@Tyler: Mine runs fairly well, I set up a Linux swap to avoid the load screens and don't use that many widgets. I agree though, I prefer Cyanogens efforts over it.
I have run JACxHero too, It runs smooth with a bit of messing around, apart from the lack of bluetooth and the annoying rotate issue. It's definitely usable.
I've been messing around with a hero build on my G1 for a couple of weeks now and I must say, overall, I'm fairly impressed with how smooth it has been running. Obviously there have been a few slow downs, but it runs mostly at the same speed, if just a little bit more sluggish than your video.
Flash is sluggish, so much so that I had to turn it off. At the moment the flash on the G1 (and by the looks of it the Hero) is just there to show a few adverts, anything beyond that just makes the whole device lag. Hopefully this will change with the release of Flash 10 in (apparently) October
I've got to say though, if you're tech savvy, I wouldn't rule out the G1. Despite a few nominal problems with speed and hardware (namely, Bluetooth and the LED lights, which are both being worked on) it's a nice experience, plus, I like my QWERTY keyboard.
