Study: Positive correlation between piracy and game review scores

Aug 6th 2011 1:22PM (Joystiq)
This is actually a very poor correlation. The statement says "Metacritic Scores explain 10% of the variance in the unique peers per game on BitTorrent." This 10% is actually what is known as a coefficient of determination, or R-squared value. The R-squared value tells you the percent of variability in the dependent variable (Unique peers per game on BitTorrent) explained by the independent variable (Metacritic Scores). It is obtained by doing a simple regression of the data values for both sets. An R-squared value of 10% or .10 is very low, even for a social science study such as this. I am an Economist and we are use to seeing relatively low R-Squared values because it is a social science experiements involving humans and their "rational choices". FYI, people don't always make rational choices but it is an assumption we must make. This is in constrast to other sciences that have very high R-Squared values due to the level of control they may have in their experiment, e.g. monitoring for the effect of a new drug. Long story short, I don't see this figure as being statistically significant.

THQ stock drops 25 percent in one day on Homefront launch

Mar 16th 2011 9:36AM (Joystiq)
Actually,I think this is a bit of a stretch. While the drop in THQ's stock may in part be result of the poor reviews for Homefront, a more likely explanation is the ensuing crising and fears of nuclear radiation in Japan. Also, the turmoil in the Middle East has some blame. Both of these occurances are responsible for the 133 point drop in the Dow Jones Industrial Average yesterday. Many stocks took a hit yesterday.

Yeah, I associate muffin tops with fat traufs, commonly referred to here as a walligator or in other parts, a sea donkey.

Mandatory Xbox 360 update sneakily halts Call of Duty pirates

Jan 20th 2011 3:55PM (Joystiq)
Halo: Reach also received a similiar patch. Now, on to other matters. I see a lot of you complaining and assuming that people are simply pirating games. I can tell you this is not true, at least not in my case. I purchase my games as do the rest of you, however I do have a modded Xbox 360. I rip my backups and then reburn them to play on that console. I have about 35 games and at $59.99 retail thats quite the investment. I am sure most of you are going to be like yeah right this guy is full of sh*t, but that's the truth. The problem with what Microsoft is doing is that they are flagging the consoles that have run games which failed authentication. You put the game in, it shows the game on the dashboard but when you press Play Game...boom...black screen. Microsoft can flag that game for a permanent Xbox Live ban. Although there is no law stating that modified systems are illegal. So now I have questions. How do you determine what is legal and what is not? What violates or determines a violation of Microsoft's EULA? Can anyone answer this?

12 Days of Joyswag: A Fallout: New Vegas neon sign (yeah, f'real)

Well lets see...because using Love and Hate to bludgen a Fiend in the Mojave wasteland is just too delightful. Because of this I feel I should wave my support for the game just as I do my beer mirrors :)

PSJailbreak is real, is sold out, and is likely to get your console banned for using it

Not much of a surprise here...but the scene always presses forward, and people will find away to keep access to the PSN and this software.
