G4TV's blog strikes back at the Game Rag [update 1]

Jul 26th 2006 12:43PM (Joystiq)
Why did psychonauts only sell like 12 copies? Why are there so many reality TV series? If Tech-TV was so great why did they gut it and sell it off for parts?

Do you guys really think you make up G4tv's REAL target audience? Do you think they really care about that article or his opinions? Do you have any clue at all why every week there's a new Britney Spears or Pop-punk band? The people in charge at G4 don't give a crap about the couple thousand hard-core gamers holding their breath right now waiting to play Okami. They want the attention of MILLIONS of people who buy crappy music, watch horrible movies, like dumb girls with big tities, pre-order the new Madden every year and have gobs and gobs of disposable income and very little idea of what to do with it. You should learn that money > integrity, quality != profits and you != the Center of the Universe.

The Darkness Lead Designer favors Blu-ray

Fan,

Speedtree mostly saves time.

Textures take up WAY more room than shapes information. A huge building with only a couple of low-rez textures could fit on a 3.5 diskette.

You'd be amazed at what can be done procedurally, check out http://produkkt.abraxas-medien.de/kkrieger.

Unreal Engine 3 MIA on Revolution?

Mar 29th 2006 1:22PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
The Xbox 360 (and I'm guessing, the PS3) offer 4:3 480i/480p support as well as HD. So even if HD is nice (which is really is), and the optimal situation, I see no reason for it to be difficult to LOWER the output resolution of a game engine. PC games offer an almost unlimited number of resolutions they will run in. That little bitch from Epic's been whining about the revolution since it's been announced and just can't miss an opportunity to bad-mouth a system that doesn't even exist yet because it down-plays the very thing his company profits from... graphics.

Single player review - Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (Xbox 360)

Mar 20th 2006 1:17PM (Joystiq)
Sombody got up on the wrong side of their 360 I think. This game is far ahead of Ghost Recon and Ghost Recon 2 (and pretty much every other tactical shooter) in both graphics AND gameplay.
GRAW is a great single player experience pretty much from start to finish. The enemy AI can be suprisingly good. Your team AI, while not great, RARELY gets in the way if you take even a modest amount of control over them. The story is good (for a Tom Clancy game). The review mentions the sound of bullets hiting the wall beside you but he doesn't mention being able to see the bullets "wizzing" by your head or the bits of brick that tear off and fly past the camera when taking cover (it looks amazing and does wonders for creating a feeling of apprehension). I never once experienced pop-in and the very few collision glitches I encountered were not distracting nor did they take away from the gameplay. The helicopter chaingun missions were fun and not as gimmicky as I thought they'd be. The explosions in the game are loud and beautiful and almost worth the price of admission alone (at times I found myself unloading into just about every parked car I saw, just to see it explode). Your weapons, while realistic, still feel weighty, and like they pack some punch. The control scheme has been refined and is much smoother than previous games and the ability to stick to walls and peek out from cover works fantastically (I wonder if the reviewer remembered you can use the "y" button to leave cover instantly, avoiding the half-second delay). The night/thermal vision is a little rough on the darker levels but I can appreciate it to some degree because it forces you to turn it off and actually make your way through the dark at times. There are too many levels in other games where you flip on the "Green View" at the start of the level and never touch it again. The cross-com, while not incredibly useful, does not distract or get in the way and can be fun. It also adds alot to the "future warrior" aspect of the game and was a worthwhile inclusion.
I'd give the single player campaign alone a 8.5/10. While the difficulty can be uneven (such is war) and the game is a little short, I really enjoyed playing through GRAW (right now I'm having a blast playing through again on "hard" difficulty).
