Nintendo to Greenpeace: We do care about the environment

Jan 13th 2010 3:54AM (Joystiq)
@ LaughingTarget: The truly laughable thing here is your argument. You paint anthropogenic global warming out as pseudoscience, saying that scientists who endorse it are "giving real scientists a bad name", and yet your entire tirade, though detailed, is completely devoid of sources. Curious, given the fringe position you take and flaunt as "real" science. Are we to simply trust that your understanding of climatology is more thorough than both the typical layperson and the certified climatologist? Welcome to the information age. If you don't cite sources, fringe "facts" and "statistics" have absolutely no credibility. You may as well have typed your response in a punctuation-less caps-locked blob, but maybe you just like being sneaky.

By the way, meteorology =\= climatology:

Listen up everyone, this is just like any other scientific topic. If you're not a scientist with expertise in that particular field, you're a layperson. If you're a layperson, you must decide: Do I trust the experts in this field? If so, the consensus of the scientists in that field is your only guide. You need not follow it 100% dogmatically, skepticism is healthy. However, unless you're willing to become an expert yourself, you have no reasonable alternative.

If 95 astrophysicists tell you an asteroid is going to destroy the city you live in tomorrow, and 5 say it won't happen, what do you do? The consensus amongst climate experts is just as clear.

"It seems that the debate on the authenticity of global warming and the role played by human activity is largely nonexistent among those who understand the nuances and scientific basis of long-term climate processes."

Nintendo to Greenpeace: We do care about the environment

And I hate pompous morons who make idiotic, fallacious generalizations off-hand, such as taking a single environmental topic and implying that all environmentalists have the same opinion on that issue. Further, I hate when laypeople proclaim to know more than the scientists themselves. Your sneering certainty that global warming is nonsense reeks of ignorance. Even if global warming, man-made or not, were a complete fiction there are plenty of other reasons to be concerned about the environment. Ever heard of peak oil? How about the global water crisis? Since you like to keep things simple, here's how it works: We live on a planet with finite resources. Consume them too quickly and we're in big trouble. And that's only a whiff of the shit that's heading our way.

Educate yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_environmental_issues

Also, your analogy is complete trash, but I don't have time to address it right now.
