Joystiq and PSPFB hands on with PSP-2000: Part 1

Can it do H.264 video?

Whither Mac gaming?

Nov 28th 2006 10:01AM (TUAW.com)
I haven't used a PC for a year or two now and the single thing I miss the most is the FPS. I had a $800 computer with a tricked out video card and I could play Battlefield and UT2004 to my heart's content. It's impossible to do on a Mac.

Unreal Tournament 2007 is coming and if your a real fan, you really have no business on a Mac. You need Windows XP and at the least you need a Mac Pro. It's a convincing reason to buy a Xbox but who wants to use a controler? I despartely want to use a mouse, keyboard and my Mac hardware with the latest FPS. Why have you forsaken us Apple?

Do you watch video on your iPod?

Nov 22nd 2006 10:14AM (TUAW.com)
I watch a 20 minute tv episode almost everyday on the Boston T. It's convenient, I walk into work and change it to music and start working. It's a feature I've gladly paid for and its useful for getting a lot more out of a small device. I also got some tv shows from the iTS and hooked them up to my tv via iPod and they look as good as cable. The old shows in 320 look like crap but the new 640x480 shows look as crisp as cable on the non flat pannel Wega.

The big problem with using the iPod Video is getting good content. Beside the iTS, it's a huge pain to compress, crop, rip videos (iSquint/Handbrake or any such equivalent).

Keynote gets some love

Nov 10th 2006 1:55PM (TUAW.com)
Keynote is tremendous. It's ridiculously better than Powerpoint but I would not call it Apple's best app. There are problems but with Apple releasing a new Keynote every year, I'm very excited that the updates are right around the corner.

Big Problems:
• The Inspector pannel, Font pannel, Color pannel, all the pannels could really be better integrated. Changing a color of a font or object should be a lot easier.

• Layers, Powerpoint doesn't have it yet but Keynote really needs Photoshop style layer menus so animating complex slides could be a lot easier.

• Animation is not as robust as Powerpoint, you can't define a path for an object to travel.

• More shadow and filter effects would be nice. The reflection is a nice touch but it'd be useful to have more.

• Master/Slave slide concept could be executed in a better way, its difficult to use and it's hard to make a complete template w/o being a very experienced pro.

The reasons why I use Keynote almost everyday:
• Vector objects and the ability to copy paste styles, it just makes things so much faster and easier. Especially since its an easy keyboard shortcut

• The type is always anti-aliased and its alwas tremendous.

• Animations are about as good as anything out there.

• It handles embeded videos very well (but could be better). You can hand off a Keynote file and it has all the video files. This is almost impossible in OSX Powerpoint due to bugs.

Ultimately, all of these criticisms are also valid for Pages (which is fantastic too). A real tip for Keynote users, buy a widescreen monitor.

iTunes AppleScript to batch edit video metadata

Nov 6th 2006 4:10PM (TUAW.com)
holy god this is good!

i've had the same problem, itunes 7 handles tag editing of video files in a pisspoor manor. this should hopefully make apple more eager to edit the videos. REALLY, why is itunes 7 so bad at editing the tags?

do you know how bad my hands hurt from tagging 2 seasons worth of Lost in iTunes???

iPod nano (PRODUCT) RED Special Edition officially official

Oct 13th 2006 10:26AM (TUAW.com)
Beside just mentioning 'the global fund' why not add some few words about how all the RED products are designed to help AIDS treatments in Africa? Its an important cause, it'd be nice to see TUAW do more than think its just a red iPod.

Nike.com redone with Adobe Flash

Oct 2nd 2006 2:22PM (Download Squad)
Go to the new Nike store, select an item and try purchasing. At step 3 'Billing Information' you get an indication to type in your credit card number but at no point on the webpage does it tell you that your credit card number is secure. Only a lowly VeriSign logo exists which doesn't tell you very much even when you click on it. The url is a HTTP, there is no secure lock in the browser corner. Safari's activity menu shows that the page actually 7 links to https://secure-niketown.nike.com but you'd never know it by looking at the webpage.

Basically, Nike missed a small detail for their new website and it basiclly does not tell you where your credit information is going. Pretty stupid on Nike's part...

Four new Pearl themes here, from frilly to edgy

Why does the pink one have a 'KT' icon? Is that Korea Telecom? If so, whats it got to do with Blackberry?

Apple issues one-liner support doc on random MacBook shutdown problem

Sep 7th 2006 10:04AM (TUAW.com)
My boss just mentioned yesterday that he was having these problems and started putting his MacBook on an iCurve, an elevated platform for cooling & comfort, and today he said he hasen't been having any problems at all. I suspect it is the cooling. Elevating it is supposed to help.

EXCLUSIVE: here's why I think Pearl news was allowed to leak

Aug 30th 2006 11:35AM (BBHub)
I agree with #2. The executive office isn't seated for short term gains; your analysis is shoddy in suggesting that paper-wealth is the driving factor for the leaks.

What maybe more true is BoyGenius being the lead in creating an enormous gain in the stock price out of leaks. If he wants to credit the whole gain, he just may deserve it.
