A viridium patch is a small device which could be attached to clothing. The patch emits a signal which could be detected up to two sectors away.
In 2293, after the attack on the IKS Kronos One, Captain James T. Kirk prepared to beam over, attempting to salvage the peace process that was being prepared between the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets. Before doing so, Captain Spock attached the patch to the back of Kirk's uniform. After Kirk, along with Doctor Leonard McCoy, had been arrested, Spock and the crew of the USS Enterprise-A were able to rescue their friends from the Rura Penthe colony and save the peace process. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country).
