Jun 12th 2010 11:06AM (Engadget)Unlike Apple, Palm and RIM, Google released a mobile OS - it is open sourced, so anyone can choose to put it on their phone.
Motorola's Droid was a very popular phone.
HTC's Incredible is what's in this thread - in the US it's a Verizon phone.
HTC's EVO is mentioned frequently - it's a Sprint phone (in the US).
Google made the Nexus One - an Android phone. That's the only one Google has released.
There will be literally HUNDREDS of Android phone choices - based on what price and feature set you want. It's more like the PC market - you can buy a Windows 7 box from HP, Dell, etc...
As for Android OS updates - Google has had a handful, and they have been naming them after desserts.
Android started in Feb 2009 with 1.1.
April 2009 brought 1.5 "Cupcake".
Sep 2009 1.6 "Donut".
October 2009/Jan 2010 was 2.0/2.1 "Eclair".
May 2010 2.2 "Froyo".
Like Apple's products, older phones won't necessarily be able to run the new OS updates (you can't put iOS4 on an original iPhone) - but with Android's open-source approach, there will simply be a longer list of phones - some of which will be able to take more upgrades than others based on their hardware capabilities.

Jun 12th 2010 10:52AM (Engadget)Having come to AT&T from US Cellular and never dropped a call in the 7 years I was with them (although it was a dumbphone), and now having a few months on Verizon with no drops, I think it's likely as much the hardware as it was the network. Other AT&T users (friends) I have on Blackberry did not experience the drops that I did...
I don't see pointing the finger at AT&T as a valid excuse, since Apple is carefully controlling which network gets their hardware, and no single network would be in this situation if they had taken a different approach. They wanted the cash from exclusivity, now they should share in the blame for the issues caused by such an approach, which is not necessary in order to introduce hardware or software to the mobile phone market.

Jun 12th 2010 10:40AM (Engadget)As far as app folders go, unless I misunderstand what you mean by that, the phone already has it, courtesy of Android OS. Just touch a spot on the screen where you want a folder and hold down. When the menu pops up, you can choose Widget, Program or Folder. Choose folder. Then you can open the folder and add shortcuts to apps inside it. You can even rename the folders. I have several on mine. Love them.

Jun 12th 2010 10:28AM (Engadget)It took a while to get the Default Program settings changed over to HandCent - but once that was finished, it works 100% as expected.
Check it out - and I hope you like it!
