Wii Music accommodates our de facto banjo theme

Sep 26th 2008 8:22PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
That doesn't sound like a banjo, it sounds like a western tuned shamisen. And look, it doesn't matter what Shiggy says, waving a Wii remote to a rhythm doesn't teach you how to play guitar, just like playing Guitar Hero doesn't teach you how to play guitar. I still don't get why there haven't been game developers that will make an instructional game for actually learning how to play guitar, or the drums, or a saxophone, or whatever. Sure, Guitar Hero may be great while you're in middle school, but how will that increase your chances with the ladies in high school? Learn how to play guitar, get into a band. Cripes, these people talk as if they're bridging some sort of gap, but they're not. I look at Wii Music and Rock Band as ways avoiding real instruments rather than inspiring people to learn.

Ask Engadget: Which gaming mouse is superior?

May 22nd 2008 9:17PM (Engadget)
Even mice with 1000-2000 dpi are mostly useless if you can't crank up the USB polling rate. Anyone trying to improve their game must steadily and accurately pitch up the sensitivity, you can't just set it at max and hope to have a good time. Beyond that, new low friction mouse skates. That's it. I have a Razer and I don't use the four side buttons nor do I use the scroll wheel during games. More buttons doesn't necessarily mean more power unless you can really train yourself to use them. Mouse skates and sensitivity training are all that's required, at that point you can use any mouse you want. I know that's not a nerdy or gadgety answer but it's a real answer.

Rumor: Nintendo still hurt about RE4, reason why Capcom doesn't have a Brawler

Feb 4th 2008 7:39PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Are you kidding? Nobody mentioned probably the *best* Capcom action character made in recent years: Viewtiful Joe! VJ would have been hands down perfect for Super Smash Bros.

Virtually Overlooked Week: Eric's picks

I personally don't understand why everyone thinks the Saturn version of Bomberman was the best one. The Dreamcast version was 8-player online with wide maps.

Wii Are Tumiki Fighters?

Apr 16th 2007 2:22PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Excellent game, but a disc version I think would be a tough sell unless it came with other games by the same guy. Some of his latest games are even better. I say either put the one game on VC or pack in some more games

Wii releases for the week of April 16th

Apr 16th 2007 2:19PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Oh yeah! I'm definitely getting Bust-A-Move Bash! That's seriously my favorite action puzzle series of all time. I played the crap out of the Dreamcast version, but this time with 8 players it's going to be absolute madness. Bust-A-Move is also one of those series where I've had the most success getting my non-gamer friends to play because it's just aim and fire, and with chain reactions anyone can come back from behind. This is a definite must-have Wii game, good times guaranteed.

Soul Calibur survey ignites fiery rays of hope

Apr 13th 2007 8:02PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I am an experienced Soul Calibur player and the amount of moves and combos that are possible in the 3 (+1 if you count Soul Edge) iterations so far is pretty incredible. My worry about Soul Calibur on Wii is that people might expect a direct 1-to-1 control of the Wii remote to the character's sword, and I honestly believe that this isn't likely. What is more likely is that swinging the remote vertically will correspond to the tradtional vertical attack button, and swinging horizontally will correspond to the horizontal attack button. At that point, when you've got just a general motion corresponding to a button press, why bother? Also, there are differences between long and short button presses, differences between pressing two buttons at the same time and rolling from one to the other, etc. You would have to make a far simpler sword fighting game that was more realistic (ie a fencing simulation) with no combos or special moves and only if you could get the Wii to accurately determine the orientation of the remote.

Let's say Soul Calibur for Wii only used buttons and no motion sensing. How would you do the button setup at that point? A=horizontal, B=vertical, Z=guard, C=kick? I don't really know if that would feel right, sounds like a job for an arcade stick to me.

In any case, Namco would need to do some *serious* work to get the game playable and truly fun with the remote/nunchuck combo.
