space Invaders Extreme is, and how similar the gameplay is to a puzzle game. If you pay attention to the meter on the right of the screen, you might notice a pattern whenever you get a Fever Round, A UFO transformation, an All Colors Transformation, or a Roulette UFO / Extra Life UFO.

In fact, there's even a pattern to which specific Fever Round you'll get. Knowing what to shoot and when is key to the game. You can even score extra lives if you pay attention to lighting up all the text boxes in the background.

DS Daily: Bummed about the GBA

Oct 8th 2008 2:09AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I'm not, I'm either going to keep my DS Lite and not upgrade to the DSi because there are no essential updates, or I'm going to get a GBASP, at least then I won't have to worry about that bulge in my DS that makes it less pocket friendly.

Either way, no GBA, no deal. I need at least some method of playing my old school games.

Nintendo announces Nintendo DSi

This is gonna be trouble if there's any games that will take advantage of new features. It'll mean new DSi games won't work on the regular DS.

And seriously, I just bought a new DS Lite. I'll keep my GBA slot and forget the camera, thank you.

Fanswag: Win a signed copy of Soul Bubbles

Though it's actually developed by Crystal Dynamics. Mmmm, Soul Reaver. Why can't more video games hire that kind of incredible vocal talent?

Second is once again developed by Ion Storm, but mmm, Deus Ex. Why can't more video games give you the ability to run like a cheetah with bullet proof skin while you're invisible?

Gaming to Go: The World Ends with You

I should clarify that when I say all the missions are the same, I mean it pretty much comes down to killing Noise. Either for money or a quota, each mission is an excuse to grind.

It's annoying to be held back when I really just want to keep going, especially considering the battles are very little challenge once you get used to the top screen, in which case you're just sitting around being bored.

The few missions that involve people are very short and very simple.

Gaming to Go: The World Ends with You

As interesting as the battle system is, it's rather devoid of strategy and after a while it gets pretty boring. There's no real point to the two screen combat other than to distract you from the fact that you otherwise wouldn't be thinking during the fight.

Furthermore the fashion system is annoying as hell, especially when missions start requiring you to grind up money just to buy clothes that are "in fashion", and almost all of the missions are the same thing.

I really was annoyed by the story too, it goes nowhere fast, and characters seem to either change or appear with no gradual motive at all for it. There were only a few times in the story that I was genuinely intrigued and wanted to find out more, and then I ended up finding out almost nothing by the end of the game.

The only things I'll really praise TWEWY for are the fact that you have total control over the difficulty level and that it tries a lot of things, even though most of them are not practical or well thought out, like mind reading, the fashion, or even the controls, which aren't very responsive at all.

I'm sorry to everyone that loved this game, but I can only appreciate new things so much before I realize I'm not having any fun and I'm only playing because I paid 40 bucks for this thing and I'm hoping it'll get better.

DS Daily: Well, well, look at that

Rythym Tengoku Gold and Retro Game Challenge didn't have my interest until E3, and now I'm definitely getting both.

DS Fanswag: Space Invaders Extreme, Arkanoid, and a paddle to play 'em with

What I'm hoping for? Since Kirby Superstar and Chrono Trigger are getting SNES remakes, I'm hoping for a Super Metroid DS remake as well. Even though it's almost surely not going to happen.

DS Fanboy Review: The World Ends With You

May 2nd 2008 8:02PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I really wanted to like this game too, but no, it never gripped me. The story moves along very slowly, and the character dialogue is incredibly pretentious. Characters go on and on for minutes at a time, just throwing all of the game's messages at you in such a shallow manner that it just got ANNOYING.

Just, whatever. Stop dragging on this damn story for 3 ****ing game cycles and let it just END. I'm interested in things like the game and the reapers and how they came to be, NOT some "I don't need anybody" snotty kid and his emotional issues that seem to have no actual SOURCE.

It's official. Zipper-man uses interesting settings to make up for his lack of interesting characters. I've already talked to several people about this and convinced them of it.

DS Fanboy Review: Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword

Apr 25th 2008 2:25PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
You're gonna tell me Devil May Cry is easy, when I'm calling Dragon Sword easier? Sir, do you understand that such a thing hurts your defense of the game, not help it? You're officially wandering into fan-boy territory, blindly defending this game without being able to acknowledge it has faults.

You have to be able to realize that games have their flaws, and that spotting them is the first step to improving future games. I've already said I think this series has a lot of the potential on the DS. Why don't you just acknowledge that what I've mentioned would lead to improvements and hope for a better game?
